The Magic Knot - The Best Way to Join Yarn in Knitting

Welcome to The Blue Mouse Knits! Today I will be showing you my absolute favorite way to join yarn in knitting. Typically you would do this with the same color yarn, but I will be demonstrating this with 2 different colors to really show what's happening. This join involves making 2 knots that slide together to create a perfect, safe and strong join for your project. It does create a small bump so it's best to be strategic in where you place it, better to join earlier than when you run out if you can place the join near your BOR, underarm or seam edge. The thinner the yarn, the more invisible the join will be. I have been using this method in all my projects for years, and I have never had a join undo in a project, it's perfect.

My favourite way to join yarn is unravelling some of the end strands of both yarns and then rubbing them together so that they join into one, knotless yarn. This works best with 100% wool or alpaca or all the types of natural materials that can be kind of felted together. I don't like knots at all, that's why I love this method. :)

This video is brilliant!! Question: My ball of yarn doesn’t seem to be eternally continuous and has factory knots. Is it ok to work with these or should I cut the yarn and tie it in you suggested way?

That’s a personal preference really, I cut and re tie them but if it feels secure then it’ll probably be fine

Yes! I use it for both all the time. The only yarns I’ve had trouble with are ones that snap super easily when pulled on, but even then I’ve just used less force when pulling the knots together. Hope that helps!

@@TheBlueMouseKnits thank you for replying. I knit 150 dishcloths as favors for our 50th anniversary 3 years ago and I have a lot of leftovers I’d like to make scrappy dishcloths from but I thought I might need to put some fabric glue on the knots. Yay! I don’t have to.
