Bigger problem than you might think. I know I saw one pundit ABSOLUTELY BAFFLED that the guy in charge of the Sonic franchise was not excited for the PS5 Pro and still intended to support the PS4 and thought he was making a poor choice. SOMEHOW it never occured to him that Sonic games sell best on Nintendo platforms (and yes that's weird to say for us old folk) and thus they're going to aim to run well on Switch and if it's already running good on Switch, then you may as well do a PS4 version. Because, guess what? Sonic's main audience is still KIDS and KIDS (parents) CAN'T AFFORD A FREAKING $700 GAME CONSOLE!

I remember back in the day Nintendo Power would have something like 4-5 different scores for each game. They'd have one person do the main review and that would be the main score but they'd list several other reviewer's names and the scores they gave the game. As well as including a little profile for each reviewer giving some insight into their favorite genres. I genuinely don't know why IGN doesn't do this, it's not always fair to attribute every score given by a singular writer to IGN itself as if it is a monolith but putting out only the one score for every game no matter how anticipated is what gives that impression in the first place.

The problem is that the game is not Semi Open and like Super Star Saga, the shops are not accessible building but NPC‘s standing outside to talk to. There is no charm that you play a RPG it feels more like you play trough levels build as islands. Just boring. And the ship is not moveable at all just click and go. As much as I dislike IGN, unfortunately I agree with almost every point they made. This really is just an "okay" game. It has a lot of charm, but the weird design choices with the controls and how luigi functions combined with the overall kinda bland story just makes it nothing to write home about. I think 5 is a pretty reasonable score but of course anything below a 7 people assume means bad, when that's not the case. 5 is average, and that's what this game is. Not good not bad just okay

I think we should encourage their honesty like this. They played it all the way through and said how they felt. For years we accused them of not playing the game and just telling us what we wanted to hear. We should encourage this

12:35 the limited resources is not as much of a problem in sticker star but i did run into that issue playing KH Chain of Memories where i couldnt beat a boss because my deck ran out and i couldn't go back and grind new cards because the last area i went into leading up to the said boss was the hundred acre wood, which has no encounters and no way to go back to previous areas you cleared. It's sadly where i ended up stopping that game and made me weary of games like Sticker Star, even if it maybe doesn't deserve it.

Reminds me of the time Paper Mario TTYD (original) got a 5/10 from Gamespot for being too "kiddie" and "childish". Ironic, considering the dialogue in the game is some of the most mature of any Mario game.

I mean we go from multiple depressed characters to catfishing and the most childish mafia (childish in a good way, it's still and "all ages" game) in existance. Just the japanise version of Rogueport alone would of given this game a T for Teens if the dialogue was slightly tweaked and the characters were changed to humans.

People seem to be crapping all over IGN, but did you even play this game? I slugged through 5 hours before putting it down for good. The game CONSTANTLY holds your hand and babysits as if you can't think at all. The action is constantly interrupted by little cutscenes. The NPCs are needlessly chatty not adding much in the way of actually fleshing out the world. The battle is nice, but even the lag of getting into a battle, with the little loading screens everywhere, this game just feels old in all the wrong ways. Also, who is this game for? For nostalgic 30+ year olds? Then why the handholding? For younger audiences? Then why the old-timey "Twisten Sprout", hair-doo wax, daddio oh vibes in one of the first islands. The puns from Snoutlet who introduces himself as "not a pig" but then continues to constantly reference pigs ... in a world that may not even have pigs ... it's just tiresome. I was incredibly disappointed, considering earlier Mario and Luigi RPGs were my favorites.

Exactly. Never been an IGN fan but the review was perfectly valid. The game just isn't that fun especially with the bafflingly confusing control decisions and changes to the core mechanics. Not a bad game, but definitely not the comeback I was hoping for.

Just spent 4 hours playing it, if I didn't have to sleep I would play more. I have played every single Mario and Luigi Game and it still has the same feel of the game series. I smiled the whole time. Saw the IGN review, eh how did they give Origami King a better score?

Nah, the guy who reviewed this game is a true fan and his criticism is 100% valid. IGN is not one person reviewing, so obviously they are inconsistent but zooming in on the individual reviewers will fix that. It's people like you who take it out of context and jumping on the bandwagon sharing misinformation that's problematic and hypocritical. 👎 Also, speaking of powerful companies, shouldn't speaking out on Nintendo when everyone else gives blind 9s en 10s because it's what people want to hear, be encouraged? I'm usually right there with you Lady D but you're of the mark on this one...Check out Digital Foundry's review on the game (its in their latest weekly) It runs like trash and can't keep a stable frame rate. Also, it wasn't done in house by Nintendo, but a 3rd party. And 'IGN' isn't a person, its the writer/author who's opinion is the review. IGN is a garbage company and i wouldn't listen to anyone who works there. They've proven they have no credibility and work with developers as long as they pay... Its like Network News, most will watch that instead of looking for a more nuanced opinion. But then again, if they (people who watch the prevalent sources) care so little, why do you care about their opinion so much. And the Mario RPGs are okay but they are a little pedantic. They are for everyone, instead of just adults.

This story about Mario and Luigi Brothership's review from IGN has really been blown out of the water, I am not defending IGN as a business or corporation. The editors of IGN definitely have a bias towards progressive views and "inclusion" in the games/media they review. When it comes to Brothership, however, the review is being done by Logan Plant, who has done 9 IGN review this year for the site and game 7 of those 9 games a rating of 7 or higher. Super Monkey ball Banana Rumble(8), Mario Party Jamboree(9), Princess Peach: Showtime!(7) all from the same dude. If it was just a case of "this game had no progressive themes=bad review" then there would be no way that Jamboree or monkey ball would have such high review scores from the same reviewer. I genuinely think Logan probably just didn't like the game that much and that's the end of it really.

Though he says he's a fan of the Mario and Luigi series yet when he talks about the tutorials he seems to forget that Dream Team and some of the other earlier MS titles had way more tutorials than Brothership. All I'm saying is that it's a hypocritical to say this when other titles in this series had the same issue but on a higher scale.

It was the same deal with IGN with Days Gone, ended up being one of my favorite games ever, bet zombie apocalypse type game besides Dying Light, and a lot of people because of IGN’s review skipped it, come 2 years later many people became convinced by word of mouth of how good it was and loved it and couldn’t understand what IGN’s reviewers were thinking.

Love this one, but the whole IGN thing vs. the Big N has been going on ever since the GameCube was launched. Mainly because every time IGN has claimed a Nintendo system will fail, the public has proved them wrong (except perhaps for Virtua Boy, but we don't talk about that..). In fact, IGN claimed the Super Mario Bros. Movie (the recent one, not the Bob Hoskins one) was doomed to fail at the box office, however, on its release it surpassed any Disney film by a longshot. Decades ago (no pun intended), IGN did sagely go after third-party games, where they rarely criticized the Big N's three main IPs: Mario, Link/Zelda and Metroid. Where recently, they just want to nitpick because the Switch itself is doing great, and it appears its successor will do well in the future. As for me, I'm loving the game since they've fixed the timing upon the button pushing, and the graphics are amazing, not to mention the innovative gameplay, and excellent cutscenes! But that's just me.

But with Majora's Mask & Lightning Returns, there were ways to slow down time, thus giving you more time to get things done. Hell, in Majora's Mask, they let you play the Song of Time to reset the clock, so you can avoid that bad ending. They weren't game turn offers for me and a lot of players, so I'm sorry, but those weren't the best examples. (Not fighting you on Sticker Star though.)

While the review is probably absolutely trash... the fact that in current year many of us know that "top" gaming journalism is basically corporate shilling means that sites like IGN are failing. As you mentioned, they are throwing massive amounts of money into being the top search result anyone gets when researching a game for any kind of review... and most normal gamers would avoid their website and reviews. They'd only be getting newbies, or folks who aren't really knowledgeable about games journalism. In that vein, my thought is they are intentionally giving absurd reviews in order to garner more traffic. They've selected now two games, in short order, to write massively obtuse reviews about (Dragon Age, and Brothership)... sparking controversy in the gaming community which will drive people to find out why. This will bring a small selection of people BACK to their site to find out why (some of us will stick to videos like this for our information).

Some of these grabs of cut scenes and gameplay genuinely look humorous and very fun. Reminds me of the original Super Mario RPG on the SNES.
