My high school substitute teacher( Mr. Rodriguez, aka Mr. banning) at Banning HS, was a zoot zuiter and ww2 vet .He grew up in East los angeles. He showed us pictures and told us stories about how he and Platoon liberated the holocaust. Some are not mentioned in history books. There was an article that he endorsed called Saving private chicano. it tells short(true) stories of chicanos fighting in the war ( also not mentioned in history books). he mentioned that he and his friends used to get into with the sailors and that guy in the picture. He metioned him, and his friends drove by and saw him waiting or standing around (forgot where exactly)He pulled by him and told him to "get out of here, you're going to get beaten up" the sailor said "ill be alright. idk if he's still alive, but those stories i will always remember. I wish i had kept those articles. im sure they're out there...

I remember right after school some mexicans would call me a 'thief' and asked me the reason why I was living in Mexico and would tell me to go back to my country USA because I have stolen enough land as it is. I'm the offspring of a mixed Anglo American and Latino parents, so this hits somewhat close to home. Like many of the Chicanos, my mother's Mexican side of her family left Mexico in the wake of the Revolution. Her family ended up in Calexico, so she was not born into the East LA culture. Father's paternal side were English immigrants who came here during the post Civil War period. The history of American Whites and Mexicans in California is a very interesting one. I learned that the Californio's were moving towards becoming their own independent nation when the Americans invaded by land and sea. The American armies actually had a tougher time dealing with the Californios than they did with Santa Anna's forces in mainland Mexico. I also remembered from my middle school years, growing up in Redondo Beach, there were bitter rivalries between the surfers and the low-riders. The Low-Riders were the natural heirs to the Zoot Suit generation. Their dress may have been more casual, but some of that style remained like the high baggy pants and long shirts. The writers of the Broadway musical, West Side Story, had considered placing the story on the West Coast, featuring Zoot Suitors and White Californians, but it was scrapped in favor of Puerto Ricans vs. White teens in Manhattan. California may still become its own nation the way things are going. It will be dominated by the local Latino culture and somewhat mixed with Asians.

No justice has ever been had for those who’s lives were ruined the women and men raped beat and killed by white sailors and an apology by Los Angeles doesn’t make it better.

My dad was a WWII veteran. He told me that the sailors were granted "dungaree liberty," which mean they went out in the town with the work uniforms on, and they cleaned house.

The only ignorance, in 2023, is that white liberals will not admit that blacks and Hispanics are the biggest cause of crime in this nation.
