Lorelai giving back the money makes so much sense to me. As a mom, wouldn't you rather have your daughter come to dinner of her own free will than due to a contract you made.
@activatedcharcoal Жыл бұрын
Lol, but that would involve Emily doing the the most humiliating thing she can imagine- calling up her daughter and inviting her to dinner. Why treat Lor like a fellow human being when you could just order her around like a dog? :D

@@activatedcharcoal reading this made me acutely aware that despite all of the confidence Emily claims to have, she is deeply DEEPLY afraid of rejection. She can’t just ask someone for something, she HAS to make sure there is no possible way for them to say no. Ie family dinners, having DAR meetings at the inn, etc.

@Iamjustherek my mom and another mom I know do something similar. They tend to have a "practical" reason for making plans with their kids. They never just ask to grab lunch together or something. It's always, "Let's do something practical together because it's easier that way, and that makes it harder for you to say no." It's a nicer form of manipulation. We've been working with them on just asking to spend time together when they're free. We don't need a reason, because they're a lot easier to be around than Emily lol

It’s so weird how Emily dumped all that Jess stuff on Lorelai. Like “How could you let her date him?” GIRL! You don’t have to like him but why do you blame it on Lorelai. Lorelai doesn’t like him either! Lorelai makes it clear that she doesn’t like Jess, but Rory still dated him. She knew her mom didn’t like him, but she still dated him. And Lorelai deals with it. But Emily decides to blame Lorelai instead of Rory. It was Rory’s choice. She doesn’t have the pride to tell Rory that she’s dating a guy who she doesn’t approve of, but she can tell Lorelai! Like what did she do? All she did was support her daughter and keep up with you but you blame her over the person who you think is making the mistake!

Well. Lorelai is Rory's mother and Rory is still a minor. Emily is an old fashion person and she thinks minors shouldn't date someone their parents don't like, something that honestly is not that crazy seeing the people teenagers date...

it was the same for Rory's birthday, yes Rory was kinda rude to her, but she didn't even ask Rory what she even wanted to do in her birthday and when Rory didn't act in a way she wanted she literally ignore her and became cold and even more rude to her own granddaughter

Ugh I love every one of these analysis videos on Emily. She gets way too much credit and adoration within the Gilmore Girls fandom simply because of how sassy and witty she is, but she’s such a horrible and narcissistic mother that refuses to accept she’s done anything wrong. Lorelai ALWAYS has to make things right and apologize, whilst Emily rarely (if at all) even attempts to apologize. She always places the blame on Lorelai and makes her feel as if she’s not good enough. No wonder Lorelai shuts her out. Thank you for talking about this!

It was so odd to me how Emily made her assistance transactional and always held it over Lorelai’s head. Meanwhile, Lorelei barely had much money or resources but always gave Rory everything and didn’t expect anything back! Her Grandmother responded by telling her, "Well call the fire department and make sure they come around the back entrance without the lights or sirens." Appearance is everything to old money. So when Lorelai doesn't conform, it's a major blow. Regardless... it's all manipulation and bullshit... I was shocked when in the episode where Christopher comes over and Lorelai thinks her mother invited him over and they both start yelling at each other until Emily comes in and tells Christopher to leave that Lorelai didn’t turn to her mother and say something to the effect of “see? THAT was why I didn’t want you meddling in my personal business. Is it so hard for you to believe that I have legitimate reasons for not wanting certain people on my life even if you don’t agree with the reasons?!” I couldn’t believe she complimented her and said “aren’t you supposed to wear a cape when you do that?”
@kierralovestv Жыл бұрын
If she would have used that moment to point it out everyone would further villainize her (Lorelai) and blame her for why the relationship doesn’t go anywhere I think the show does clearly tell you who not to root for but also does a good job showing people can be flawed but still likeable I mean hell, even actual cereal k^llers have had supporters in history. People root for bad people even if there’s hardcore evidence showing they shouldn’t unfortunately
@lizparylo7445 Жыл бұрын
I also think Lorelai wanted to positively reinforce her mother sticking up for her. Yes, Emily always meddles and violates boundaries, but this moment is one of the very very rare ones where she sees that her logic was flawed and symapthizes with Lorelai. When she tells Christopher to leave, she takes control of the situation in Lorelai’s defense, which might be her trying to atone for her behavior on some level. And I think Lorelai as a character knows that these shining moments where Emily actually treats her like *her daughter* , are few and far between. If she were to turn around and try to make it a teachable moment, it would have reinforced Emily’s tendency to be a martyr and say Lorelai doesn’t appreciate her. Plus, the sheer relief of Emily opening her mouth and it *not* being something evil… I would’ve thanked her too lmao
@Aelffwynn Жыл бұрын
@lizparylo7445 So much this. Lorelai tries to use positive reinforcement. She even does it with Jess. She knows that explaining her point of view doesn't always work (with her family, it never does.)

@@kierralovestv my mission is to raise awareness of this kind of abuse. I like how you included reactive abuse because I see a lot of people who blame themselves for a perfectly normal reaction to the kind of poking narcs do. This is my thing. I could talk about it for hours. Emily is pretty textbook. Financial abuse is a thing. And it’s terrible. I’m so sorry if that’s happening to you. Or if you were just referring to the show. Regarding the family, I will never say to this to a client: but it’s your (insert family member). If they’re abusive, distance or extreme modified contact. Gray rock. And my father passed (he started Hoovering before he died). I don’t regret not going to his services. And people said I would.

Woooow thank you so much for sharing that. Because people often tell you that you can’t go no contact bc if they die you’ll regret it but I’ve never agreed. I think if you make the decision and think it through you won’t because that means you already understand there’s no hope of saving the relationship whether you stick around or not. It’s choosing to be indifferent and I think we all only have one life to live and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna spend it with anyone who makes me feel bad about myself. I always look at it like “well if they lived would you have been able to actually get through to them or is that blind faith” because if the signs are there that they don’t want to make an effort to be better there’s truly nothing you can do. I’ve gone no contact with most of my family for a multitude of reasons. I have my close inner circle of people/family that can respect my boundaries, that’s all I need.
@kierralovestv Жыл бұрын
And I agree with the mission. Because I understand what it’s like to feel powerless and unable to identify what’s happening to you I want other people who watch to learn how to clearly explain why what’s happening to them is wrong because not being able to explain doesn’t mean it’s not happening
@listeningwithleslie1353 Жыл бұрын
@@kierralovestv for sure. There’s so much I want to say. My family is incapable of changing because they don’t see the problem. They don’t think they’re doing anything wrong. This type of abuse sets you up to think the victim is the one doing everything wrong. If we just try harder but it’s never enough. They keep you locked in a pattern of intermittent reward (love bombing) and then withholding. It’s an addiction like meth. Harder. But finding support and people that will love you and not abuse you is so so important. I have that too. Family doesn’t always mean blood.

As I re-watch the GG I understand each character more and more. I get to see them through different set of eyes. The first time I was young, second time i was a new mom and now that i get ready to warch it with my daughter and talk it out. I can honestly say that Emily took care of the family's PR and she hated the fact that Lorelia didn't care about how it seemed to others. Lorelia didn't want to continue the cycle. She wanted to hug and love her daughter ❤
@Aelffwynn Жыл бұрын
I relate to your spiel about why the video was late. It's encouraging me to keep working on my own projects even though it's been a while since I last tried. 💜 Thank you. (I have no preference about upload schedules/announcements.) Wall of text incoming: Emily displays some narcissistic behavior. But you're right. We don't know her exact intentions/if she's a Narcissist ™️. This is how I see it: The way she was raised, Social Status = Survival. So she does her best to keep her family "alive," despite the "threat to survival" of Lorelai's storyline. And she views it as her *responsibility* to infringe on Lorelai's freedom to make that happen. (In her mind, she's the President issuing an executive order, for the safety of herself and her people.) This is the context through which, I believe, she views the world. You can tell by the sheer panic in her voice anytime there's the slightest social gaffe. That's her role as a wife and mother-- to protect their status. Even in her fun moments, she's usually basing her actions on that social construct (e.g. when she calls Sheera Huntzberger a "two bit gold digger." Yeah, it's a good jab in their world, but it's just classism.) And her (and Richard's) OBSESSION with getting rid of Luke, because he's "low class." They don't care about his character or even his money. It's all about maintaining their delicate status. You can tell even more if you watched her arc on AYITL. (I didn't like a lot of AYITL, but Emily's arc was amazing, imo.) After Richard dies, her world is rocked. And she begins to realize that all the rigid social structure she based her life on is BULLSHIT. Then she acts "crazy," trying out a working-class woman's clothes (!!!), and calling out the DAR ladies in a way that would have sent Season 1 Emily into wild-eyed panic. She's a fish who's finally aware of the water she swims in, and she's having an identity crisis. I'd pay money just to watch a series following Emily on her post-Richard journey of self-discovery. From villain of the show to anti-heroine. I had a LOT of thoughts. Thanks if you read that 😅

When something bad happens to me I'm always afraid you'll say I told you so." That's so grey rock and grey rock is a good strategy, actually!

@activatedcharcoal Жыл бұрын
Despite all of her toxicity, Emily does manage to grow and even appreciate Lorelai now and then. ASP does a wonderful job of writing unlikable characters sympathetically. The show reveals that much of her toxic behavior stems from feeling inadequate and useless. She fritters away her life throwing parties and buying baubles- completely unable to even cook a meal. Meanwhile her daughter raises a child singlehandedly, works, buys a home, puts herself through school, and builds a business. Emily is trapped in a gilded cage and the only way she knows how to make herself feel better is by putting others down.

I read somewhere that Kelly Bishop, the actress who played Emily, played Emily as unlikable as she could. She did a good job. I mean, her treatment of Lorelai is SO harsh! Emily as a narcissist makes so much sense! 👏What baffles me so much is that no one except Lorelai and occasionally Rory and Richard calls Emily out on her behavior!

I feel like Lorelai is always apologizing first when she shouldn't have to. She can sometimes get herself into those situations by not speaking up sooner, but I still don't think that discredits her feelings and reactions. If she was celebrated in the same was as an Edina Monsoon or Lucille Bluth for how openly horrible but entertaining they are, I'd give the Emily Gilmore love a pass. But people treat her like a hero of the story, and I find that aggravating.

I think Emily views her relationship with Lorelai as a business, but I’m not sure it was this way before Lorelai got pregnant. I think it’s a tit-for-tat kinda thing (hopefully I’m using the term right, English is not my first language) What I think is she had a very strict way to Lorelai’s upbringing, she always treated Lorelai like a 4yo, regardless of her age, wanting to have more control over her, which of course, Lorelai didn’t like. We only have the flashback episode to see exactly how it was, but Lorelai might’ve known Emily was manipulative towards other people she didn’t directly have control over, unlike her daughter. So what I think happened when Lorelai ran away from home, Emily shifts her relationship with Lorelai from being in “total” control to being a worse mother because she never forgave Lorelai for running away. I even think she can’t really understand why she ran away because she thinks her parenting was all right. The problem for her was Lorelai, who wouldn’t be submissive all the time. So she gets to manipulate her now because she’s still hurt she doesn’t have the relationship with her daughter that she wished she had. It’s her retaliation for being hurt. Of course, that doesn’t excuse her for being a terrible mother. It should have been a sign that something was wrong with her parenting but she took it the other way. It’s easy for me to say Emily is a very interesting character to watch because my mother isn’t like that, but I understand why so many people hate her. I love these videos BTW.

When did Lorelai talk about how they hid her away when she was pregnant? Could someone please give me an episode name?
@kierralovestv Жыл бұрын
I can’t remember the exact episode, I’d have to rewatch again but its somewhere in season 2 where she talks about how they hid her and lied about her being pregnant to their friends she mentions it very briefly and laughs I think she mentions it to quickly point out that her parents are non confrontational and that the gilmores are known to avoid things

Forgive me if you've talked about this somewhere else? But do you think that possibly lorelei has adhd? Like, she's so bright. But she also seems to be slightly disorganized, in several places at once, makes weird non-sequitors in conversations. Like, for her job she can mask and be absolutely perfection and then be kinda tired and need all the coffee. Also, the caffeine addiction.
@kierralovestv Жыл бұрын
I think Lorelai might have ADHD too tbh and anxiety. Sometimes people think when people talk a bunch it’s because they’re just a huge talker but sometimes its to fill an uncomfortable silence that’s aiding in their pre-existing anxiety and while Lorelai does talk alot in general some of it may be because of her anxiety. If you watch any scenes with her alone with her parents it comes out even more then. If they showed Lorelai finding out she has ADHD I wouldn’t be shocked at all

I highly doubt that.

before I say this, I'm not trying to be hateful towards you. so in this video you said Emily shows behaviors of/is a narcissist but most narcissists are self aware and are actually very scarred of being a bad person here are some better words that you could use that I think you're trying to say selfish egotistical vanity self- absorbed smug again this isn't hate I just don't like it when people say disorders as a negative adjective

YAY thank you for getting this up for us!! 🤍 there's a lot of discourse online about how Lorelai is insane for not wanting to just 'have a little dinner once a week' and this is exactly why!! Emily doesn't do kind things for free!!
@promisemochi Жыл бұрын
also every dinner there'll be at least ONE time (and that's if we're being nice) that she'll be degraded, have her parenting questioned, her life-style questioned, her job questioned, her abilities questioned. i can't imagine he emotional "hyping up" i'd have to do before going to that every week, plus how emotionally draining it would be to leave there and have to put on a brave happy face for your daughter. it's not just "a little dinner once a week." and i wish more people would see that
@xeshacinds Жыл бұрын
@@promisemochi 10000% this!!! I cannot imagine having to sit somewhere for hours on end every week where I'm berated just for existing, especially from someone who is supposed to love you unconditionally. I absolutely wouldn't be able to do it!
