This recent evolution of Mandela Catalogue feels, to me, like the FMV point and click games of the 90s/00s like Harvester, The 7th Guest, Phantasmagoria, etc. And I mean that in the BEST way. In the same way that analog horror creates some of its feel from the anachronism of the medium/style and the tone, I feel like this new format is even better than analog horror at creating these feelings of terror and horror. If I were going to actually give it a name I'd just call it "post-analog horror," because there's really not a proper genre name for this yet, in the same way that there wasn't one for analog horror a few years ago. The new style is INCREDIBLE. People decrying that it's not analog horror are the same people who tilt their noses at art galleries and breathe deep over their own gaseous expulsions, rather than actually saying anything meaningful. Awesome stuff from Kister.

Just clarifying something: Alternate Gabriel IS O'Brien. They share a voice actor and, when Gabriel is mid-rant, Dave Lee quietly whispers "O'Brien?" So it's not an introduction of a new character, more an indication that "Gabriel" has been playing this game for a _very_ long time.

I think its also worth stating that we shouldnt take anything Gabriel said as the truth just yet from volume 4. Its very possible the words he said were to only reflect Dave's greatest fears. O'Brien was likely just step one, to establish trust and a confidant that could be used to pull the rug out from under Dave and leave him more receptive to hearing his greatest fears. Why? Because it seems like unlike other alternates, Gabriel can just flip a kill switch on you if you succumbed to his words of dispair in your heart. He did this to both Jonah & Dave.

I think the reason that Lt. Davis is so young is that no one in their right mind was willing to take the police lieutenant job in Mandela County, so a rookie cop manage to get it. And the reason he's gone for the "emo" look after his self-exile is because the alternate that attacked him is walking around in the form of "Lieutenant Davis".

The ‘Ruth thing in the closet’ scene was my absolute favorite. The CG doesn’t really seem to affect me, but I think the tangibility of seeing something in your room, the place that should be safe enough to sleep in, thinking it could be a trick of the eyes only for it to shift and creak is a universal thing. Oh man, it gave me the fear tingles in my fingertips. Love it.

The scariest part or atleast what I thought was scariest was the scene of the Alternate and Thatcher in which we see an Alternate assimilation
@Parragon77
@Parragon77 2 жыл бұрын
Quite certain Adam is meant to be the Mandela Prophet. I also think he has been an alternate his whole life. His skin is not his own, he sees a monster in the mirror and was taken as a a child - it adds up. Something makes me think the overdriven assimilation nun is his true form. He always wears a hoodie, similar in appearance to the nun, and the face flashes when the intruder talks about the monster he saw back when he was taken. At other times he refers to what I assume is the real Adam as "him" and not "you", which fuels the Adam is an alternate thing. He also doesn't react to the toddler assesment video and is telling Evelin things that are not wished to be known - like an alternate. Adam, who sees the distorted nun when he looks in the mirror, would make sense as the prophet, as we know that thing as the messenger.
@Indian_gae_boii

Also in the 2nd volume when we see the alternate in the house with the streched face, it wasn't a random alternate but adams true form and also Adam tells EVE(eleine) things she wish he never told her, at first i thought it was harsh words regarding their relationship but now i think he told her unwanted information or to inflict her with M.A.D same with how the original Adam corrupted Eve in the Mandela catalogue's accounts of the Bible

I haven't seen the video yet, so perhaps you've already said all of this, but Malignance is my favorite segment in the entire Mandela Catalogue. The sheer hopelessness and despair the world has fallen into, to the point where the antichrist himself who has replaced god appears to a PASTOR to tell him that all his life he's been doing the devil's bidding? And that purely, harrowingly evil laugh as he kills himself, just to put himself out of that horrific existence in hopes that something slightly better might lie beyond the veil. I've re-watched it time and time again and it hits harder every time. In my point of view, that one moment captures perfectly the horror of the entire saga in one minute.

For anyone curious, the face for Stanley is actually a Jim Henson creation known as Limbo! He was featured in an experimental short film titled "Limbo: the Organized Mind" and the Sesame Street skit "Count to 10 with Nobody" (said skit is also why so many people get his name wrong). There's also a video on here showing how he was made + showing off the character in general, I'd recommend checking him out! Especially since the usage of his image in this series is, while effective, not really fitting of the character. He's a pretty chill guy That said, while I'm personally not as taken with TMC as most other ppl on the analog horror scene, I gotta admit the improvement Alex has made is awesome as hell, and your coverage is great as always

I’d just like to touch on the art direction that Alex has taken with Vol.4 and how much I *love* it. Alex has created scenes with still images and green screen footage that are composited together to create a environment that feels just as alien and fake as the Alternates. It creates a feeling of familiarity with that added sense of unease due to it’s fake appearance. It’s what I would liken to the uncanny valley. The buildings and characters look real, familiar, and interact with the world like anything else in reality would, but it’s presented in a way that gets you subconsciously confused to the point where it gives you a sense of unease. I’ve genuinely never seen a art-style such as this in any piece of internet horror media, and as a creator of things like horror games myself, I have a very special kind of appreciation for it.

A lot of the time, ARGs and web serials in the horror genre are just plain too dark for me to make out what's going on... and I have a few less common difficulties such as a congenital inability to distinguish faces (which makes the _concept_ of alternates a different dimension of spooky for me, but means if someone's suddenly a different actor or there are more subtle facial changes, I _will_ miss it). So a calm, helpful voice explaining to me what I've just watched is INCREDIBLY helpful, not just for following the plot but also for spotting little details, techniques and effects. I think I seriously wouldn't be able to follow most of these series without Nick's explanations, and even where I could, I wouldn't get a tenth as much out of them. I doubt Nick has accessibility uppermost in mind with these analyses, but they truly open up so much content to the hard of braining like me!

When they get there it’s July 14th and the audio lure is activated on July 15th because it passed midnight, but then they leave on July 14th again after Sarah got scared. I guess this was a perfect time for me to jump into this series, from what I understand, it had a rocky start but now the ideas, production AND execution are proof that practice makes perfect and putting your all into your passion pays off, and not just spiritually. The internet has a problem with refusing to let people improve and then give them their laurels when they do. I really appreciate your earnest way of approaching these series, and taking their work for what it is at any given moment rather than locking them into a pre-existing narrative.

I really loved The Intruder's new look/Gabriel's new voice, Six just has a unnerving appearance but this time, it appears that he has flesh and bones, while Gabriel's voice is exactly how i think Satan would sound like. And i really love the sorrow of Thatcher Davis when he was talking about Ruth, he really nailed the voice acting and makes her death even more sad and depressing.

The comparison to Eraserhead is SPOT ON. I don't really understand why people call this analog horror when you're right - it's really sort of a collage, but an admirably consistent collage tone-wise. Many of those still shots are eerie as hell in their absolute stark stillness.

Most of the location shots strike me as old FMV adventure games, I don't know if that's "breaking away" from analog horror, but if they want to take a 90's aesthetic, that's really part of it. Maybe part of the problem is most of the people watching these videos aren't old enough to know what the time period was actually like. I know this might be totally unrelated, but there is a scene in an old anime Serial Experiments Lain, where the title character looks up to see something standing in her doorway half obscured. It doesn't attack her, it just stands there and stares at her before disappearing. That always creeped me out which make that scene particularly effective for me.

Genuinely thankful that I took time to watch through all of the series from start to current before watching this. I have a lot of thoughts. 1) Thatcher feels like the protagonist the series needed. Thorne Baker does a genuinely exceptional performance. 2) The biggest downside is that while we get the incredible high of everything Baker has brought to the project, we also get lows in performance like Dave Lee who feels like he's out of a Joel Haver comedy sketch and not a horror series like this. 3) I'm glad the look and feel of the series is evolving alongside the Alternates. It's a cool instance of tech reflecting narrative progression. 4) The narrative is starting to feel really cohesive and compelling. SPOILERS BELOW 5) I'm enjoying the development with Adam's story. I suspect he IS the baby that was taken and that he isn't an alternate strictly speaking, but that the abduction changed him. 6) The sequences with the alternates (Ruth's, the two with Thatcher's, and the one that contacts Adam) are surprisingly well executed. The one with Ruth genuinely unnerved me a bit with the way it moved being just the right amount of uncanny. I'm definitely invested and I can't wait for more.

I genuinely think Alex is trying to restructure the series in a very good direction. Understandably this is the rocky period and not everything will hit and things will miss, but holy moly when they hit they hit really hard. The aesthetic and story structure it's moving towards is very unique in the youtube horror scene and I'm genuinely amazed at it's production level every time a new episode comes out. And even if we get to that point where it's basically movie level production, the older episodes will be an excellent example of where someone can come from and then eventually what they can create. Right now I'd give this series a 7/10 and I'm very interested where it will go from here

I agree on so many points. The early Mandela Catalogue stuff was an interesting idea being hindered by poor execution. There was never anything scary about a bunch of goofy photoshops. Eerie, maybe, scary, no. These newer works with the uncanny movements of the creature, the warping of that guys face while he spoke, it drives it so much more into the realm of scary because it's suddenly so much more real and inhuman than just what looks like an overexposed photo of someone smiling a bit creepily. I don't have the patience to follow a lot of these sorts of series any more and your videos are the easiest way to consume them really, but seeing the development in this series, it's honestly something he should be so much more proud of now.

Really good video as always, but the rant on memes is a little strange. A lot of memes are positive, and you can't really rag on the idea of a shitposty community when Alex Kister himself has made Scrimblo Catalogue. The community Mandela Catalogue has fostered is itself a light-hearted one. Memes is how people show their appreciation for it. I still crack up thinking about the Gabriel cat femboy video. It's also quite sussy how at no point the performance of Gabriel in the last scene is mentioned. All of the improvements aside, that scene took me out of the story entirely, as Gabriel, my favorite character, was reduced to a power rangers maniac cartoon villain. I loved Mandela at first due to its depiction of satan. A being extremely cunning and extremely proud existence, calculating, patient, intelligent, devoid of any empathy or relatability, completely eldritch in its nature, a truly inevitable evil whose influence is felt in all corners of society. I love the reconstruction of Satan as the most terrifying, anti-human, anti-good creature that could possibly exist, when in so many stories Satan is just a jobber. My favorite part of the series became exactly the reason i disliked all other depictions of Satan. The script writing for Gabriel was just such a generic villain monologue delivered in the most disappointing way. He felt human to me, like a crazy, drunk on power person, when he should feel like a unknowable entity of corruption. Other than that, i agree on every point, there were many improvements, but i do think there was also regression in some aspects.

This might be well known or I might be just dumb, but this last episode in special, reminded me so much of classic German goth movies (german expressionism if anyone want to look into) from the 20s and 30s, even the alternate designs are nosferatu-esque, again I might be completely wrong but to me it is a better comparison than just analog horror

I think I preferred the series when it was indistinct and impossible to fully grasp outside of creepy still shots. It used to have this sense that this horror was some biblical perversion that was hacking our reality, though it couldn't fully exist within it. Turning the series into a character-focused narrative with big detailed monsters on-screen sort of spoiled the magic for me, personally. Way more "monster movie"-ish now. But the effects in the new volumes are incredible! The animation of the alternates is creepy as hell, and the directing and cinematography that's being applied to the new format are all so well done. So, it transitioned from one great thing into a thing that's still great for lots of different reasons, I'd say.

I really don't know how i feel about this video, like it didn't really feel much like a discussion on the story or theories on what could be happening type video. more like a highlights from the new videos reel with your personal thoughts on the project itself, this video felt very "inside baseball" style. more like an acknowledgment of the outstanding progress Alex has made so far and how compared to his previous works he is improving massively. you always have had these more creator focused sections during videos going over what you think of it as an actual project rather than the video or arg is about. but idk, this video felt like it solely was meant to highlight the huge improvement Alex has made (which deserves highlighting) rather than going over story details with your thoughts on what could be happening.

Normally, I do well with horror. Few things tend to genuinely scare me or even unsettle me. I usually just go in fully aware it's a fiction, and prepared to enjoy the work for what it is and appreciate the things it does. But The Mandela Catalogue is different...This one is one of very few things that actually upsets me. It makes me hesitant to watch, it makes me uncomfortable and almost paranoid. It makes me feel...ialone. It's the same kind of feeling of immersion I would get when I was a kid and playing horror games for the first time. All of this is to say that...Not only do I think Alex did a fucking phenomenal job, and vehemently agree that the memes are disrespectful to his work, but also...and I'm sure you get this alot...But this time, I have to truly thank you for effectively holding our hands in the dark. Without you, I would never be able to get through The Mandela Catalogue and be able to fully appreciate what Alex did here.

I think the way the MC series naturally progressed has actually worked to its benefit. Starting from the beginning, it invites you towards the uncanny valley it thrives in, using these different clues as "breadcrumbs." Gradually you find yourself slipping down into said valley out of curiosity. You start to see glimpses of what dwells down there, but you're never really sure if you've reached the bottom.
