The saddest part for me is how Charmander actually tried to change, and he did change. It was difficult for him, but he managed because he cared that much for his friends. He showed so much empathy and care in this episode, and that's what got him killed in the end.

The saddest part about charmander dying is that he did change, he offered to spare everyone if they gave him back squirtle. He even tried to say “all I wanted was to” and he was probably gonna say “save you”or something like that but squirtle just didn’t want to listen and thought that he was killing them only to evolve. In episode 10, we see that caterpie was defeated and left with nearly nothing, when she killed charmander, she became no better than him

Caterpie: ‘The difference between you and me is that you don’t feel empathy, you just use it. You wouldn’t feel a thing if I killed Squirtle.’ Also Caterpie: Uses Whiskers as a weapon against Charmander, uses empathy to make her feel like she’s a part of a family when really she’s just a soldier, isn’t phased when Charmander threatens to kill her, likely wouldn’t feel a thing if he did. Damn, that’s good writing. Caterpie becomes the very thing that they hated. The character development is the reverse of Charmander’s; going from the motivation being about caring about another (Pablo) to just wanting power, vs just wanting power to fighting for the sake of another (Squirtle). At this point, Caterpie basically seems to not care about Pablo anymore, and just wants power.

Coming here from E10 and the ending was heartbreaking. Charmander coming to his senses, going on a whole rescue mission, endured so many different opponents, all to save the one friend who he knew had his good intentions in mind. Squirtle loved Charmander and Charmande loved him back. It was a conflict of ideals but both had good intentions in mind. Seeing Squirtle now, distraught, regretful, and haunted by Charmander’s death. It crushes me. I could only imagine how broken down Squirtle must’ve felt that day.

So, here are some possible theories. Theory 1: Squirtle managed to step in between Charmander and Caterpie. Theory 2: Squirtle threw a PokéBall at Caterpie. Theory 3: Bulbasaur somehow managed to set himself free and rescued Charmander. Theory 4: According to the glitch ending, Hitmonchan and/or MissingNo. suddenly appeared between those two. I'm surprised how many people actually forgot about the disappearance of Hitmonchan, where his PokéBall got crashed while being transferred back into it. There even was a hint in a later episode that something will happen. Even if Charmander has a dark side on himself, the final situation actually made me sad anyway. I love the Starter Squad and I don't want to see anyone of them suffering like this. Also I loved the reappearance of Whiskers, it was a blast seeing her being evolved! Looking forward for the next episode, no matter how much time it'll take to wait! Keep up the great and stunning work!

Both Charmander and the Leader are drunk on getting revenge on each other while never thinking about the lives it costs for either of them to achieve this. Charmander didn't care very much about the Caterpies or ever empathized just /why/ they ended up going after him in the first place. Their leader got too obsessed with bringing justice for Pablo while in the end costing them many more lives. Deep down neither of their motives had any malevolence, but the means of doing so was their downfall. Pablo would've wanted peace, even if it meant he'd be unavenged knowing the cost of "justice".

Actually, he should have. Charmander survived 3 tackles minimum from Nidorina followed by 6 water guns from Squirtle, which, given this takes place in gen 1 rules, means charmander is at least level 23.

I used to write my own pokemon series, and my main character was a Charmander with a genetic evolution disability. He had to wait until later levels to hit Charmeleon, and then somewhere in the 60s to become Charizard. I used to think only I did this sort of thing, but looking at this Charmander now, he is either lowkey disadvantaged, or just EXTREMELY tough in stats for a low leveled Charmander.
