The worst thing about this game isn’t the lack of level sharing, but the release date. It released December 2016 (in the US, the release date might be different in your country), towards the end of the Wii U and 3DS era. I know Mario Maker 2 wouldn’t come out for 3 years, but why not just start developing that game for the Switch instead of this 6/10 3DS port?!

Ah yes, I remember when I got Mario Maker for 3DS thinking it had all the bells and whistles of Mario Maker for the WiiU. Although It was disappointing that I couldn’t search for other people’s levels or upload my own levels, I remember having a fun time letting my brothers make their own levels then me playing them and then having them play my levels. I think the biggest disappointment for me was the fact that there were no Mystery Mushrooms (costumes).

I am a huge Mario Maker 1 and 2 player. Combined, they are most likely the game I have played the most in my whole life. I remember when the 3DS version was announced, I went through a similar experience of first being excited and then really disappointed. Even if it just had a way to import/export levels between your 3DS and your WiiU, it would have been great. The Switch's release was still a year away. The idea of being able to do some level making on the go was amazing, even if it was just the first versions of your level before you 'polish them off' in your WiiU once you get home. I would have bought a 3DS right away (I actually bought my WiiU specifically for Mario Maker). Nowadays though, it's having a bit of a revival. I became a bit of a handheld console collector, so I know own a 3DS. More so, Pretendo means you can play Pretendo WiiU levels for free on the 3DS. And now I am completely burnt out from making levels. So the 3DS is now the most portable way to play 100 Mario Challenge. I really love it. And the Pretendo levels are so much better (at least in Expert) than the WiiU levels from before Nintendo shut it down. Because the people that really care so much about Mario Maker as to install pretendo to keep sharing levels are usually people that really want to make a good level.

Mario Maker 3DS was pretty much the only game I had when I was a child, and I still remember getting all Bowser medals. I also got around 400 hours of playtime in Mario Maker 3DS and I would play it again, but my 3DS broke a few years ago and I lost all of my 120 levels that I built. Now I always get sad when I try to play again, which is why I stopped playing Super Mario Maker 3DS.

This video reminded me I owned all three Mario markers from Wii U to Switch the only annoying thing that happened when playing is I lost multiple stylus due to stuff like breaking them since I was younger and doing a really dumb move being putting my 3ds stylus in the Wii U gamepad stylus holder thing which got it stuck because I didn’t know how to get it out back then so most of my time I literally had to use my fingers to make courses

The Super Mario Challenge is legitimately one of the most brutal and unfun things I had to do as a completionist. Some of the medals were easy, but as the levels progressed, it got to the point where they were next to impossible, and I would take month long breaks because I was so livid at how difficult it was. It almost felt like Nintendo didn’t play test the game with some of these.

I got SMM3DS for Christmas in 2019 alongside a 3DS and I loved that game. I had parental controls on my 3DS so I couldn't do online stuff. I have SMM2 now so I have the definitive experience, but SMM3DS will always be nostalgic to me.

Here's the biggest thing that pisses me off. So I lost my cartridge a while back and I downloaded a copy of the game via HShop to look back at my old levels, but when I started the game it had me make a new data file which DELETED all my old levels...

I got the game for Christmas in 2019 with a 2DS XL and I poured lots of hours in the game. I made lots of levels. I played the game alot from 2019-2022 until I got Mario Maker 2 For Christmas in 2022 with a Nintendo Switch. Sometimes it feels weird going back to Mario Maker 3DS but I enjoy playing the levels I made. They bring back lots of memories.

I was also another person like you who never got to experience mario maker 1 on the wii u because unfortunately my parents couldn't afford it and the only official Nintendo console I had was the 3ds (Again like you in a similar situation) but the thing is I never even got street pass to work properly on my 3ds and thus I never got to experience any other user made levels which honestly really sucked.. the only thing I played was the 100 mario challenge and after a few years of just doing that I eventually abandoned the game and to this day I have never gone back to it..

Not letting you upload your courses online in the 3DS version is the most baffling decision ever. That's single handedly why I never got it, otherwise I would have double dipped after already having the Wii U version. Now days I probably wouldn't either way, but back then I would get almost every major Nintendo release without thinking twice, even if it's a slightly different version of a game I already have, and even *I* didn't see any point in a Mario Maker without level uploading

I wanted to get Mario Maker, but only had a New 2DS XL and Switch. Saw it at EB Games (now GameStop) and decided I'll get it next time I went there. Then Mario Maker 2 was announced, and I decided to wait patiently. And seeing the cutbacks as well as the Nintendo servers shutting recently, it was a good choice.

If there's anything I straight up hate about Mario Maker 3DS that was not mentioned here, it's that you unlock course elements by completing 100 Mario Challenge. At one point, I was just unable to get anywhere, so I ended up downloading Wii U levels to use assets I was missing. Locking all the cool stuff behind a difficult game mode just is not fun, especially when Wii U users get everything by making more levels

I'm glad I didn't buy it. (I did end up with a copy as a loose cartridge for it was sitting on a swingset at the local park. I went home and put it in. _This cartridge was in rain water, might I remind you._ It still worked **AND** it didn’t bust my 3DS. Win Win, sort of. For some reason, 3DS cartridges are invincible. I remember this one time I put the cartridge of Super Mario 3D Land in one of my shorts pockets and forgot to take it out before it ended up in the laundry and when I took it out and dried it, is still worked!

I played this game until I accidentally dropped the game cartridge into cheese and then behind a table that we needed to move. I licked the cheese off (ew) and ran the game, it worked fine! Except one of the objects weren’t loaded and the game crashed and I got too freaked out to play my 2DS (yes it was a 2DS) I still have that 2DS and I might mod it one day… if I can get a USB to SD card one day lol I also had the Wii U version but I never played it except like twice

This version of the game was the first game in my life that I felt like it was a complete scam. I mean, sure it was cool and all, but it missed the point of Super Mario Maker. I did make some levels and tried the 100 Mario challenge n shit, but it grew boring very quickly due to the fact that, as you said, felt more like a normal Mario game with a level editor.
