Very fortunate to grow up in Adelaide AUS...during that amazing era...Seeing us at the start etc. I remember playing cricket at the southern foothills, elevated able to look over the whole city on Sarturday mornings. You could hear these beasts in November all throughout the city. Its was amazing. That 1992 race was a shame as Senna went into the back of Mansell in the lead....What an era. I was standing at the inside corner Shuie hit Damnon a couple years later. For the whole start of the race...but left a couple laps before...You were able to get so close then on that circuit :) Have to love YT for being able to see all this stuff :) Thanks :)

When I was 11 I saw my first F1 race on TV, the car that struck me the most was this one. Ever since, I am a Williams fan and proud of it!

@trsc27 By mid 1991 it was clear Williams had the best car (if not the most reliable) when they won 4 straight wins, and actually led the Constructors Championship for a brief moment. In 1992 the all dominant Williams FW14B was released. At this time McLaren were using the powerful Honda V12, and Senna had won the last 3 out of 4 championships. At the start of 1992 Mansell won the first 5 races. He took a record 14 poles (still the record) and won 9 races (then an all time record).

F1 is the pinnacle really

@trsc27 True. McLaren learned that in 2005. So did Lotus in 1967, 1977, 1985 (although Senna may have made it look faster than it actually was) Ferrari in 1974. Renault in 1982 (very fast, but far from reliable) A whole heap of other cars that had the pace but not the reliability. Jackie Stewart once said:"To win a race you first need to finish it." Alain Prost used to great extent in the turbo era, whereas Senna was more about raw speed at any moment. Wish I had seen that era.

@trsc27 In 1992 McLaren-Honda were still competitive, compared to the rest, but not compared to Williams-Renault FW14B. So Honda saw which way it was going and pulled out of the sport. This meant McLaren was suddenly in a situation it didn't have an engine for 1993, and had no other option than the customer Cosworth V8 (Benetton used their top engine). In 1993 the Lamborghini engine was tested, and it would have been funded by Chrysler (possibly renamed that too) Peugeot got the nod for '94.

@trsc27 Interesting, I didn't know that. I've read somewhere that the immense power of the Honda V12 at the end of 1992 made the McLaren appear competitive on circuits with long straights. Ironically enough the 1993 MP4/8 could have won the title if it had a better engine. So had Honda developed a new V10 for 1993... Honda made a car of their own in 2000 too, but since Harvey Postlethwaite died, they scratched that plan and simply powered BAR. They were only ever really competitive in 2004.

@trsc27 Cool, didn't know that. I suppose that's the reason Honda never built the engine for the McLaren F1 roadcar? When Gordon Murray was planning it he asked Honda to build the V12 to his specs, but they told him the couldn't, so he asked BMW instead, which he had experience with from his Brabham days. So if Honda were concentrating on their own F1 car, wasting resources to build a roadcar engine for a car which wasn't even all Honda was unthinkable for them. Any other reason?

The Williams FW14 was the car that ended McLaren's and Senna's dominance of the sport. That makes it a very important and good car. It ushered in the era of "Williams dominated 90's"

actually the Fw-14 was driven in 1992 by nigell man sell and riccardo patrese, not by prost and hill. Prost and hill drove together in 1993 in tude Williams FW-15
