Apples & Oranges. Completely different kinds of amps. And this guy never showed off the amp to its potential. You aren't going to play Ratt on a Hotrod Deluxe. It's more of a blues/60's/70's rock amp.

bird718 I actually perfer the distortion so far on my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe which was my first amp & got in 2006. Just picked up the Marshall DSL40C and really like the clean on it, still working on getting the distortion I want on it, but I adore both amps. Was very happy with the Fender as my first amp. Can't wait to tear into the Marshall more

This was to be expected ,however the Marshall clean is still pretty good while the Fender dirty was worthless, making imho the Marshall more versatile.

Thanks for the reviews, I actually combine the Marshall along with the Hot Rod for my sound. The Fender adds the additional bass for more lower end and I split a signal with a DD7 Delay into stereo, Main out feeds a TRIO into the Fender (for drums and bass) .Using a Super CrunchBox for the distortion into the delay spices up each amp. Works well for me.

Both sound great... packed full of sound options, with power and quality to use live... Won't ever understand why amp companies don't build giant handles (m@rshall quad style) in the sides of their combos, and options for wheels on the base... so much awesomeness poured into the tone... so little thought put into how gigging musicians actually lift, set up, and use these live.

I went to a music store looking yesterday looking to buy an amp and actually A/B'd these two amps. The Marshall had more high end gain (better for metal) while theFender had a more bluesy voicing. The Marshall had digital reverb, while the Fender had spring reverb, which clearly sounded better. It was a tough choice and I kept going back and forth between both of them, but eventually I walked out with the Fender. The better sounding reverb did it for me!

As an owner of both amps I can say they both serve their purpose. However ended up selling the HRD and keeping the DSL it really is more versatile. I use booth channels on the amp for color I use a velevet fuzz, archer and a vertex boost in the front and a tc flashback in the loop. Quite happy with the tones I get either with a les Paul or my strat. Great vid Phil Love your videos keep rockin 🤘🏼

Great video as always! I appreciate this comparison as I own both amps and like you, find each has its strengths and weaknesses. I tend to use the Marshall more because I love that distortion sound but I prefer the Fender for clean tones and reverb. I also find the Fender cuts through better with a larger group. If I wasn't so lazy I'd probably haul both to gigs and aby them depending on the song. Thanks again for all your videos, I really enjoy them.

These DSL Marshalls are a fantastic amp. Professional sound, legendary crunch, easy to set the required tone. I have a 15 watt version which I love, I have a 4 x 12 cab with it, and it sounds bigger and better on its own than with the bigger cab. I had to take the back off the cab to get a similar sound, but bigger. Even then there was very little difference between the single speaker, and the 4 speaker cab. Great video Phil 🙂

I have the dsl 40 and love it. I think its versatility is its best attribute. I play classic rock, 90's alternative and punk and metal and it can handle all of those great. The shared eq took a minute to figure out because the clean seemed a lot brighter than the gain channels but you can just roll the volume back a touch and it's perfect. The dual reverb settings is nice but neither reverb is very good. That's the main drawback. The fender has better reverb and slightly better clean but the Marshall is more versatile in my opinion. Love your videos thanks man.

I bought my 17 year old son a DSL40C in June (2019) and thought the Celestion seventy/80 was bright. I replaced the speaker with a Celestion G12 cream back 65 and it sounds great. My guitarist in my band has a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe from Corona, Ca and he A-B played these amps and prefers the Marshall. The Marshall rocks with the cream back, worth the money.

Hey Philip, I really look forward to your reviews. Even if it's not something I'm currently thinking about. You're one of the few KZbin reviewers I trust to be impartial. I bought a Peavey classic mini head and I think getting a Marshall DSL401 would compliment it brilliantly, A mini stack with my little 1x12 speaker sitting on the Marshall and the Peavey on top. I gig quite a bit, sometimes with an orchestra where keeping volume down is tricky, but other times at regular club levels. Keep up the great work. I have had my Hot Rod Deluxe v.3 for about 2-1/2 years now, and have loved it. You are right, it takes pedals very well, and consequently, can perform well in most genres. I looked at the Marshall, and though it does the British Marshall thing better than the HRD, that was not what I was after. With the right pedal, maybe I'd eat those words, who knows? It really depends on the tone you're after, but both are great options for the price point.

I know they're both great little amps but there's a reason you see more Marshalls all over the back drop of your favorite bands. Also the marshall really shines as you crank it up it gets better and better and has the sweetest sag that just takes you right into all of your favorite groups tones from the past. And if you put a little boost on, your face will melt like hot solder instantly. That is before I attach any pedals to it other than a little drive And you don't even need that. Nice video it really showed the differences. At 1st I thought the reverb was a little weak it kind of is but I think they did that intentionally knowing you were gonna put a bunch of stuff in front of it in the effects loop, it's more of a background reverb than in your face. A Little background when I received my marshall I played it for about a month started checking into different tubes just for fun found out that my pre amp tube was a little microphonic probly from shipping I went to my local small guitar shop mom and pop owned who happens to me a.MesaBoogie dealer and he said if I wanted to and had a couple dollars I should put a full complement of the matched Mesa power and pre amp tubes in, they are supposedly very high quality and very well tested I did that now it not only melts your face instantly it puts a hole right through your chest. I love This amp it does it all. Right Now I am learning a song which I always wanted to play for fun the boys are back in town by Thin Lizzy. The set up to match the song perfectly tone wise is a strat With Seymour Duncan hum buckers and a cord from guitar to amp that's it.

Mo Reina Think of an attenuator as a volume control for the speaker. When you overdrive your tube amp & with the attenuator set to decrease the speaker volume, you get the rich overdriven tube sound (by cranking your gain up along with your volume) but you can play at bedroom levels. The Dr Z. Air Brake lite is designed especially for combo amps. 👍🏻

trillrif axegrindor My thoughts exactly man. I'm kind of stunned really. I never until now even considered Marshall for a combo amp like this. Or for any other amp. Loads of bands I love use them, don't get me wrong, just, I don't know. Fuck.

Philip, excellent comparison. I have seen almost all your videos and I have enjoyed them a lot. One question, you did one video about guitar settings (the settings you use) do you have anything for basses? Thanks and keep going with the vids

I bought the DSL 40 back when I was playing les Paul's all the time. I recently build a strat, and started playing it frequently. So as you can imagine feedback has become an issue. I think if you have single coils, and the fact the the DSL 40 is a high gain amp, it's tolerable but it's not best suited.

Hey Phil I have both amps and in my experience the fender sounds better clean and the Marshall sounds better dirty. The biggest surprise I found was with gain pedals. Everyone talks about the fender being a great pedal platform but as far as gain overdrive pedals I found the Marshall to sound much better. The fender seems to have less frequency response. It almost sounds like AM radio. I may do a video on this. Great job Phil.

Since we're talkin about amps, whats the difference in a closed back vs open back cabinet.
@tricko2286
@tricko2286 7 жыл бұрын
Karl Beerman Closed back = more push, projection and thump/tightness -and- open back is more loose Speaker (no pressure to tighten the speaker) ambient and less harsh and projecting. Many closed back cabs can sound radically different when opened depending upon the situation. Closed back when you want to project sound and open for less direct more all around sound ambient sound.

Another amp to consider if you're interested in these is the Blackstar HT 40. Similar features to the DSL, but different sounds and more versatility. You can get a Fender style clean sound, classic crunch and that Blackstar distortion that many people (including me) really love and some apparently really hate.

Also the north american made Traynor. YCS50 is just unbelievable in head or combo under 900 US. Has both brit and USA modes and a great boost on the gain channel that you really notice on a single coil guitar.

My blackstar has a tube poer and preamp section, not sure what you are talking about. A lot like a marshall in tone, considering its former marshall employees.

The DSL 40C really comes into it's own once you swap the stock speaker out. I've found that a Celestion Creamback 65 is a GREAT pairing with this Marshall!

I have played Marshall's for years. Jcm series. But a couple years ago I bought a hotrod deluxe v3. And I love the clean channel. Sounds amazing. I though the distortion was alittle weak but with pedals. It's amazing. I actually sold my marshall and been playing this fender for everything. No regrets love it

a friend of mine plays in a rock band and he uses the fender hot rod deluxe III and loves it, like Phil said that thing takes pedals really well... my friend uses a Les Paul custom, it works great for him. however... I been contemplating a DSL40C for a while now, I think the price is good, the switch at the back to cut it to half power really helps if you wanna practice at home and not have to crank it up to crazy volumes in order to get great tone. I played that marshall countless hours at the local music store. .. I got familiar with the amp ( and the guys from the shop got familiar with me eheh) and I can honestly say it is a great option for anyone who wants a versatile amp, light (sort of) and not that expensive. it has some main sonic elements of the pure marshall tone we all know, but don't expect it to sound like a Bluesbreaker or a JVM ... rock on!

The Marshall’s clean channel seems to have a chime that the fender is missing. The Marshall’s overdrive is definitely the no contest winner over the fender. Not only does the fender not have enough gain for my taste I don’t care for the overall tone. I do agree however that the fender has a much better reverb. Thanks for the video! Keep up the good work. You definitely helped me to decide which amp I’m going to purchase next!

I was lucky enough to be able to purchase a Marshall DSL 40c about a year ago, which was a huge upgrade from a line 6 spider. Its a beautiful amplifier. I found that the marshall is great for any kind of classic marshall tones. Its a lovely warm amp. However i'm having trouble with finding a fat classic blues tone. Any thoughts? Love the videos.
