Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
Al Ljutic (LEW-tic) was quite the interesting character, from his early days as a professional boxer to his selection for the US 1940 Olympic rifle team, to his eventual primary business making excellent high-end trap shotguns. One of the first was a gun he built for himself which wound up becoming the Space Gun. A very unorthodox looking gun, it offered remarkable recoil reduction for a single shot 12ga, as well as a very natural fit and sight picture. Only about 200 were ever made, though, as Ljutic focused instead on his Mono-Gun, which was a much more tradition looking (but no less excellent) design, and which became very popular.
This is Space Gun #107, and we can take a look at the locking and firing system which makes it so comfortable to shoot. Basically, it is a single shot bolt action with a very heavy striker, the forward impact of which counteracts some of the rearward recoil of firing. This is sometimes describes (incorrectly) as being a slam-fire gun...

Its understandable how people blame KZbin but in reality this is not KZbins fault. KZbin is a free to use service and the way they make money is through advertising. Advertisers are very concerned about about their image and therefore they are very careful about where their ads are shown and guns are one of those contested topics, advertisers don't want their ads to be shown in gun related videos. KZbin must cater to the advertisers because if they don't the advertisers flee and KZbin doesn't get any money. If KZbin doesn't get money from ads they must get it from elsewhere and the easiest way would be to make KZbin a subscription based service instead of free to use. I still prefer KZbin to be free to use instead of having to pay a monthly subscription.

I’m an NSSA shooter, and you see release triggers from time to time. The purpose is to correct flinch when pulling the trigger. Personally, I think they’re unsafe. The procedure for a “no-bird” is to point the gun down range and shoot the round since there’s no way to release the trigger without firing.
@simiwing
@simiwing Жыл бұрын
Release triggers show up a lot in the trap world. On a break open shotgun, it is very easy to clear the gun after you set the trigger. You simply use your non-trigger hand to operate the barrel release lever. This lets the barrel pivot out of the way of the firing pin. You can then release the trigger as the firing pin won't contact the shell. On a semi-auto shotgun, I think they are very unsafe.
@CCW1911
@CCW1911 Жыл бұрын
How is firing the gun downrange in the direction you would be shooting anyway unsafe? I'm not a fan of release triggers in the least but understand why some people need them to continue in the sport they love. On break open guns you simply open the action and then release the trigger, with some pumps and semi autos applying the safety will reset the trigger a few have a separate lever to reset and some you have the choice of awkwardly ejecting the round or just firing the round downrange in a safe manner. The only sport I've competed in the allows release triggers is American Trap which only allows one round to be in the gun.
@webby2275
@webby2275 Жыл бұрын
@CCW1911 Consider how limited your options become if a person were to unexpectedly be found down range. That pretty much leaves you with keeping the trigger depressed, which keeps the gun about as unsafe as possible, firing upwards, firing downwards or firing around the person.

As an avid trapshooter for over 50 years, I had the pleasure of meeting Al and son Joe back in the 60’s and 70’s at the Grand American in Vandalia Ohio. Although the Spacegun didn’t take off, the Monogun was well sought after. It was a beautifully built piece and was often seen on the firing line. Your mention of the release trigger is interesting. It primarily came into popularity to midigate the effects of flinching. Most with this condition would jerk terribly when trying to pull the trigger and not allow them to actually pull the trigger resulting in a missed target. A release trigger did not cure a flinch, but when you did, the jerk would bring your finger off the trigger at the right time usually resulting in a broken target.

Ian, Many lifetimes gone, I shot skeet at the Oak Tree Gun Club in Southern California. Of course trap was the big draw and I actually shot a round or two but skeet was my game. But I digress. On several occasions I saw not one but two Ljutic Spaceguns in the gun racks. Always during trap tournaments. They were a can’t miss item! Interestingly, the gentlemen who owned said shotguns were only mediocre gunners at best. Once I witnessed an informal round of trap where the gentleman using the space gun was not the owner. In four rounds he scored 100 out of 100. Sometimes a good gun just needs to be in the right hands. Those shotguns were strange to behold yet strikingly handsome at the same time. Your specimen is very easy on the eyes. And in the intervening years it has grown significantly less strange. Thank you for a walk down memory lane. Or would it be a trip down the rabbit hole? Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul

Yes, KZbin no longer allows promotion of gun sales or gun sellers. Saying that a gun is for sale is not allowed.

Years ago I went to the local range for a little skeet. The guy next to me had a Spacegun. I was so distracted looking at it that I forgot to load up a couple of times! After the session, the owner held the Spacegun while I looked it over. I was impressed and have watched for one to become available. Alas, so far I've failed.

Interesting trip down memory lane seeing the Space Gun and hearing about Al Ljutic. Al was a very mercurial character whose antics spawned many trap range stories over the years. His wife, Nadine, seemed to be the stable force who kept the company prospering over the years. I always enjoyed my visits to their offices in Yakima all those long years ago. Also, I believe Al died in 2011 at age 94.

I've wanted a Ljutic Space Gun in 308 Winchester ever since I saw one listed in Gun Digest back around 1986 or 1987. I thought they were a little pricey back then (Around $1000). I believe the rifles versions were called: "Space Rifles" in catalogs back then.

@@bayersbluebayoubioweapon8477 It was in an auction room, it was listed as a walking cane not a gun cane, someone picked it up, if you tilt them the trigger comes out and then can be pulled. someone picked it up and pressed it. was in the local paper. same as sword canes. I think they banned those things.

I remember when these guns came out. The brochure showed several different versions. At the time my friends and I wondered who American astronauts might want to shoot at since space exploration was meant to be a peaceful endeavour. Alien lifeforms perhaps? It would be marvellous if you could one day do a video on the TP-82 combination pistol which really did go into space many times. It was never intended to be used in space but rather as a survival aid for cosmonauts landing in the Siberian wilderness while they waited for rescue.

Here's an official resume of KZbin's rules: Your video will be taken down if:, 1-Someone with money doesn't like it. 2-Some media company doesn't want you posting it. 3-A random KZbin employee dislikes you/your content/your video. 4-We decide the video has harmful content (as for what harmful content is, please refer to rules 1, 2 and 3).

I was kinda expecting some sort of low caliber recoilless rifle for use in actual space. The way you have to keep pulling the bolt back while dropping the shell in seems like a pain in the ass. Hold the gun with one hand, pull with the other, insert the shell with your third hand?

Ha, both the ATA AND PITA allow release triggers. It's used by shooters who have a problem with Flinching. It is somewhat unsafe when shooter start using them. My home trap club had a shooter shoot his big toe off. He had the muzzle resting on his toe. This was at the Annual Grand American Trap Championship.

I am german and such a gun was shown in a Swiss arms magazine. There was in 1980s an austrian TV Comedy Show,, Kottan ermittelt ' ( Kottan investigates). There appeared a one- legged detective, and author of Swiss arms magazine article thought, this gun would be a good crotch (?) / Krücke for the one- legged detective of Comedy Show.
