This era of Caddies was probably the most tallented horn section to ever grace a ska band, the solos on the albums were legit jazz, and live were usually even more crazy. I remember watching their trumpet player, obviously blitzed on mushrooms or some other hallucinogen, wad up his ballcap for a makeshift wah and unleash rag-time hell... even a crowd of ignorant punks all knew we were watching somthing special.
@guitarfosecАй бұрын
Saw them at Warped Tour '98. I was 14 and that was my first big concert like that. I had heard some good ska/punk bands through my brother, but this was the first band I saw live that made me an instant fan. Got Duck and Cover for Christmas that year and never looked back. Such a good live show. Also, these guys were barely out of high school when they recorded this stuff, which always blows my mind.

I dragged my wife to a mad caddies show about 12 years ago and she wasn’t happy about going to another “punk” show. After the show she said it was her favorite concert ever and has loved the mad caddies ever since. Great band!!!
@skatchina2 ай бұрын
did the same with my brother, who isn't really into music, especially not into ska-punk. And he really enjoyed it. (gladly, cause I felt bad to bring him there, as he was the driver.)
@alejandroramirez44702 ай бұрын
@@skatchina I like ska, although my older brother is more obsessed than I am. I'd gladly go see these guys. He likes many upcoming bands though, so some shows last about 4 hours unless we agree to some festival. The time we tried to see aquabats we left after their opener, "left alone," because security thought he purposely tried bumping into someone not in the pit and therefore he wasn't allowed back on the floor.

Arguably the most stylistically versatile ska band. Polka, pirate shanty, ska punk, dixie, mellow ska... Those guys can do it all. They also happen to be the band I saw the most live shows of and my introduction to ska with that exact album. Memory Lane....

Mad Caddies were a band I grew up with courtesy of my (since departed) older brother, and I had the good fortune to look after them for a two-day festival in Australia at the end of 2023. The van the promoter supplied blew the engine and we ended up stranded the side of the highway, and a number of backline stuff had not been passed on to me or production crews, but despite everything, these absolute pros pulled together and made everything work despite all the obstacles, and treated the crew exceptionally well. Really great human beings and I'm so stoked to have been able to spend time working with them and seeing them play two days in my little town in regional Australia. 10/10, would drink beers in a broken down van roadside with again.

As a fellow trumpeter and bassist, I 100% agree with your assessment. Keith Douglas is a wizard and the best trumpet player in the ska scene. Because of him, I fell in love with the Mad Caddies. I loved them so much that I put out a Craigslist ad in college pleading for someone to hire me as their trumpet player in a ska band. Unfortunately, no one answered my ad. 😂

Cannot recommend enough the fretless bassist from a British late 70’s/early 80’s band called Japan, and the man’s name is Mick Karn. After Japan split up, Mick created and released his own solo stuff, as well as forming a short lived act with Bauhaus’s singer, Peter Murphy, called Dalis Car. Mick also did some session work with with Gary Numan, Kate Bush and Midge Ure, and probably others I’m not aware of. He also collaborated with some of the other musicians from Japan. Sadly, Mick passed away in January 2011. Obviously Mick’s solo work is where his beautiful bass lines shine (his first album ‘Titles’ 😎), but anything with him in is a joy to behold, like Japan’s ‘The Art Of Parties’. Seriously, it would be an absolute pleasure to watch and listen to your experience of this bassist 🙏

Been watching a bunch of your vids the last couple days, love that you embraced the punk and ska genres. You nailed with the the live experiences. I can tell you that live is by far the best way to consume it. It’s different every time, sometimes in a Bob Ross “happy mistake” way (sometimes opposite) but that bit of variation is what often makes this music so truly authentic to its listeners. Punk rockers are just blue collar shit heads like the rest of us and the music is our getaway. It’s not perfect, but it’s fun and we thrash around a bit. Fun times.

One of my first big live shows was Pennywise, Death by Stereo and The Mad Caddies at the house of blues in probably around 2002. That was my first exposure to The Mad Caddies and they absolutely blew me away. I'm with KZbin in regards to the recommendation at the end of the video clip. It's from a show at a German festival in 2001 when they still had their most awesome horn section and Sascha was still playing guitar for them and I was lucky enough to have been attending this show. I can't put my finger on it but it was just different back then. I guess I miss the banjo days. You certainly should check out "Mary Melody" from the albun "Rock the Plank". It also has this joyful 1/5 pokla country pattern in the bass and a crazy good whistling solo!
