I lived in West Hollywood for 8 years starting in 1970, and my dad and i were in the music business, so I am fascinated to see where the Mamas and the Papas lived...not to mention their session work at United Western. I really knew very little about Lou Adler up to this point. I remember at one point being obsessed with that first mamas and papas album, but I've not revisited their work in 50 years. Until now. I am more and more impressed with your films as I view and savor each one. The tone and tempo you've got going there are spot on.

Love their debut as well as their 3rd one 'Delivery" but i'm a fan of almost all of their studio albums one way or another.

The 2nd album self titled would be great to analyze they brought in a different female vocalist to replace Michelle but didn't credit her. Amazing songs on that LP.

Jill Gibson sings on most of the album

They've got some good hits in my opinion, but I agree that the albums have filler, but the talent is beyond incredible. California dreaming, twelve thirty, Monday monday, andni saw her again are classics.

Fact Check; $1,500 in 1965 is roughly equivalent to $15,000 in 2024

Band imploded due to sexual trysts, drug addiction & inflated egos.

california dreaming is the best song of the sixtys, it defined the hippy movement that was in full swing. Also in the 60's california was the place to be unlike today.

The group regressed. Each subsequent album was inferior to its predecessor. Eyes And Ears > Mamas And Papas > Deliver > Papas And Mamas > People Like Us.

I agree that the three later albums declined in quality, but the second album is, in my opinion, just as strong of an album as the first

@@jimbailey5681 Reasonable minds will differ. Drug consumption increased, quality decreased, from my perspective.

The songwriting was just as strong on album too (I Saw Her Again, Words of Love, Even If I Could, No Salt On Her Tail, Strange Young Girls, and Once Was A Time I Thought are especially great). Yes, the album was recorded under unusual circumstances, but the end product features strong performances by The Wrecking Crew and fantastic vocal performances from Denny, Cass, John, Jill Gibson, and Michelle on four tracks.

@@jimbailey5681 I thought all the Jill Gibson stuff was deleted and that Michelle re-recorded her parts. Can you point me to information that says otherwise?

The band breaking up over an affair seems a bit ridiculous.
@beckymotley13435 ай бұрын
It was more than just the affair that led to the bands breakup. John and Cass were almost like oil and water! They butted heads a lot. John pushed Cass’s voice so hard that she could have ruined her vocal cords! Plus I think John Had a big ego problem because Cass was the fan favorite of the group and he didn’t like that! Another thing that I think happened was that they were such an overnight sensation that the instant fame and money tore them apart! They could never agree or work together
