I'm a Texan, listened to IZ for a long time now, thought his songs were quaint. I just returned from Hawaii. Now I have been cast under a painful, tearful spell. I can't even get back to my daily duties and thoughts. I have been somehow overwhelmed by Oahu, and I was only there a short moment in time (few days) to run a Marathon. I have been emotionally harmed by that Island. I long to go back there so badly, like no other place I've been before (seen much of the world a t 59; Japan, China, Taiwan, Korea, Europe, etc). I am a Conservative, dour, stuck in the mud boring sort. I am not moved by such people and a place, I thought. Right now I would sell everything, gather up my two dogs, and go there forever.

I thought I was the only one who weeped when leaving Hawaii. It touched my soul also and became a part of me. I felt a connection and that I was home-maybe in another lifetime. I never forget and long to return. My mind and heart weep for the loss native Hawaiians have endured and how so many destroyed the islands. A very powerful and touching song. I've recently started reading about the SONS and have been taken aback on how young they were when they established the group. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that the entire Kamakawiwo'ole family has passed away; and so young. Unfortunately, you can't control your Genetics. The churches who came to the islands came to manipulate land from our families, split up families & forever changed the Aina. Our family land was given to the Catholic Church by my grandfather (lots of it), my father & my family went back to his childhood home in 2005, only to find a childhood friend, then an old man still living on his street, who broke the news to him that the church sold his father’s land to a huge hotel development. My father cried.

In addition to: The song was first recorded in 1977 on the "Kawika Records" recording label - Hilo Hawaii _ An interesting fact about Hawaii 78 the song - The song was first titled "Hawaii 77" and produced for sale to the public available as a 45rpm record featuring the "Brother's Ioane" Mickey being the originator of the songs main verse. Unfortunately Kawika records building suffered a major fire and all copies of the known 45rpm record but one, exsist. Kawika, after searching through the rubble of the fire, miracously "one" 45rpm record was found, (For which I possess a photo of. On one side of the record is the song "Hawaii 77" on the other side is the song "The story of Peter Pumpkin" as far as I know, Kawika still has this remaining 45rpm record in his possession. For a more comprehensive understanding of the songs origin as well as How the chorus has been sung and recorded incorrectly for many years in Hawaii - See this video of Kawika in the studio explaining what transpired then and his version of how the song should be sung in respect of the incorrect versions of the chorus - kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4Kuc6B3f5tpgZI Finally: After recent talks with the once wife of "Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole" who died 1982 - Who is a witness to the birth of the Makaha Sons of Ni'iahu's recorded version circa 1978 and how the chorus was mistakenly cahnged from their version of the song - has told me Skippy would travel with a hand held cassette recorder to every show - while on the Big Island performing along with the "Brothers Ioane" he recorded the song Hawaii 77 played live and brought it back to Oahu where it was transcribed, yet when it came to the chorus, transcribed incorrectly - It is NOT "And then yet you'll find Hawaii" it IS in fact supposed to be "And then Bid Goodbye - Hawaii" - I hope these facts intrigue you enough to pass this info forward when the song is discussed by those you know. This is called pollution. Whats happening in Hawaii is happening all over the states. Housing is outrageously expensive and homelessness is on the rise.
