I love beach environments in video games - especially when it comes to Super Mario Bros. Koopa Troopa Beach, Cheep Cheep Beach, and many more come to mind. But deep within the files of Mario Kart DS lays a beach that I've never traversed before... And many others have never been there as well. This really reminds me of the Peach Beach level from Mario Kart Wii, almost like it was reconsidered! The similarities are undeniable. Peach Beach has the rock and split paths, along with the chained islands.

Mike Jr 77 Mario Kart Wii. So many technical skills to be learned from it even to this day (tricks, types of drifts, etc), bikes, wheelies, and inside drift, insane shortcuts (the last main MK game before Lakitu would pick you up as soon as you left the track), different play styles, online to this day with a very dedicated community, has a very large skill cap but allows newer players to easily start, no two races are ever the same (perfect balance of randomness and variety). But hey, if Double Dash is your favorite, I’m good with that, it’s definitely my second favorite. Those were just my reasons for liking Mario kart Wii the most. It’s a shame they didn’t bring the two character per kart mechanic back yet... but maybe it was best that it could stay on double dash so that we could still appreciate the game for its unique style out of the rest of the game.

I'm a bit nostalgic for Nokonoko Course, despite never playing it I used to watch tones of videos of the unused beta tracks of Mario Kart DS when I was 10 and Nokonoko is a course I strongly remember as it felt a lot more complete than the others. My best guess is that this course is a very early version of Cheep Cheep Beach before the course got redesigned.

I loved those "unused" courses for MKDS as a child. There were Action Replay cheat codes for each of them (though GCN Mario Circuit was only available in untextured form for a long time). Also remember how long it took me to type in these codes manually from the internet (as my Action replay didn't feature a USB connector). So glad those times are behind us 😁

I remember discovering this course and many of the other unused courses as a kid because I had the game on my R4 which had cheats pre-built in. I didn't know what these courses were at the time and why they were completly white, I always found the test circle the most interesting.

It was reused in a different edition of the Game, and there's more Goombas, Koopas, and Cheep Cheeps. The short path is cut through the small hole in the Rock, then take the narrow path, but it's only faster if the Water is lower, but if it's higher it's ~4x slower (~25% Speed) than just driving the long way around without boosts or jumps. It's a great fun level, and I loved it. You're correct about the Chaos of 8~12 racers sharing such a narrow strip of land, but once the Powerups start flying about, it's either Calm or Chaos, but it tends towards Clam until the last lap, then the CPU starts getting Blue Shells cause you're a half a lap ahead (cause you ran past the infighting), and then the game starts cheating to stop you (I've seen it happen, 3 Blue Shells + 2 Red Shells, in the final stretch, and I still won, by 0.001 seconds). I think the level is available on the Wii or DS. Sorry I couldn't remember exactly which version.

The dark sand likely was going to be covered up by water half the time, but it was never coded in. You can see this in Cheep Cheep Beach, the darker sand gets covered up by water that acts like offroad when the tide comes in. This means that the sand bar alternate paths and such were originally intended to be rare, opportunistic alternate paths that only come into play at some times

I have Mario Kart DS on an R4 I have that I took from a friend and it comes with codes for the lost levels, although they're completely untexured and the game will crash if you fall off the courses that have edges, like Nokonoko. But they're still really fun to play regardless and I'm just glad I now got to see what Nokonoko looks like completely retextured and fully playable with no game crashing. Oh yeah I remember this race, on R3 or R4 cards, with codes, we could run them on the DS, besides I remember that there were other unused circuits like Dokan_course, Test1_course, Test_circle_course or the unused version of Mario Circuit from MKDD.
