In this episode of the Deer IQ podcast we are in our series “summer prep for fall success,” as we continue to look at how to achieve our goal, or theme of this year “to consistently take the top deer where you hunt” and exact habits and systems needed to do that. The big question for this week is how many spots do you need to get a chance at a deer you want to shoot, every time you go out? What does that look like, and is that even possible? And yes we have our free journal you can download below, that will really help you get the most out of this podcast. Ok so, here are the top things to look for during this episode.
• What is the difference between a goal, a criteria, and the measuring stick as I define it, when it comes to being a consistent hunter?
• How many times did I hunt my first year compared to last year, and what was the main reason for this difference?
• And what are the considerations you have to make when trying to figure out a number of spots you need to have, to have good opportunities every time out?
It's all in this episode of the Deer IQ podcast - listen, subscribe, share!

So I have always heard about wearing out a spot. I guess this is highly subjective as far as what is considered wearing out. I have 90 acres. Normally I have 3 ladders I move each season and 2 permanent ladders that were from previous land owner and have grown into the tree. I hang 2 lock one. In addition I hunt mobile with saddle and sticks. I find it hard to gauge if I'm affecting the area. Case in point, last season I bow hunted one lock on about 5 times between end of Sept and end of October. In November I muzzleloader hunted that stand 2 times and took a shot at a pretty good buck. I hunted gun a few times after that including day after thanksgiving and killed a mature buck. Hunted it several more times before the end of the year. I don't think I wore it out. I saw deer every time I hunted the stand. I rarely hunted 2 days in a row. I don't ever have "target bucks". I take what comes.

Thanks for sharing! From what I read it sounds like you pressured it early, but then backed off and gave it time to rebound. The 1-2 hunts measuring stick is pretty rock solid and honest about what to expect. Anything over that and you are pressuring deer and helping the neighbors.

@@adamlewis_outdoor I don't think I pressured it at all. This lock on is right off the main road I use between season end and about a month before season begins. Maybe 1 or 2 trips a month. I don't have a lot of acreage but the way my lease sits, it's bordered on all sides by other large tracks of field and woods. I know you can't be 100% stealth but the way I approach it is only on good wind and with good entry and exit strategy. Another unique thing about the track is it is basically 4 zones. I hunt the other stands sparingly..a lot less than my mobile sits.

@@cousineddiehunts no matter bro, he's trying to give you sound advice. Stop, think about it. Every successful hunter, would give you the same advice. Don't be stubborn to the point of being stupid. I did that for many years, and yeah, I got a few. But not the big boys I was looking for. I changed, and so did everything else.😊

Too funny, that's how I started hunting myself. Then look for good spot, that you thought was good, not the deer. I bet a boatload of Hunters still hunt that way. True. Took me a while to get it. More than most I guess. Oh, I got a few in between but, not what I should have been getting. Understand why you use the gut, but hopefully next year you'll change it to a different word. One year, my gut told me to get out of the blind, go up the hill, see if that big boy was still there. He wasn't. My gut told me to go down, in front of the spruce. Sat there for 5 minutes, the big boy got up, sitting with a pretty doe. Took off running, and I shot the biggest buck I've ever shot. True story. Now you know why I don't like the gut remark. I still used all my dear hunting instincts and knowledge I gained over the years. But the gut helped me to do so. Just saying😮😊. Adam, I appreciate your podcast/ vids. Putting out your history, experiences, knowledge and educational viewpoint along the way. Definitely a good thing. If people are paying attention, should save some of them from our misfortunes/lack of knowledge and/or lack of opening our eyes to the bigger picture. Later than we actually should have. Lol. Appreciate your stuff, even when I disagree with you. Lol. You're a good man McGee! 😉

We should get together and write a book! Somewhat serious!😅😂. Although I probably have too many stories, and I know you don't have the time. Ha

I appreciate your support! My point on going with your gut is that we should be trying to find out the “why” for our hunting decisions and demystify things. There is a reason.. the more we know it the more we can up our odds and avoid mistakes and replicate what works.
