A little bit of that was probably the general disrespect towards fantasy films (understandably) that LoTR itself broke through eventually, so Fellowship and Two Towers paved the way for Return to be as appreciated as it was. Also no one really knew about the insane work that went into these films at the time, you have to watch through the entire extended extras to really grasp it.

Its so wierd to me to think that this movie happened when I was 11 years old. It feels so timeless to me. Its still my favorite movie to these days. And it holds up and even outdoes todays special effects to me, because there was so much that they filmed and didn't rely on an overabundance of CGI.
