The Long Dark:Timberwolf Survival Strategies

You're missing the Alpha Strike strategy (which is the best, imo). Here are 8 facts about Timberwolves that you make use of on this strategy: 1. Unalerted timberwolves will wander directly towards you *as individuals* based on your scent + proximity. 2. A timberwolf will "signal the alarm" (triggering the pack to chase you) by doing a howling animation ONLY once it is within *visual* range of you. 3. You can seriously reduce the visual range of timberwolves by crouching. 4. You can fire your bow from crouching at Bow Level 5. 5. The howling "alert" animation freezes a timberwolf in place for a surprising amount of time. 6. 4-wolf packs *always* breaks their morale when you kill 2 Timberwolves. 7. 2-wolf packs *always* break their morale when you kill 1 Timberwolf. 8. 1-wolf packs *never* alert, and always run away from you. (Like all 4 did in your blooper clip.) Now, here's the Alpha Strike strategy: Step 1: Crouch towards the Timberwolves with your bow out. Step 2: Headshot the lead Timberwolf -- it will be walking at a fixed pace on a straight line towards you. It's an easy shot with your bow if you're careful (see facts 1, 2, 3, and 4). 1 Timby down. Step 3: When the second Timberwolf alerts, it will be frozen in place for a surprising amount of time (see fact 5). Line up a clean headshot and kill it. The pack will now break (see fact 6). Step 4: A day or so later, the two remaining Timberwolves will walk towards you based on scent again. As before, crouch towards them, and try to kill the lead wolf before it alerts. Even if you miss, when the lead wolf alerts, it very easy to get the alert animation kill. The pack will now break (see fact 7). Step 5: The last remaining Timby will never alert (see fact 8). So enjoy 10+ days (when the entire pack respawns) of not being bothered by that Timberwolf pack. You basically always get 1 kill before they alert, and 1 kill during the alert -- which means you NEVER have to fight Timbies during a chase. If you mess up either the pre-alarm kill or the alarm kill, just run inside a house (break aggro) and start over.

This worked better when you could avoid timber wolf areas till later in the game, when you are equipped and lvl 5 bow. Now they will be a challenge earlier and with the moving spawns, we can't be prepared so easily. The surprise timber would pack is scary! 😂

@jitwire You may also like to know about Wolf Kiting - I came up with it myself and haven't seen it posted here: 1. Get to a location wolves can't reach (car/campfire/cliff) 2. Pass time (use whetstone or clean firearms) 3. Since wolves can't reach you, they'll run away Pros: No special tools like flares needed Cons: Need a safe, unreachable spot + not always 100% consistent

This was great, did not realize that the red flares or torches were effective at all, because I always used marine flares, prior to part 6, then I got hit by Timberwolves in pleasant valley..., now trying to figure out if campfires work on the cougar...cheers!

I will often use the revolver with the bedroll sniper trick of using the temporary cursor dot to hip fire a little more accurately.

Some extra tips I’ve learned about timbies 1: Timberwolves can be sniped from a distance to clear the pack. Using a bow and killing them 1 by 1 can work, though it does require good aim since you do need to hit headshots. 2: Timberwolves don’t do the standard pin attacks outside certain areas. Currently, the only zone I remember them doing pin attacks in is the cannery, though this might have changed with the wildlife refresh. 3: a bit of a strange technique but, if you can have Timberwolves catch your scent, they’ll start to stalk towards you like normal wolves. However, it seems their moral system doesn’t let other Timberwolves catch on, meaning if the pack is slowly stalking towards you location, and you shoot one un-noticed, the rest will continue onward for you to shoot. I’ve used this twice in the cannery now, with the wind blowing my scent into the cannery ontop of the hill jitwire was standing on in the beginning. I cleared out a whole pack without having to actually engage the pack.

I only play Interloper and after 1.5k hours its the first time I've started a custom run to disable them. They often feel buggy and can be frustrating with the re aggro to the point where I'm not enjoying the game. If they would drop unique fur to craft/improve gear I'd see a purpose to them, or if they had 12-24 in game hour cool down on jumping you again. But that's just my opinion after last horizon 😂

I think I can give you an answer to why the timber wolves were running. It's not 100% effective but if your wearing the bear thingy (bare with me I can't remember what it's called 😅) it can sometimes scare off the timber wolves. At least on stalker difficulty. I've yet to have it happen on interloper tho.
