As a programmer myself, I could say RAM > Chipset, M1 is enough but RAM often got clogged in the 8GB variant, even with swap memory (and it kills your storage faster). Microsoft teams + slack already eats most of the RAM, and it is a disaster when I start running docker.

Yup. I agree. Now with more AI-driven tasks being built into the OS, it seems like the RAM will be utilized more. 8GB will probably do the tasks, but it's going to slow things down I would imagine. It really is. At their price, it should have 16gb period. Because of it, you get a very expensive device for basic tasks. RAM is NOT expensive ,Apple is just being greedy because it has this image of being"premium" on things that aren't even luxury products. I almost made the mistake of buying the MB air base model and thank god i didn't. Any light editing is really slow on it, it gets completely overshadowed by similar priced windows device. And i said light editing because the MB air is clearly not fit for heavy workload. But on a 1000-1200€ device, i should be able to use this for very light editing tasks without getting outperformed by Windows device.

Yes, swap uses disk RAM, which is usually DDR4. Only on occasions will swap trespass onto flash memory, so as you say, the swap issue is a misnomer. Many with an anti-Apple agenda push it out, and it is never supported-just scaremongering.

@@justahugenerd1278I work in IT/Cyber and currently trying to decide between 14" M3 Pro vs 15" M3 Air so your comment is very interesting to me. How do you think these 2 compare when it comes to running VM's? Would you say that I would regret the Air model even though it seems to be so close in performance?

I would be upgrading the Air model to have 16GB memory so idk how to compare the specs between it and the MBP 18GB memory when it comes to VM's

Thank you for this, the review I needed - juggling between Air M3 vs Book M3 Pro (both 16gb) and this has helped my decision (Book M3 Pro). All my current needs are met by Air M3, but need to future-proof, and the M3 Pro just has that. This was a very refreshing review - so many show tests re Geekbench, Cine-something...I mean, I'm a normal bloke, I don't get all that!

One benefit of the 16gb is being able to run Windows 11 better than most intel Windows laptops.. I had the M1 with 8gb and ran Parallels/Windows 11 and it worked pretty darn well but with the M3 and the 16gb it's like I have 2 laptops in one and it benchmarks faster than some of the newest mid tier Windows laptops. I'm a somewhat recent new Macbook user so it's nice to have Windows as a backup if there's something not available on Mac.

Everyone says you might aswell go for the pro, disregarding that the entry pro screen is only 14, which from personal experience is irritating for video editing, photoshop etc...

The M3 Air is great for most people doing general things on their laptop. It is also good for light photo/video editing and low CPU intensive work (data analysis, spreadsheets, Word documents). Anything CPU & GPU intensive for a job or hobby, the M3 Pro MacBook Pro is the obvious choice if there are not OS limitations. Also, good for games that are available on MacOS. CPU & GPU intensive work are: News organization video editing, wedding photography, DJ, sound engineer, software engineer using Java, or civil engineer using AutoCAD.

I have a Macbook Air M2 and it is nice, but an opportunity came along to get a Macbook Pro M1 Max and it did. The MacBook Pro is so much better the screen especially, the built-in speakers are great for a laptop and of course the performance. The only thing the Macbook Air M2 has that is nice in comparision it is light weight and that's it. The screen on the MacBook Pro is definitely worth the extra money.

The Air 15 goes on sale often and has 10 cores compared to the 13 MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.. to get a larger screen than the 15 you have to spend 2500 for a 16’ pro

It's not all about the money, weight means more to some people, I"m never going to use my laptop outside, never, I love the lightness of the Air over the Pros, even the 14" and the 14" screen is great, only if you sit an Air next to it, on it's own the Air's screen is perfect for the money

Just sold the 13 Pro for the 15 air. Specs aren't everything, and 8GB is just fine even if you do some video editing.

I bought a MacBook Air M3 15“ 8/256. It does his Job for what it is built for: Beeing John Malcovic, no beeing a Laptop. But my Desktop-Computer is a DIY-Windows Machine with Intel i913900 and 64 GB RAM 31“ HP-Z-Display. Super Silent Noctua Fans…. Greetz from Switzerland.

the situación is that if you are look for a bigger screen on the air go with the 15inch but then if you arre preferring a 14" MacBook Pro then you are not looking for a bigger screen anymore and you can go with the 13 inch

The heaviest work I want a Macbook Air for is still photo editing (NO video editing) when travelling. Will a refurbed M3 be better than the M2? If I understand correctly If I'm not multi tasking heavy work loads paying more for the M3 may not be worth any noticeable difference.

People I do programming on m1 Mac Air 15 inch. 16gb is perfect, don't buy into these new perfomance related traps unless you work with heavy rendering... Modern chips are capable of billions of computing power, only storage and RAM is the problem...

Basically you want to upgrade from the base model to 16gb and 512 gb. Then you realize you can get a smaller screen pro for a bit more.

I’ve got an M1 MacBook Air and probably gonna upgrade it to either the M2 or M3 15” Air next, have no need for any pro models tbh.

You've commented on the negatives of not having a fan. I have twins - I have to buy 2 - so reliability is huge for me. The ribbon cables inside macs are notorious for not behaving well in dusty environments and in my experience, not having holes in the chassis and fans tends to stop ingress of foreign particles such as dust. I bought M1 with twice the ram and twice the SSD - swapping should not be a problem at all. And then the ssdran much faster - 35% approx. Is the m3 worth $400 more than the M1? Not to me but then again the same spec isn't available to me at the moment, The M1 was the best value ever.

for the best bang of your bucks, definitely buy the lower CPU version but upgrade both RAM and Storage, it performs better than newer CPU with basic RAM and Storage, the rest of the features have workaround. Wifi 6E, which app need internet speed faster than Wifi 6 ? better microphone, always use mobile for private chat, and headset's microphone for group chat. dual display, upgrade to bigger and wider screen monitor if needed in the future. perform well under low power, use power plug or powerbank.

These aren't intel chips.
@akin2420025 ай бұрын
@@Sakuyushi Intel chips have nothing to do with it. It's the RAM speed and space. DDR5 RAM laptops from Intel, Ryzen, or Snapdragon are getting between 4800 to 8400 mhz speed. MacBooks with the M chip are getting around 6400 mhz speed. In regards to space, 32GB is still 32GB of space. It doesn't matter if your RAM speed is blazing fast. If you need more than 8GB of RAM, you will need more than 8GB by swap memory or buying more RAM.
