💯 we are entering the golden age of the marathon. Improved running tech, young athletes forgoing the track to attack the marathon, more media attention, more money. They use to say the 2 hour barrier was unbreakable…It’s now very breakable.

Its the same that happened to the Ironman pro circuit 6-7 yrs ago. Suddenly it was no longer older guys with a few young ones and then the fast young ones did OLY triathlons. Now young and old supertalents come into Ironman straight away and the times dropped a LOT, especially on the marathons in the end. (I realize a lot of that drop on running could also be shoes, as Ironmans (having done a couple), is especially rewarding when it comes to super shoes)

The talent has always been there, with the big cash prizes and new shoe technologies, pacers, fast race courses, etc., it is painfully obvious that the athletes of yesterday especially those from the African nations would have broke the 2hr barrier a long time ago. I find it even more amazing though that the African female athletes are running sub 220 and most recently the WR from a female is 211. this is just as incredible as a sub 2 hr marathon. Marathoning has never been as exciting as it is today.

If that's not reason for increasing prize money, I don't know what will. Sifan Hassan, won Chicago, with a 2:13 performance. Her time would have won hundreds of marathons in the 80's and decades before. These runners deserve a huge increase in prize money.

The scale in the two charts shown in the video is not the same. You can only visualize the differences between the two races if you plot the elevation data in the same scale. It is obvious that NY is not as flat as Chicago, but the difference between the two races is not as severe as the charts seem to suggest.

Kiptum, will smoke this guy. He may well retire with the paycheck which would be a shame, but Kiptum is just quicker. Downhills in races count for a lot in races in terms of speed and rest, arguably more than uphills. I think we can only consider him in the picture if he can run a flat marathon consistently at sub 2.02 (which is crazy)! I do hope that the Olympics brings all of the big names together healthy and willing to bury themselves, but I'm not sure they have the mentality to really fight these days, considering how many of them are front runners in the later stages of races. It will be fascinating. I do think though, that the WR will drop before then.

Interesting observation because disgraced former sprinter Ben Johnson also had yellow eyes when won the 100m gold medal at the 1988 Olympics, this happens when the kidneys have to work harder due to drugs.

@@carlholland3819 Untrue. Every shoe, consisting of mass as they do, slows you down. The bare foot is best. And yes, I'm a runner. Ran 143 kilometres in 24 hours without shoes, my friend.

Cant measure nickels and dimes. Too may factors to consider. Even the course mile markers can be slightly off. Lots of runners are better on hills . Doesnt slow them down much. There is on runner that runs boston every year because he is awesome on down hills and up hills but cant run flat surface. All n all no one cares about what your splits are. I ran blistering splits in the nationals at 800 but faded in the last 200. No one cares if my first 600 was under 1.20

You have said it ❤ I have come to understand marathon athletes are affected by the courses , i mean some perform well in flat course while others perform well in hill courses but kiptum is not affected that much as for now from Valencia marathon, London and Chicago marathon but am waiting to see how he will perform in Boston
