I meant to say 1980. She left Motown by the early 80s but would come back later.

I know you only have so much time for details but reducing Flo to the fat drunk feels wrong. Especially since it wasn't that simple
@aisletell Жыл бұрын
I'll go more into The Supremes story because a lot of their love stories were interwoven with their professional stories so Flo will get her due then

Yes, the work she is doing here is so needed and appreciated, and I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Florence Ballard reference. Read Mary Wilson's autobio Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme--yes, the broadway show is loosely based on that text. As a matter of fact, after the opening on broadway, Mary Wilson went backstage and asked the playwright "How did you know?? How did you know??" Wilson integrates Ballard's biography within her text. It is heart=rending. Florence had been sexually assaulted, and there was no place for her to go to help her manage the shame and humiliation she experience; so she drank and gained so much weight. Plus it was Florence Ballard that founded the Primettes along with Mary Wilson and Betty McGlown. Diane Ross came later, and Barry christened her Diana, after the Greek goddess. Barry promised that solo parts would rotate between each "girl" but broke that promise in favor of Diane bc her voice would attract the mainstream, and Barry craved that audience. Flo sounded like Aretha Franklin, and Barry said the industry already had its Aretha. Diana and Barry treated Flo horribly--embarrassing her at parties and constantly putting her on blast about her weight. When Gordy let her go Ballard had to sign a document indicating that she could not mention in any of her publicity that she she was a former Supreme--EVER.

Well being drunk, turning up late for rehearsals, gaining weigh and unable to fit in the gowns, and cussing out the man that writes the checks gets you fired. Her behavior was beginning to threaten the group's success. I ain't with this whole Flo as victim crap. She threw it all a way because of her jealously...the only one responsible for Flo's life was Flo.
@Maatization Жыл бұрын
@@diva4tv Flo never sounded like Aretha. You must not have heard her sing. She was no Jennifer Holiday. I was 12 yrs old in 1964 and have followed them ever since. This whole Flo as the eternal victim just started after Dreamgirls. Mary used Flo's death as a career opportunity. In every interview and TV appearance she pushed the narrative of Flo being the best singer and took every opportunity to stab Diana in the back.(mostly because she didn't have much else but playing on the emotions people felt for Flo and Diana)..and succeeded in almost destroying Diana's career with her book.People love to hate Diana but the woman keeps on winning and millions around the world love her...And you are lying about Diana and Berry disrespecting Flo at parties. Diana was the only one that helped Flo. Mary didn't and she promised Flo's kids a share of the profit she made from her tell all...and never gave them a crust of bread. Flo was hardheaded and didn't know how to handle showBUSINESS....

@@MaatizationAgain never said anything about her being a victim. Yall really be projecting

Wrong Al Green, my lady. He was a nightclub owner in detroit well before that Al Green whose photo you displayed, but carry on, I;m enjoying it. Also, that's not a good excuse to talk about a book you did not read and appear to assume something about it that you don't know. You need to get Raynoma's book because you will learn a lot that is 180 degrees different from what you assume you know about it. On the contrary, Berry's book that came out after hers needed to come forth to explain his conduct. However, it was pretty flimsy and weak, and not as hard hitting as hers with all of the documentation she had to back hers up. Read her book Berry, Me and Motown it will give you some balance in your dissertation.
