The Berlin FIDE Grand Prix is the 16-player first of three legs of the 24-player 2022 FIDE Grand Prix that qualifies two players to the Candidates Tournament. Each player competes in two of the three tournaments, with the 16 players divided into four groups who play a double round-robin. The group winners advance to a knockout. Tiebreaks at any stage are played on the following day. Players can earn a maximum of 13 points for winning a leg.
Players receive 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one. In case of a tie a 15+10 two-game match is played. If still tied, a 3+2 two-game match follows and then, if needed, an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. If more than two players are tied a round-robin tiebreak is played. Official website: worldchess.com

Just wanted to say here that my chess has become so much better, and of late, much more dynamic in my attacking style because of your videos and breakdowns. There are many games where I'm winning and can easily close out, but then I hear your voice in my head say "yes you could play that, but that's a butcher's move, and not one in the style of the great attacker [insert Morphy, Fisher, Dubov, Magnus, etc etc]" and that challenge of creating games with some flare has made chess that much more enjoyable for me. So thank you for that!

This reminds me of something TheWarOwl talked about when learning to play the violin. He'd start out playing a piece slower than normal, then he'd play it at normal speed, then he'd play it faster until he could play it perfectly at twice the normal speed. After that, playing it at normal speed was trivial.

i'm gonna say that this is the strongest group in my opinion .. Grischuk isn't in his best form but crushing him like that is something impressive .. as he's a master of the king's indian Def .. also Esipenko is gonna be a top 10 very soon and Hikaru just won with a great tactic . Hikaru has a big chance to go to the candidates .. but it's gonna be so hard with Levon and So playing incredibly well

Averbakh system ? As I was taught and as I play OTB this line as White : it is Bg5 (not directly Be3). The main idea for White is that White can long castle or short castle. It is also hindering Black e5 previously. The dark square bishop goes to e3 after h6 attacking bishop in g5.

10:16 can someone explain why Rh6 isn’t a good move here? I’m not a chess whiz so I’m sure there’s an explanation, I just can’t see it. To me it seems like it would end up with white up a pawn, but probably still playable for black? Thanks!

@@alternateimmaster2213 Well, this is kind of a can of worms, but I think it is interesting to clear up the difference as I see it. Most Magnus fans seem to be a fan of 'the current best player', not necessarily fans of Magnus, per se. While Hikaru fans seem to be more fans of his style of personality within the chess world. Seems to be the difference between 'sports' fans and 'twitch streamer' fans. And no, I don't think one is less annoying than the other.
