After Star Wars A New Hope but before Empire Strikes back existed a potential Star Wars sequel called Splinter Of The Mind's Eye. It became a book and a comic but now it's a...KZbin...retelling. A Star Wars motion comic if you will. Joy.

Something tells me Darth Vader wouldn't be so greatly remembered as one of the best villains ever if they had released a movie where he was defeated by tripping over his own severed arm. Darth Vader - defeated by clumsiness.

I wonder if the comic depicted one of the more controversial things from the book--the Force Grenade. During the final battle, Darthie bends over and grunts like he's got to poo, then stands up with a ball of light in his hand--a turd made of 100% Force Concentrate--and chucks it at Luke in an attempt to blow him up. Seems like an actual grenade would be simpler. ...Oh, and also the scene in which Luke and Leia are camped out for the night and Luke, taking watch, looks Leia over and *has to remind himself not to jump her while she's asleep*. Even if they DIDN'T turn out to be brother and sister, that's MEGA-EWWWWW.

I never read the graphic novel, but I read the novelization. In the novelization, I don't think he trips over his arm (although, I admit, it's been a LONG time since I read it), although I'm not sure the original reason for him falling is any less ridiculous - if I recall correctly, Vader is basically so messed up due to his fight with Luke (after all, his arm did just get cut off), that he can't even walk a straight line - he's basically staggering toward Luke to finish him off, zig-zagging his way toward him, and his zig-zagging simply leads him to fall into the hole...like a drunk.

Keep in mind, if this were canon, Luke's entire Jedi training up to this point would have consisted of about 2 hours with Obi-wan on the Falcon getting zapped by that little laser ball thing. And Obi-wan never told him anything about Jedi lifting things with their minds. So as far as Luke is aware, the Force is just being able to wave your hands around and make stupid people do things for you.

The incest is about as real with this book as it is with Empire Strikes Back (in fact, possibly even less real, because there is not even an actual kiss in this book). Like yeah, there are hints that Luke is attracted to Leia, but it's all pretty innocent - no one makes any move on the other one. I seriously wonder where do people get these ideas that there is some real incest in this book... I have a feeling that these people haven't actually read the damn book...

Well actually the storys of the prequels where good. The Problem was the writing, the acting and the execution of the Projejkt. If you write stiff dialouges for a movie, the actors can do their best and still sound like wooden puppets. The main problems where the portrait of Anakin as a whiny brat, Padme Amidalas portrait as a naive little bitch and the incredibly forced romance between them. Anakin was a stalking creep and every Woman with at least a little bit of Brain would never be in a relationship with such a guy. thes are points, that schould have been altered, but in a whole bigger Picture (sidecharakters likt Darth Maul, Emperor Palpatine, Count Doku, most of the other Jedis) it has made the star wars universe much more complex and I like that.

I read "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" when it came out, it was, and still is, a decent book. Yes , it's typical, young reader, adventure pulp, from around 1978, but it has a good story through-line, nice suspense, and a couple of decent thrills. Alan Dean Foster has always written a decent story, and this is typical of his work.

I still have the original book of this. Luke was conflicted over his desire for Leia but deep down thought he was unworthy because he was just a farmer boy and Leia was a princess. Meanwhile, Leia was still carrying the emotional scars of her interrogation back on the Death Star and suffering from flashbacks, something that Vader exploited when they came to the final fight. Overall it wasn't bad, helped tide me over while I waited for Empire to come out.

Can I just say this video is fantastic? The editing in several ways -- lining up with the narrators, the pictures, the animated comic bits, the little bonus things like music and movie clips added for more comedic effect. Speaking of comedic effect, the timing is flawless. The talk about the book is hilarious by itself, but adding all these other nifty parts makes it so freaking perfect.

Unfortunately I'm old enough to have read the book in 1978, I also heard that filming had started on this script but was lost to a studio fire, good to hear this being talked about nearly 40 years later, keep these up, so entertaining

Look, it's not terrible, but it's not that good either. That said, given it's supposed to be an 80s low budget movie concept, I think it makes great fan film adaptation potential. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if there's already a fanfilm or two adapting this story idea, it seems totally doable on a backyard budget. All you really need is after effects, a few actors, some costumes (which in the 80s were just thrown together with what they had, I mean Luke's lightsaber is literally a camera flash) and some locations to shoot at.

I respectfully disagree. I read the book, hot off the tails of some great EU novels, and was amazed by how boring, tame and out-of-character it was. I struggled to finish the thing, and only did so cause I used to never leave a book unfinished.

I read the print book (never knew about the comic) when it first was published (I was in the seventh grade), and a couple more times over the years. Also the Han Solo and Lando Calrissian books. Not great literature by any stretch, but for you have to compare them to the state of sci-fi of the time. The most intelligent sci-fi show produced in the 70s was Space:1999 (only the first season, and that had a really hokey premise). Even by the late 70s, Star Trek was only just starting to gain traction in the minds of studio execs owing its endurance in reruns and conventions and the surprise success of Star Wars. Nobody could imagine making sci-fi TV aimed at adults. Try choking down the original "Battlestar Galactica" or the Gil Gerard "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century". Try looking up "Quark" or "Logan's Run" sometime. Movies weren't in much better shape. "Blade Runner" and "The Terminator" were years in the future. Books were about the only place where you could find a good story. Frankly, I liked "Splinter" for the same reason Empire is my favorite SW movie. It was gritty and mean, and victory was pyrrhic at best. Just a little piece of a war. In short, a decent story with characters I liked. Before it turned out the galaxy was wrecked because of one dysfunctional family.

70s sci-fi was often existential and/or dystopian. "Logan's Run" is the perfect example of this. "Silent Running" and "Colossus the Forbin Project" are two other excellent films of thr period. "Star Wars" changed sci fi forever and the genre would never be the same. I actually like Logan's Run and Colussus.
@murasaki848
@murasaki848 3 жыл бұрын
@@JadisAmalthea I must admit on hindsight I probably shouldn't be too hard on Logan's Run. I found the storytelling a bit disjointed, true, but in fairness it was a good satire for the time on about a hedonist dystopia and on the increasingly prevalent youth worship that we see IRL even today. As I said, due to the treatment science fiction got back then as well as the overall state of production values in film in general it was hard to give stories the exacting treatment they get nowadays. There was no digital steadicam to take that perfect shot with instantaneous review by the director to see if it worked (the shot that first got me thinking about this was in Stargate SG1, where some monster of a cameraman got an amazing continuous shot walking backwards up a spiral staircase and around a boardroom table all while perfectly framing the characters that were in exposition). All they had were big, bulky cams on tracks, morning rushes to review the previous day, and budgets on most movies that couldn't afford a lot of expensive days of reshoots on expensive silver on sets in movie lots where space was still at a premium. Then there's the executives to please, many of whom are the type that felt Star Trek TOS was too 'cerebral' for any viewing audience to understand and felt controversy other than skimpy female costumes ran counter to profit. I will have to take your (implied) advice and watch Colossus: The Forbin Project. I've never heard of it or the novel it was based on. Thanks. :)

Oi, I read Splinter a loooong time ago. The novel was so boring, and nonsensical. I'm glad, it didn't made it to a movie... Actually I'm wondering how it could even make it it to a comic. (Well, considering, that Lucas' original script made was made into a comic, I shouldn't be suprised... but... nah. Splinter should just be forgotten.)

But the fact that it was personally commissioned by George Lucas as a successor novel and possible film sequel gives it a certain legitimacy. Before Disney slapped us all in the face by demoting the entire Expanded Universe to the status of legend, "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" was considered canon, taking place chronologically between Episodes IV and V (so "Splinter..." and Episode V are not mutually exclusive as sequels to Episode IV, although the latter is clearly the superior of the two with respect to both quality and overall importance). The rather flippant and dismissive reading these guys give of the story in this video does not do it justice. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I really enjoyed reading the original novel from 1978, and the comic book adaptation done two decades later by Dark Horse was excellent, having successfully provided a visual representation of the story that perfectly realized how I had always imagined and expected it would appear.
