Obviously I expected some disagreement, but I'm honestly a little surprised still at how forcefully (heh) a lot of people are pushing back. You're perfectly free to disagree with me, but my only request would be this: I go out of my way to make clear that just because I have an opinion on something, I don't begrudge you your opinion. I'm not a guy who wants hate clicks, and I don't take contrary opinions for attention. The me you see on this channel is just that - me, sharing my honest thoughts and opinions. I'm very happy to see how much joy this episode has brought to so many people. As I said in the review, I honestly wish I could have shared in it. I disagree with the majority here, and I was aware of that - but please, I'd ask you to be respectful of my thoughts, as I am of yours. Overall, what I loved about The Mandalorian is that it had gotten me excited about Star Wars again. I was excited every week to see what would happen. And I'm still excited for what's to come. But I won't lie - much of the reaction to my opinions on this episode has put a damper on what was a very fun show/season. It's taken me back to the days of a few years ago when it seemed like every Star Wars discussion was filled with vitriol and anger. I'm perfectly prepared for disagreement, or else I wouldn't share my opinions. But being told that I'm dead inside, that I have a stick up my a**, that I hate everything, that I'm not a real Star Wars fan, that I'm not being honest or doing this for attention - it's very discouraging. I stand by my thoughts and remain excited about the future of Star Wars. I hope we can all get a little better about sharing our love and our criticisms for it with each other.

I have mixed feelings on the Luke reveal. I think I might have liked it better if it was a recast-ed role instead of cgi, but who knows. Ether way no one should be attacked for their opinion, especially on something so subjective.

Dan, don't listen to all those people! Keep being awesome and don't change! I totally get what you're saying about these reactions discouraging your interest and excitement about Star Wars. I felt the same way years ago, Force Awakens got me back to the love of Star Wars and got me reading the comics and novels and watching the animated shows, and then Last Jedi came out and I loved it! And then the discourse began... And that love of talking Star Wars and wanting more and more kind of died down again.

This just occured to me. Luke here could have been replaced by Mace Windu who just got his hands on a green lightsaber randomly. All lines could have been said by Mace with no out of context meanings. All the actions could be done by Mace as he also studies the same form of combat. Moreover, it would have taken away that uncanny feeling and gave us something to lose our mind over without feeling out of place.

You're just not addressing or maybe even listening to the nature of the criticism. "I just saw Luke this year" was not the heart of his criticism, it was punctuation.. They won't be able to "unspoil" Luke going forward regardless the technology or actors applied because we know his in-universe spoiled future awaits. This is also the base of Murrells criticism against the plotline of Luke taking Grogu - we know tragedy awaits, which is also the main, though not only, issue with the prequels and the 2 Star Wars Stories... As for the production... Luke's face didn't even move! they couldn't find the budget to give him proper dialogue and still made the choice after Leia and Grand Mof were both panned. Star Wars has decamped from a galaxy far, far away and moved permanently into Uncanny Valley. Stop encouraging Lucasfilm to give us hackneyed legacy-based stories by considering them political victories and instead give them the courage to imagine again. Look, in my head canon there are only 3 star wars movies, and The Mandolorian.. except now I may have to yank Mando out too because they've insisted on adding Disney-Luke, in 2D! If you don't the disney-fication of our world, and all the others, will proceed apace...

We have THREE ENTIRE MOVIES of young badass Luke kicking ass and taking names. Is it SO HARD to accept that heroes are flawed and that for about a 5-6 year period during Luke's older life (the time between Ben killing all Luke's other trainees and TLJ) he became disillusioned with the Jedi teachings and doubted himself too much to try again. Luke had a massive crisis of faith after a major tragedy occurred that he had a large hand in causing, which to me is very realistic and relatable. But in the end he made peace with the Force and sacrificed himself so that the next generation could continue the fight, just like Obi-Wan did before him. I do not understand how this is considered bad storytelling when it's one of the most nuanced and human arcs in the entire Star Wars universe. And considering the time period in which the Sequel trilogy is set I don't see how anyone would expect, let alone WANT, a sequence in which they CGI old man Mark Hamill into a big, flippy lightsaber duel. Did we learn NOTHING from those awful Christopher Lee/Ian McDiarmid/Samuel L. Jackson fights in the Prequels?!? 😝 Haha

The entire premise of your problems with this episode is the exact reason I feel they needed to do what they did with Luke Skywalker and Grogu. The title of the series is called "The Mandalorian", NOT "The Child". Grogu really needs to take a long break from the show. As you yourself admitted to, he has pretty much taken over the show-- which I feel was in no way the direction Joe Favreau wanted the show to go. So yes, I feel the best way to remove Grogu from the equation for a while was with bigger star power in Luke Skywalker. I hope Grogu doesn't make a return for next season at least and let Din have some adventures of his own and let the character breathe and get a chance to shine in his own right.

My sentiments too. I was excited to see Luke appear in that episode. I thought it made sense in the story at the same time giving a fan service. The series chronicled the adventures of the mandalorian in which he meets a lot of interesting characters--good and bad--along the way. Luke, to me, is just one of them. Perhaps I'm not one to overthink things (or I'm just naive?) but I never thought nor felt that the season-ender made it imperative that Luke be a prominent/regular/semi-regular character in the series moving forward.

You're making a pretty unsustainable leap of reasoning here, Dan. You're assuming that because Jedi Temple 2.0 was destroyed that Grogu must have been a part of it. That's completely unfounded. We know the Temple is destroyed when Kylo is a teen, which is still years away. We also know that Grogu was trained during the Clone Wars. He might not need much training at all from Luke. Ahsoka already said he had closed off his abilities as a defense mechanism, he might just need some Force Therapy and he's good to go. We also know literally nothing about his species or their development. He could go through some weird development stage and enter adulthood during the offseason, there is no way to predict where they are going with this.

Dan, I respect your opinion on the finale. Though I would just say that the issue you have with the finale, in the grand scheme of things, was literally 5 minutes of the show. We probably will never see him again. The show is about the Mandalorian, and we will probably get back to the expanding of the galaxy (the worlds and characters) and his own adventures next season. This was just a way to have Grogu leave and train until they eventually bring him back at the end of the show as a fully trained, older Jedi. So I wouldn’t worry about the long term implications of this one scene. I honestly don’t think it’s going to hurt the show in any way moving forward

But this moment should have been about Grogu and Din saying goodbye and its completely overshadowed by Luke Skywalker. When Force Awakens opened, Michael Arndt (the original writer of TFA) had this to say about his version: “It just felt like every time Luke came in and entered the movie, he just took it over,” Arndt continued. “Suddenly you didn’t care about your main character anymore because, ‘Oh f-k, Luke Skywalker’s here. I want to see what he’s going to do.’”

@@MJ-io2dt I agree, the relationship between Din and Grogu is the soul of the show. Which is why I believe Grogu will come back and find him. In the end, I believe that Grogu will leave the Jedi Temple because his attachment and love for Din is too strong to allow him to become an actual Jedi. But before we even knew that Grogu was in the show, the show was already incredible and a great new Star Wars show. That’s why I feel the appearance of this one familiar character won’t ruin the show, and why the show will be able to continue on strong for a couple more seasons without Grogu. I think Mandalorian will continue in the Mandalorian mythos with going back to their home world, fight over the Dark Saber. Yeah, I think if they intended Luke to be part of the story moving forward, they would have re-cast him. As others have said, there's like 25-30 years until Kylo comes into play. Getting all hyped up about that seems a little presumptuous. I also have a problem with people being all excited about these extended universe characters and then saying that they can't use characters from the Skywalker saga. Either have ALL the previous materials available or none. Not using Skywalker characters is like when you work with your spouse and purposely ignore them or treat them like crap to avoid the accusation of playing favorites. You draw more attention to them than if you just treat them like everyone else and move on. And I get it, a lot of fans are into all the previous materials, but a lot of people watching this are not. To those that are not, The Mandalorian has introduced dozens of new-to-them characters that haven't been fleshed out. Yes, they've done an excellent job of introducing them in a way that's easy to understand, but do we really need another brand-new character? One that has enough power to rival Luke? And we haven't heard about at all? I'm sorry that Dan is disappointed to see Luke, but really? Luke makes so much more sense than having to create a new character, then having to give them a backstory, then having to explain what happened to this character by the time the sequel trilogy rolls around. Using Luke was the perfect way to relegate Grogu to the background and re-focus on Mando's stories.
