Anyone who's ever been on a long deployment in the navy understands what those guys are going through. Hours of monotony, moments of terror, supply problems, system failures, days blending into one another until you lose all concept of time passage.

I think this reviewer missed the point of this film. It is a parody of all of the sci-f movies that depict space travel as non-stop adventure and intrigue. This movie says that deep space travel can be extremely dull and make you go nuts. These four guys are bored to death of their jobs. Between planet bombings they have nothing to do and have long past found ways to stay entertained. The ship’s computer plays Muzak that drives them crazy. Doolittle pretends to make music on a water bottle contraption, Boiler smokes, constantly clips his beard and plays with a pocketknife, Pinback reads pulp comics, makes a video diary and tries to get laughs with his toys and Talby sits around and looks at the stars. It’s really a movie about nothing - like Seinfeld - and is a lot of fun.

It immediately became my favorite sci/fi film when I first saw it and decades later nothing has ever replaced it...in my mind. Wild, goofy, intelectual probing....and, so much more...just plain fun...That is, of course, unless you're an intelectual bomb with a degree in evolutionary causal dynamics, which, and more than anything else, wants to debate the validity of end time situational dynamics !

Dan O'Bannon who stars in this film also was the co writer and edited the film. I say this because this gave him the inspiration to write Alien Yes A L I E N.

Unexpectedly, Alan Dean Foster did a novelization of the movie as well which was a little unusual since normally those would be done for a bit bigger movies.

This ranks among my all time favorites, currently #3. The Third Man recently upset Casablanca for first. It's a grunge take on 2001 a Space Odyssey and predates Star Wars. Close collaborator Dan O'Bannon went on to write Alien. If we can't make them laugh, we'll make them scream

Back when I was kid in the 80's and early 90's USA network used to play b horror and sci fi movies. This looks like something they would have played back than.

I was only ten years old when this was released and I didn't see it back then. I first saw it in the 1990s and I thought it was a fun parody of what seemed to be slacker hippies in space. I've bought a few small telescopes over the years and observed the moon and nearby planets but this spring I bought a Seestar S50 and now I can easily find and photograph nebulae. So when I re-watched this movie two days ago it was fun to recognize some popular nebulae pictured in the film (Orion nebula in opening credits, Eagle nebula in opening credits, Pleiades star cluster at 22 minutes, Veil nebula mentioned but not shown).

Has anyone noticed the mysterious smiling face ?? I noticed it years ago when watching it on video 😃 when they enter the electrical storm and the bomb is activated, watch the computer room screen and for a millisecond a smiling face flashes up. It takes some doing to pause it at the right moment. I've always wondered who it is. Maybe the director.

I love John Carpenter this is one I have never seen, certainly interested in checking it out. It'd be cool if you could recommend the best versions of the movie to check out,...like does a NA bluray even exist for this film? Guess I'll go to ebay and roll the dice.

xRAxK It looks like there is a Bluray edition out there, but I've never watched it personally to vouch for its quality. Dark Star - Thermostellar Edition (Blu-ray) www.amazon.com/dp/B008SGMPVU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JVZYybYAK6VJD I've only seen the DVD "Hyperdrive" edition, but was satisfied with that version.

I'm gonna' be "that guy" and correct a few points. the beachball critter was not an intruder, but a lifeform they deliberately picked up to become the ship's mascot. Pinback was the one who insisted they do so, but like a petulant child, he doesn't want to handle the responsibility of caring for it. Not mentioned in the review, this was John Carpenter's theatrical directorial debut, though it didn't start that way. The film began as a "student project" at USC, the team worked upon the "movie" in sporadic spurts over the course of 2 years and was originally shot on 16mm film, running roughly 45 minutes. in 1973 additional material was filmed to extend it long enough for a theatrical release. Added scenes included everything involving the "mascot", the corridor scenes involving tanning and target practices, the beer bottle rhapsody, and scenes involving the the crew sleeping. Funny enough, when came time for actual national distribution, some material was cut. A final anecdote, O'Bannon, upon seeing audience less than impressed with the "critter" scenes, which he meant to be comedic, said, "If I can't make them laugh, then maybe I can make them scream." Which inspired him to develop an outline that would evolve into "ALIEN".

It was the 1970's, no KZbin, Tic Toc or Twitter back then, collage was practically free as compared to today and cable television was just a new concept. Oh, and other than dicey UHF cannels the average number of VHF television channels was only seven and they would go off the air very early in the morning for a few hours. It was a very different time, a very different people and almost everyone would read the newspaper everyday twice.

Hey Jay, I also finally got a movie editor to play around with and the first thing I did was string a bunch of clips together and put a music track over it. Check it out on my channel and I bet you know most of the movies on it.

Wow. Good job, Farva. You read someone's advertisement spiel from a magazine or something and didn't even credit the source. What is crystal clear is that you've never watched this movie, or this is not how you would describe it.
