I think the shields are fairly low tech for the Covenant, so the Elites got their more advanced personal shields, Jackals got these 2 dimensional shields, and then I get the feeling that despite the Prophets ultimately picking the Brutes over the Elites, they never really trusted them, and hesitated to give them any tech. Interestingly, Xperia brought up the front line issues as well, and it seems pretty canon that the Covenant could breed as many Grunts as they could handle, so the whole point of these short range Jackals is kinda confusing from a plot perspective. I suppose one could read into the civil war thing and figure that maybe the Prophets deliberately played these 2 races off of each other to ensure that if/when a rebellion occurred from these 'lesser' races, the upper tiers of the Covenant wouldn't be the focus.

ref206a Elites already have shield tech, much better ones at that, and consider using Jackal shields to be beneath them/cowardly. In one of the Kilo 5 trilogy books, an Elite commander forces his Elite troops to use them to besiege the group of Spartan IIIs and handful of Spartan IIs, much to his men’s grumbling complaints. At a glance, Jackal shields _seem_ better since they, at least in Halo 1, completely deflect most human weapons, but not only do they easily overload, they don’t recharge easily the way Elite shields do, which makes them less consistent and reliable than Elites’ personal shield tech.

Am I the only person who actually _liked_ the Jackal Snipers? They gave me an opportunity to play slowly and methodically in a game that was otherwise geared towards charging in guns blazing. Countersniping the Jackal Snipers was the Halo 2 equivalent of sneaking around a room full of sleeping Grunts and whacking them all over the back of the head to kill them without waking anyone up.

I always thought the Jackal snipers were a covenant response to Human snipers. None of the other species really used snipers until the events of Halo 2. Elites were too proud to use snipers, Brutes too focused on savagery, grunts are grunts, buggers were engineers, and hunters were walking tanks. I remember a scene in Halo: Reach where Jun says that a sniper rifle can take the hat off an elite from two thousand yards. If Snipers hid themselves and killed high-priority targets often, I can see how that would be a problem for the covenant.

I won’t lie. When I did my Halo 2 run through on legendary, I ended up memorizing the position and number of jackal snipers on every map. The absolute worst was on New Mombasa, in the courtyard where the gauss warthog is. There must have been somewhere around 15 of them. And I died 14 times finding that out.

3 yrs late, but they spawn in the far left. Playing it on heroic, the best thing to do on that mission is MAKE SURE to keep at least 1 marine w a rocket launcher alive til the gauss hog. Use a beam rifle or a battle rifle and the sniper rifle to the right by the rock. Beam rifles for the other marines too before exiting the tunnel. That's the challenge of those sniper raptors

The reason the Jakals are deployed on the front line is due to a few reasons but a few are high on the list: 1. They are quite agile, far more agile than the Grunts and more flexible and difficult to track than Elites. 2. They have good eye sight, in a close combat role they can prioritize key targets with high power weapons quicker and with greater precision 3. They have slightly better morale 4. Really cheap to hire, they have a ton of them 5. They can use a broader specturm of range weapons that Grunts cannot use effectively

in defence to the front line soldier application of Jackles. It's really the fact that we mostly see them faced against a spartan that they seem so frail. they're very likely as strong as a human, though their bones may be slightly weaker given their avian like nature. But that being said, for normal marines, Jackal front line units would still be very effective, their use of the shields makes them extremely hard to accurately hit while they shoot back, and their nimble nature makes them able to traverse battle fields as well or even better than the sangheili can. getting into firing possitions to snuff out defense possitions while being able to defend themselves from incoming fire when they try to flank their enemy's defenses.

Then imagine being able to play as Jackals. Leaping high into places (that even Spartans have trouble getting to), and take out your long-range weapons and take out your foes. Or if you're forced to fight on the ground or in tight pathways, you're able to pull out your trusty shield and pepper enemies with your plasma pistol or Needler, or any other one hand weapon you can hold and use. Or maybe smack them in the face with a weapon if they got to close, or have a knife on hand just in case. Would be an interesting thing in a multiplayer option i think. Would kind of make sense if they could be mercenaries, and you hired one or two to aid you in your mission (lore-wise i mean) being controlled by friends or other players. And if Brutes were playable as well (again if as if they're mercenaries or Ex-covenant), then i imagine you'd smack and toss enemies away and into walls with a satisfying (Thud) or (Crack).
