I think there were several book series and tv shows (Supernatural being one of them) that have tried to explain the disappearance of the Roanoke colony. The other thing that is unfortunate as well is that the chances of finding any possible descendants after all this time, is all but impossible. The dna traces would be too small to distinguish, and most of the native tribes of the New England region of America were practically wiped out in subsequent epidemics and conflicts with the colonials. There are few descendants today….

Assuming that at least some of the colonists did survive, which seems likely as you mention, I try to put myself in their shoes and I can only imagine that they must have lived out the rest of their lives in awe and incredulity that seemingly nobody ever bothered to come and find them.
@JayStrun
@JayStrun 2 жыл бұрын
Most colonists of the time understood (I believe through being told) that a rescue operation was not guaranteed. If they failed to be accounted for, they were most often on their own.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 жыл бұрын
@@JayStrun although I can't recall seeing that written often into what older journals/accounts I've read (I've hardly read them all), it seems entirely reasonable that a colonist being left in the New World in that era would have had at least an implicit understanding of the risks and realities involved. It's not so much that I think they would've expected some sort of urgent and swift rescue operation, but moreso that some of these people probably lived for decades afterwards, possibly even learning through the grapevine about countless voyages of their countrymen landing in relatively nearby places, and thought," Damn... literally NOBODY could get around to even bothering to try to find us after all these years?" The notion that these rather ordinary, albeit perhaps adventurous, people would've had some sort of unwaveringly stoic commitment to colonization to the point that they would've just dispassionately shrugged their shoulders at the prospect of being left behind forever with no explanation... just seems pretty unlikely to me.
@christiansaenscheidt9056

These are people which expected one in three to two of their kids to die and reach an age of around 40. Risks look VERY different when you consider that.
@meganoob12
@meganoob12 2 жыл бұрын
Colonists were usually people who were considered "unwanted" in Europe. They often agreed to go to the new world, because they were outsiders in their own countries anyways. It was common for heretics to join these undertakings. I think they didn't really expect anyone to really care what happened to them.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 2 жыл бұрын
I will concede that, no matter how we cut it, trying to imagine the mindset of these folks comes down largely to speculation. Frankly, good points have been made about the general hardships of life in that era and the risks of being a colonist which would've been implied in those days. But I think some of you have very one-dimensional, cartoonish notions about people of that era. People lived harder lives, but they were still people just the same. Even if they were more accustomed to hardship and even if they understood the dangers of remote colonization, they hardly ceased having fears, sorrows, angers, doubts, regrets, etc. They certainly weren't stoic and emotionless, folks. Did they resign themselves to their fate? Some probably did, more as a function of their own personal temperament than anything else. But to think that they all just shrugged when nobody returned... that they never wondered why or what happened... that they never pondered whatever became of friends and family back home... that they never held out hope that one day somebody would return for them... that their thoughts never drifted longingly to land of their birth... well, that's just plain far-fetched. You're painting a picture of these people as virtually non-human. Look at the histories of old European colonies around the world that left us journals and you'll find that people, even in those situations of duress and hardship, still had delicate sensibilities and plenty of capacity for self-reflection and emotion.

I actually had family from the Outer Banks, specifically Nag’s Head, so this has some personal connections. They used to go about with lanterns tied to goats’ heads and “guide” ships to shore i.e. lure them to crash before stealing what they could. They later actually became some of the first members of the Coast Guard. That and I’m related to Sir Walter Raleigh, so that’s double the connection.

Illuminaughti did a video on this and she talked about that the local natives had a cultural base with the Algonquin. She talked about that the Algonquin and the peoples who shared a cultural base with them have stories about a malevolent spirit of famine and cannibalism called the Wendigo and that the only way to ward it off was to share your bounty with your neighbors, especially in times of famine. There were stories of various European colonies that had collapsed from famine, poor land management, etc...and that there were oral accounts of the natives living in the areas who would come across horrific sites of starvation and cannibalism out of desperation. The common ways that the natives would deal with cannibalism was to kill the people who had resorted to it,then discard of the body in an unmarked grave or into a river. She surmised that between the famine and growing tensions between the English colonists and the native peoples, the surviving colonists may have been scattered over a wide area of coastal Virginia.

I had recently found some useful information on Roanoke in relationship with the route traced at 3:47 You see that one of the stops in the Caribbean is in Puerto Rico. Ralph Lane and Sir Richard Grenville had landed there with the first colonists in 1585 as a temporary stopping point to gather food, wood and other supplies. They built a fort either named Fort Mosquetal or Fort Elizabeth at the mouth of the Tallaboa river in Penuelas. Today nothing remains of the settlement BUT the British Museum has a map and layout of the fort which may have been used as well to design Roanoke. It's something I would like to share.

"Main/e" is also an archaic/poetic word for "open sea", as well as for "mainland" - it just means the greater part of the land or sea, and apparently was once used in the form "main sea" as well as "mainland". The open sea version of this archaic form is certainly the one I'm more familiar with. In this context, there is no conflict with what John White is saying in that section of his 1590 writings. In this interpretation: He said that when he left the settlers were planning to relocate 50 miles [on an island] more out to sea. When he returned and found Croatoan carved on the settlement gatepost he was even more convinced that that was where they'd gone. Later, at the end of that passage he talks about finding certain trunks which the settlers had buried, including some of his own, which had been opened and the contents thrown around - but that he was happy because at least the fact that they'd been buried gave him great hope that the settlers had made it safely over to Croatoan. (i.e Burying the goods before leaving, presumably to come back for them later.) For me, White is being consistent throughout this passage.

I just went on a map and to find the distance between Roanoke Island and Hatteras. By car take a wild guess at the distance between the two? Approximately 50 miles. For me that is enough to say that is what they meant by going "50 miles into the maine". They were heading for Croatoan or Hatteras. Or at least some of them were.

I was actually watching another one of your videos just yet but I really wanted to say this to you! I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a while now and even though I follow a lot of history channels, yours still feels more real. I am living in Iran and we are currently experiencing some of our darkest times, and with everything that is happening around the world, I believe everyone in the world is feeling a bit depressed and sad. some more than others. however I have found that your comments, commentary, and reactions lifts up my spirit, helps me feel like the little boy I was when I first heard about history and the stories of men and women who achieved so much and made such impact in the world. What I have found even more incredible than your vast knowledge as well as your ability to accept mistakes and learn from them, is that you don’t talk about battles and wars and campaigns like those nameless and faceless men, women and children are not relevant or only statistics. In short, I don’t believe that you completely agree with the phrase “A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is statistics” and I implore you to never change this side of yourself. I know you have very little time and might not have time to read or reply to this comment. But I didn’t feel right without speaking my mind and also telling you that I appreciate you! Being in Iran, I haven’t been able to join your patrons, but I am an iOS developer and a good one, so if in that aspect, I can show my appreciation even more, do let me know!

I've done a bit of recent research on Roanoke and there's two of three points of interest I'd like to mention. Most of my info comes from a researcher named Andy Powell, who traveled to England and did in-depth genealogical studies into the backgrounds of the lost colonists back in the 90s. He has since passed on, but his work is a vital resource in understanding who these people were. That said, here's the first point. 1. Joh White didn't just leave his daughter and granddaughter behind. He was instrumental in forming this expedition. The vast majority of the lost colonists were his close personal friends who he recruited personally and promised a new life to. George Howe was a member of the same guild as Joh White. There was a colonist named Cuthbert White among the lost. A lot of these people attended the same church as Joh White, and there are several family connections among them as well. The colonists argued with White for days to get him to go back. The man did not want to go. 2. Andy Powell does some speculation in his research and I kind of believe one of his hypotheses. Simon Fernandes was a Portuguese pirate who was slated for execution. He was saved from the gallows by Sir Francis Walsingham, the spymaster to Elizabeth I. Walsingham also competed with Sir Walter Raleigh over the charter for the new world and lost out. It's argued quite convincingly by Dr. Powell that Fernandes actively sabotaged the expedition on Walsingham's orders. 3. The last one is more of a bonus fun fact. John Milton, of Paradise Lost fame, had an uncle, henry Milton, who was among the lost colonists.

My guess is the change in Climate and property values? North Carolina and South Carolina is obviously warmer but so is the water. Many of the people who vacation here from out of state, own a beach house or condo. From what I understand, talking to people from up north, everything is cheaper in N.C and S.C, including houses.

Lemmino is an absolute legend, so stoked to see you react to his videos as well! As most people here already mentioned, his Bermuda Triangle and Dyatlov Pass videos are excellent, I would also recommend the ones about DB Cooper, Flight 370 and Cicada 3301 (the last one perhaps isn't something you'd ordinarily check out on the channel, but it is an interesting watch, if anything). Keep up the amazing work, and, as always, all the best from Latvia!

Really enjoy your videos. Old NC History teacher, born and raised in North Carolina. Got a kick out of the Melungeons article because it was written by William S. Grew up in this area and always fascinated with the history surrounding the area. Big influence on my love of history. Both Wanchese and Manteo have towns named after them adjacent to each other on Roanoke Island. Portions of several movies and shows have been filmed there (Peanut Butter Falcon, Outer Banks, American Horror Story, etc.).

I feel so sorry for Mr. White - almost everything that went South was not by his actions and he could do nothing. Just nothing. He must have died in madness that he left his daughter out there and not knowing what actually happened. It is in my opinion the worst fate - not knowing.

My uncle adores the Wild West. And not only that, but also the period from the beginning of colonization. He introduced me to books and stories about trappers, the conquest of wild landscapes, the struggles of white people and Indians, and he passed that love on to me. Even today, people in our family call him Mike. Although his real name is Milan (slavic name). The first two stories he taught me were two mysteries. The Lost Colony of Roanoke and Franklin's Expedition. Also, since he plays acoustic guitar, he introduced me to country music, he even wrote some songs himself. Even today, even though I'm not young anymore and I'm 34 years old, when I go to him, it's like a time machine. We sit and talk for hours about American history. We dreamed of going to the USA together and we see some things together. Of course, that is not realistic, but I still believe that at least once I will go and see what we wanted together.

Roanoke's always captivated me. To me it might not be all that mysterious. I personally think what happened to them would/or could be a combination of everything mentioned in the video(s). Meaning that I could see some colonists trying to leave but getting lost at sea or getting captured, etc., then the rest potentially separating into 2 groups and relocating and what have you. My line of thinking on Roanoke ties into a lot with regards to history, that being that things aren't just one way or the other, but rather a combination of things (or factors).

16:00 i think the reason for arriving in Summer is related to the the long and difficult journey to reach america. I'm not an expert on navigation but i think it's safe to say that traversing the atlantic during winter was not something easy to do at the time. Also arriving in summer is desirable considering that the colonist would have no structures to protect them from the cold and the weather so their first job would be the construction of homes for everyone.
