Thanks for all the amazing comments everyone! It's always a pleasure to return to one of my favorite series: Castlevania :) Symphony of the Night was actually the reason why I bought a Playstation at launch instead of a Saturn. In some brochure I saw the name Castlevania among a list of future releases and thought "this means I have to buy a Playstation" :) I still had to wait for more than a year before the game finally got released. Btw: the game had a really limited run here in Europe for some reason, I remember hardly seeing it on store shelves back in the day. I did manage to snatch a limited PAL edition of the game with artbook and audio cd featuring tunes from all Castlevania games up until that point which was already great by itself. The fun thing was I really didn't know what to expect from the game but was quickly blown away as I loved both Castlevania and 2D action adventure games like Wonderboy and Konami's Maze of Galious. Symphony of the Night is the PS1 game I definitely played the most and my favorite game for that console. Rondo of Blood is amazing as well but the PC-engine never got released over here, I eventually got to play it for the first time in the 2000s and loved it! My first experience with that storyline was with Dracula X for the SNES (called Vampire's Kiss here in Europe). I'm glad that port came out because it introduced me to these characters like Richter Belmont.

@@drowningin EDIT: just learned about this: If you have a PS4/PS5, check out Castlevania Requiem. It has both games together, for about $20 or so. If you only have a PS3, or an Xbox system (360/One/Series), Symphony of the Night is still available as a digital download. (Also exists physically on Xbox 360, if you can find it, as Konami Classics Volume 1.) Dracula X/Rondo of Blood is harder to find if you don't have a PS4- as far as I know, the only other way to get it is on the Turbografx-16 Mini, although I heard of a physical Turbografx CD rerelease happening soon. (I'd expect that the disc will also be playable on PC, via emulators.) It was on Wii Virtual Console, but that was shut down. There was also a PSP release of both of these games, but it changed quite a bit of stuff, like the graphics and voice acting, and it runs choppier than the original. And now that I think of it, the online store just closed down, so you'd have to buy it on eBay or something anyway.

I get the feeling we share the same exact taste when I see the CG sections looking like they're specifically designed to remind of 3D FMVs from Softimage 3D days, which they do a spectacular job of achieving and making the experience just perfect - same as the VA's incredibly professional voice and tone. At least for my tastes, there isn't a single aspect I'd ever want to change, "look more up to date" or similar arguments that could be made. I hope you'll get the support you need to keep this train running this exact same way and - if so desired - make it even bigger. An episode on Super Metroid would be incredible to see as well. Fuck I love this channel! Peerless graphical displays and research; topics I'm always interested in learning about; narration that's calming, well-written, and easy to digest. Strafefox has it all. I know the "🅰️lmighty 🅰️lgorithm" doesn't prefer channels with infrequent, high-quality, lengthy content. But I do, dammit.

Sadly there's no more Castlevania games so I'm playing blood-stained ritual of the night it's just as good

gameplay-wise, sure. Artistically-wise though, no, not by a long shot sadly. I'm hoping Bloodstained 2 improves on that.

Fitting that this era brought us the best Castlevania games of each sub genre.

I was just playing SOTN again and wondering about how it came to be. The game is a masterpiece and we are all glad, the developers pushed to make this happen... ESPECIALLY the inverted castle... Without it, the game woulda been too short... I literally spike aloud to myself not even 24 HRS ago, "how is this game sooo good?!" Thanks for the answer!

what a game. i'm grateful having grown up in the 90s and getting to experience the ps1/n64/dreamcast era when games were starting to be worked on more seriously. this game and its soundtrack will always be one of my favorites.

This truly is one of the best and most criminally underrated channels on KZbin. Thank you so much for all your hard work--and for bringing back the memories.

Out of all of the videos I've seen, this one is the only I've seen without skipping it and it's well worth the time as I am incredibly satisfied watching it.

By far the best video game channel on youtube these days... Professional and humble, not vying for clicks, delivering stellar production value and not once asking for subscription or begging for support. Kudos for the video and overall approach.

In-depth analysis in both historic and technical matters without even once mentioning the word "Metroidvania". That is some skillful writing. Bravo 👏

Amazing video, symphony of the night is my all time favorite Castlevania game, the music score is truly a masterpiece. I wonder who the guitarist was in symphony of the night.

I’ll never forget Symphony of the Night. It was released the same year as Final Fantasy VII. My friends and I debated endlessly on which was the better game. Then and now, I am still somewhere in the middle. All I know is that I was blessed with two of the greatest and most influential games of all time within one spectacular year. Thanks for the retrospective.
