After President Benson warned the members of the church in 1986 that the condemnation given of the Lord in 1832 still rested on the church because they had taken lightly the Book of Mormon, I vowed to read it every day and now, 33 years later, I have kept that promise, only missing 61 days in that time. I love that book. I know it is the word of God and love reading it and bearing testimony of it. It's true!

@@raysalmon6566 For clarification, history apart from the Book of Mormon doesn't prove or disprove anything about the Book of Mormon. History is very, very useful but also a highly imperfect study. History is definitely not the foundation of our faith; our faith comes from God no matter how much history we know.
@00Fisher00

@@raysalmon6566 I love good questions, though I'd have to say that I don't find them uncomfortable. I've long been accustomed to the idea that there is much I don't know, and questions are opportunities to learn. It's also nice when we get answers, but anyone pursuing knowledge properly knows that many answers do not come right away. (PhD students slaving away over research--that may or may not come to anything--will attest to that, but I'm sure you understand that already.) There is some history in the Book of Mormon, but we don't have much of any correlation between it and history that we have from other sources. That is not uncommon. Many people in the world know very little about history and many have very limited access to education, but all can communicate with God. Heartburn is not what disciples of Christ seek; we look for confirmation from the Holy Ghost about the truth of scripture. We learn about the Holy Ghost in both the Bible and the Book of Mormon. I don't presume to demand answers from God, but I do know that He gives them in the way He knows is best. Latter-day saints greatly value education, but when we receive a witness from God, that is worth more than anything else. It is my great desire for you that you will seek and receive the same witness from God about the truth of the Book of Mormon that many of us have received.

Well, the only record we have of them is made from Nephi's point of view, so we can't compare it to what point of view they had. Every character has a story, we must admit that there is a bias here and give room to accept other representations.
@RuminantCounter
@RuminantCounter 5 жыл бұрын
It's Nephi's point of view recorded many years after the fact, after Lehi had died and the two groups had seperated. In hindsight, Nephi was able to see exactly where his brother's attitudes had led them. But he also remembers and records those times that they repented and when they were obedient. Nephi records several passages indicating how much it grieves him that his older brothers never assumed the proper role of righteous leadership that his culture had led him to expect. I think the movie does a good job of showing his sadness as well as his faith.

@Cesar Gomez Lol...yes, Satan is focusing on destroying the American church from within America. And a testimony is most important? Well, there are lots of people who have testimonies and spiritual witnesses of their respective religions and faith's. You're experience is not unique, and it in no way proves anything about the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. There is no archaeological evidence or historical evidence of the Book of Mormon. If there had been such a large and diverse civilization, with battles the size and scale of what is mentioned in the BoM, then there would be evidence of such. Why are we able to find evidence of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Mayan, and Aztec civilizations with ease, and yet we have ZERO evidence of an entire civilization of people living in the Americas and worshiping a white, bearded, Jewish man? Where are the intricate carvings of the battles? The pictograph of the horses? The steel swords? The written records of the people? If the record that was written on the plates was sooo sacred and vital, surely there would have been more copies made. Why did God take the gold plates back, when they would have been literally the GREATEST archaeological find of the century? He allowed the dead sea scrolls to be found and kept? Anyways...the BoM is only true bc deep in your heart you WANT it to be true. The reality is that its a work of early 19th century fiction by a frontier con-man who also exhibited the same behaviors we see in modern cult leaders and sexual predators. I have a testimony that the book is false, and is a work of fiction, and that the events described in the Book of Mormon never occurred.

@@raysalmon6566 True. There is also archeological evidence in support that Christ did visit the American continent as well. But with all things that require faith, evidence can be found where one wants to find it. Ultimately, the onus lies on us individually to seek out and confirm our beliefs personally, and to keep a testimony alive and healthy within. I think of the example of Mary being told she would be the mother to the Christ child. The scriptures say after Christ was born and many were sent by angels to bear witness of the event, that "... Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart." (Luke 2:19, KJV). So, too, we as individuals have the responsibility to notice the miracles in our lives, and to ponder them in our hearts. In this way, our faith and testimony in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Divine mission and teachings can become personal to us, regardless of what proof or evidence may be discovered by scholars and scientists. 🤟

@@raysalmon6566 I should add that 2600 years have passed since Lehi's family went through the area. We'd be pretty naive to assume that everything was the same as it used to be. Plant life can change easily in much shorter amounts of time, and even geography can significantly change. If you read an account from 1000 years ago about a land bridge connecting what we now know as Washington and Oregon, you'd probably be inclined to think that it was an impossibility given that there is a river there flowing out to the ocean. We can easily drive the length of the river and clearly see no land bridge, and it wouldn't even make sense to us. And yet there was formerly a land bridge, right by where the Bonneville Dam is now. The original Bridge of the Gods collapsed centuries ago, though a modern structure is named after it. It's been a long, long time since it has been around, but if a person had written an account that included the original land bridge we'd have no reason based on that element alone to doubt their story. As far as naming rivers is concerned, everyone who used the name "Laman" for a river in the region moved on, so no one else in the area would know about that and we should have no particular expectation of seeing an existing terrain feature with that name. Where questions are concerned, what I can say is that questions have answers even if we don't know them right away. It would be easy for someone to doubt the account of the Book of Mormon based on the concerns you raised, though you can see that with some additional thought there's no need for concern. Eventually, a hundred questions will be answered one by one until they've dwindled down to nothing; having the questions is fine as long as they don't bog us down spiritually. For members of the Church, receiving a witness about the truth of the Book of Mormon from God makes it easy to set aside unanswered questions and accept that we just won't know certain things for a while (even though other people might know them already). It's not so different from people following the scientific method and realizing that some answers to our best questions remain to be answered and might not be for a long time. So questions are great and help us learn, but we shouldn't let them be an impediment. I hope that you find those thoughts insightful and helpful.

@@tjbutler6121 If, indeed, you were a member of the Church for many years, you should have observed this, but the apostles have all served untold hours of unpaid service for many years while working full-time at their careers and raising families. When they became apostles, they had to give up their lucrative careers in order to serve full-time. They get a stipend now instead, but remember that they were all very financially successful and well-paid before. If their objective was financial gain, they wouldn't have given thousands of hours of unpaid service, and they wouldn't have given up their careers. Also, the Church goes to extensive efforts to help people achieve self-reliance, again through the service of unpaid volunteers. For myself, my family ate free food from the Church for many years when I was young. Church programs have blessed the lives of so many people. I'm sorry you have taken such a negative view of such a wonderful church.

@@tjbutler6121 My family wasn't required to do anything. We got free food. These days I'm glad to take my kids to help me clean a church building from time to time; on one hand, they learn selfless service, and on the other, we have a clean building to use for worship. Welfare is unlimited. Bishops don't have a limit to the checks they write to help people near them. The Church additionally devotes a lot of money to other causes such as humanitarian aid and disaster relief. Again, if the apostles had been focused on earning money, they wouldn't have dedicates thousands of hours of unpaid service and wouldn't have given up their lucrative careers. I don't argue that there are men in the Church who have committed great sins, such as adultery. Those sins, are, of course, in direct contradiction to what is taught in the Church. Bishops have to make hard decisions about how much to support people, so as to attend to their needs while not encouraging an improper dependence that would work against the goal of self-reliance. I'm sure that sometimes they get that balance wrong, and sometimes they get it right but it might seem wrong to an outside observer. That being said, there are endless examples of people receiving extensive financial assistance (on top of of physical labor, counseling, and many more services) through the Church. I could direct you to many, many people who have benefited from all of this, but I'm sure you could come up with many examples yourself. The good done by and through the Church is undeniable and enormous. When you use a purely pejorative term like "cult", though, it gives an indication of improper and severe bias against the Church. My challenge to you is to simply be honest about the good that the Church does.

That happens all the time. I don't consider the "RLDS" a reliable source of knowledge. I don't base my faith on a lie. I base my faith in God and my experience with Him. Sarah, think of the trust that they all had to put in Lehi's righteousness. What a great example of a priesthood holder. Think of the trust Sariah put in him! There had to be a history of that type of righteousness for Sariah to put that level of trust in his dreams and words. She had to get her own revelation or she would have been as angsty as Laman and Lemuel I suppose.

I love the audio summary of each video and especially the "based on actual events as recorded in the Book of Mormon". So many times the spiritual historical events of the Bible and Book of Mormon are depicted as "stories" and not "actual events" that occurred in history. This is what makes them so important to us. The scriptural events handed down to us and not watered down in translations over time. One translation, one documented record of theses events, depictions and references. This makes it easier to go from video to actual reading of the Book of Mormon for anyone.

(Deseret News, June 18, 2010) Was it truth when Joseph Smith said the Book of Abraham was translated from scrolls that were written by Abraham himself? (Book of Abraham, introduction) Or is truth when the leaders of the church today admit that the scrolls Joseph had do not match the translation from the Book of Abraham, and weren’t even from Abraham’s time? (Translation and Historicity of the Book of Abraham, 2014) Was it truth when Brigham Young taught that polygamy was essential to obtaining exaltation? (Journal of Discourses 11:269) Or was it truth when Gordon B. Hinckley said that polygamy was not doctrinal? (Larry King Live, September 1998) Was it truth when Brigham Young banned black people from receiving the priesthood (and more importantly from entering the temple), and when he and other leaders taught that black people would only enter the celestial kingdom as servants (Mark E. Peterson August 27, 1954) taught that a white person who married a black person would be killed on the spot (Journal of Discourses 7:290-291; 10:110), taught that black people would be the last of God’s children to receive the priesthood (Journal of Discourses, 7:290), and taught that black people were less valiant in the preexistence? (Statement by the First Presidency, August 17, 1949) Was it truth when for over 100 years every prophet from Brigham Young to Harold B. Lee upheld these racist teachings and policies? Or was it truth when the ban was lifted? Is it truth when today’s leaders “disavow these theories?” (Race and the Priesthood, 2013) Was it truth when Harold B. Lee taught that people with disabilities were less valiant in the preexistence? (Decisions for Successful Living, p. 165) Or is the truth that we are much more than our disabilities and our temporary afflictions? (Jeffrey R. Holland, Like a Broken Vessel, October 2013 General Conference) Was it truth when Boyd K. Packer taught that someone couldn’t have “inborn tendencies” (aka: be born gay) because God wouldn’t do that to his children? (Boyd K. Packer, Cleansing the Inner Vessel, October 2010 General Conference) Or was it truth when leaders taught that same sex attraction wasn’t a sin but acting on it was? (M. Russell Ballard, The Lord Needs You Now!, Ensign Sep. 2015) Was it truth when the leaders implemented a policy in 2015 that children of same sex couples should be prohibited from being baptized? Or was it truth when only 4 years later “God” changed his mind and the policy was reversed?

Bushcraft. "History book"?? If it really was a history book, BYU History Department would list the Book of Mormon as part of it History curriculum! I've been out of touch for a couple of decades, with LDS/BYU news flashes...meaning, I could have missed the news that BYU DOES NOW list the Book of Mormon as one of it's HISTORY offerings?? Please let me know...
