I remember watching it in late 1989 on VHS and I had a bad flu. I was in a trance and couldn’t get off the couch! It was a trip and it helped take my suffering away for a while. Who else thinks that Jimmy Page was the coolest guy on the planet with that low slung cherry burst Les Paul.

@scottkasper6378 SRTS, it was all fake! Then compare Live At Leeds from 1970. One real show, one recording, no clean up in the studio for 2 years by Pete Townshend. Considered the greatest live album by the world's greatest live band.

That was a GREAT summer. I was at all 3 of these MSG shows. I used to have my ticket stubs glued to my TSRTS Album cover but alas all that is now gone and now nobody believes me. For $10 we coped the cheapest nosebleed tix available (dark blue ticket stub for upper mezzanine) for the first 2 nights but wandered around before the show started and found a small empty press box that fit 5 (it even had a table to place typewriters on) in the loge area about 10 rows up from the 25th row of the orchestra seats. We never got bothered by any ushers and spent the entire show in these GREAT "seats" for both nights. On the 3rd night I had to scalp a ticket ($15 OUCH!) and again went back to that little press box but it was occupied by a film crew so we just sat on the stairway right next to the box. Again, never bothers by anybody. Great nights to be sure BUT to be honest, the first time I saw them was in 1972 (How the west was won tour) at Nassau Coliseum and THAT show was beyond great, it was the only religious experience I ever had in my life. Thereafter I saw at least 2 shows from each of their subsequent tours through 1977 but 72 was the best show and 73 were my best seats.

I gotta say that Page ripping on the 12 string for Song remains the Same the song is freaking amazing, he just shreds it, i also love dazed and confused especially how they threw in going to San Francisco, Page is just on fire there it almost looks impossible to play that fast and that well. I saw Page/Plant in 1995 in the Boston Garden, the last show ever played there before they closed it down, Plant actually mentioned that it was going to happen and said they would give us a night to remember, they played 21 songs that night finishing with Kashmere, Plant hit and held that note in the middle. I still have the No Quarter shirt that I bought that night. My ex wife and I had one of the best outings of our whole marriage that night, we were right beside Page just above the stage.

John Paul Jones wore different outfits during the film. The producers told them to wear the same thing all three nights, but he and Jimmy Page wore different outfits. I never knew about them redoing part of the movie on a soundstage, that's a new one for me. Still one of the best concert movies ever made.

With repeated viewings I did notice that some things just seem off somehow. Then info like you gave here started to come out. That didn't bother me - it's a movie, after all... I had already known for awhile that at least parts of the music on live albums is fixed up more often than not. In person I saw them on '77 tour at the end of May in Maryland, just outside of DC. Somewhat erratic overall, but I was such Zep Head that didn't really bother me. For both the movie and the live show I saw, I was just loving the fact that it was Zeppelin live.

The main reason it needed to be reshot, is that the initial filming was done in 16 mm. When the director started to look over the footage, it was grainy and looked bad. He wanted to edit using 35 mm film, but in order to make things work they had to refilm some of the concert footage. The audience shots are 16mm

A great youthful memory that defies any shortcomings of the performance or filming. Meanwhile I've probably played the album a hundred or more times, especially sides 2 & 3, later had it on CD and finally the 2007 30th Anniversary re-issue of the actual soundtrack and DVD.

I will never forget the day I saw The Song Remains during its original theatrical release at a theater that had been equipped with a special, loud, sound system provided specifically for this movie. (This was long before Dolby theatre sound and the like.) I was too young at the time to go to a concert, and Rock music videos were not yet a thing, so I was thrilled, enthralled, and I sat through it twice. I read years ago an interview with Page in which he explained the interstitial film segments were created because, due to a lack of coordination between the different camera operators (shooting on film stock), there were long segments of performance with audio but were not captured on film. Those new vignettes filled in the gaps. I had never heard about the recreation of performance segments, but I had wondered how they captured the close ups when no cameramen are visible on stage in the wider shots. I’m a bit disappointed now.

I always noticed Bonham wearing a bandana one moment and then it being gone the next moment, only to return a shot or two later. All during one song. I knew that they had recorded it over multiple nights, so I just assumed they had edited numerous nights. Now when I watch it I can definitely get the feel during some scenes that it's being filmed in a studio. It's still awesome though. And Zeppelin still rules! ;)

Wow, I saw the movie when it came out. I never knew this information, and it's a good editing job. I liked the whole movie. I got my chance to see Led Zeppelin at one of the last shows they ever played in America in Oakland, CA. Day on the Green July 23rd 1977.I was 13 years old.

Local theater played concert movies every Saturday night at midnight in the late 70s. This would show about every 6 months and we’d go.

Every single performance on this album is sublime and dwarfs the studio version. I can believe what I hear because... I'm hearing it. The level of artistry is unparalleled. It is the greatest live performance ever, and I can't see how it can ever be bested.

I have one question: about the audio: in the studio they played along with the live audio of MSG, or they rerecorded the audio?
@classicrockproductions
@classicrockproductions Ай бұрын
They played along to the audio from the live show. That’s why in the video Page says he remembered everything he played at MSG but his recreation wasn’t perfect. He had to make it look like he was playing to the audio from the show at the soundstage.

Bonham had put on some weight and there are some shots where Jonesey was wearing a different shirt. One would have to rewatch and rewatch this to catch this after being told what to look for. I saw Zep in 75 I like Grant yelling at the guy who alliwed unofficial tour souvenirs- but I love the concert and fantasy scenes. Thanx

I remember jpj saying that he had cut his hair so he had to wear a wig to do the extra footage but I mean honestly you could tell… the MSG footage looks good but there’s no way they would have gotten close up shots during the actual shows because page and plant would move around a lot

Many concert films and live albums are filled with overdubs, reshoots, and complete reworking of material. Do you really think on Frampton Comes alive that there were that many over-exuberant fans screaming like crazy for a musician whose albums up to that time barely sold a nickel? One of my all time live records, Judas Priests' Unleashed in the East should have been called Unleashed in the Studio. I've seen so much live concert footage where a guitar player or bass player will have their guitar change in the middle of a song, then change back. They start out with a black Les Paul, then magically switch to a red one, then back to the black guitar.

Had no idea some of it was staged. I don't like extreme closeup concert shots and always thought the film would be better if they showed more of the whole band playing together. Now I know why that didn't happen.

The scenes in the dressing room wear not in NY it was a few days earlier in Baltimore. The little Charles Manson lookalike guy getting chased and tackled by the cops was also Baltimore. The opening few seconds of Stairway with Page up close was MSG not Shepperton . I could go on and on .
