People have no idea what an outstanding and underrated musician Toy Caldwell was. And never with a pick.

He was fantastic. Great memories of a great band. Grew up in the 60's and 70's listening to and watching, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, Skynyrd, Allman Bros, Wet Willie, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Sea Level and Dixie Dregs. What a great time for music. Great southeastern bands that were fantastic, but never made it to the true big time were the likes of Locust Fork Band, Telluride, Hotfoot, the Mortals, among others.

R.I.P. Caldwell Brothers. True talent. While working backstage security in the mid 1970s, I met Tommy Caldwell when he came up to talk to me after the sound check. He asked me if I knew of their music, and I said, yes, I thought "Where We All Belong' was a great mix of country, blues, jazz and rock & roll. He seemed surprised that a Midwesterner knew of them. He convinced me to walk back to where their dressing room was, to have a beer and a sandwich, since, as he aptly put it, I "looked like a skinny college boy." I told him I was working, but he insisted I have a cold beer with him. Unable to resist, I had just cracked a cold one when the security supervisor turned the corner with Al Bashara, the promoter. Both gave me a look, and Tommy Caldwell put his arm over my shoulder and said, "Hey, I made him do it -- he's providing security for the band." The miracle was that I wasn't fired.

I went to school in the 70's...this was my theme song. All the girls I met, loved, left.... this was what got me through to the next week, day, girl. Soooo Thankful for the Caldwell Brothers and Marshall Tucker Band. Now, in my late 60's, I listen to this with my heart and soul, and tears in my eyes for the perfect sound they developed. The lyrics we exactly my life. So much fun, so much heartbreak, and so much promise for the next relationship....Thomas, Toy, Jerry, George, Chris, Stuart, Rick...thank you for a GREAT LIFE AND MUSIC...!

What a truly great band and unique sound. I loved their music from the first time I heard "Can't you see" and bought every album. What's really unique is that most of the original members were Viet Nam veterans who served their country, unlike most coward politicians today.

This was my favorite song. When Marshall Tucker came to Macon, Georgia in 1975, I was there to hear them and my favorite song. While they was setting up after the band before them I made a run to the restroom. When I got back to my seat they was already on stage performing. I waited for "This ol Cowboy".and never heard it. After the concert I told a friend I couldn't believe they didn't do my favorite song he said they did. It was the first song when they came on stage, I missed it.

This was my work philosophy for many years. I worked on a contract basis, and was no different than rental furniture. So when they needed a scapegoat, I was gone. Or when the job turned into a nightmare, from internal politics or whatever, I took it in stride and found something else in a few weeks. Work a week, and hit the road again was often like 3 or 4 months, but same idea. Or maybe it was "Take the Money and Run" because I did that. Bargain for high rates, since I knew most weren't going to last. I never kidded myself that they might want to hire me permanently. Well, several did, but only to cut my high rates down to cheap salaries. There is a tremendous amount of independence in this song.

Before retiring, I worked in both live sound & studio recording (small time, except for one gig for the first Pres. Bush). I say that to say this: for some strange reason, a few minutes ago, this song just popped into my head and I just had to hear it! However, the first two search results were the studio cut. I could not believe how awful the audio was! ...on BOTH of them! I don't remember it being that bad when I used to listen to the vinyl, so I suspect they were just poor dubs. The third option was this live cut, but if you're familiar with the audiophile preference for studio cuts over live cuts due to the poor audio quality of so many live recordings, you'll understand why I wasn't very hopeful. Obviously, I was happily surprised with the quality of the initial recording, AND the dub! Thank you for caring about good audio, and thank you for uploading this music that is near and dear to my heart, as it was part of the soundtrack of my "coming of age"! God bless!

This was my unforgettable experience at the New Haven Coliseum on July 14, 1979: A friend and I, who'd earlier in the day gone to the SunFest at Yale Bowl to see The Beach Boys, walked into the Coliseum in the late afternoon through the backstage/loading dock entrance and hid separately until ticket-holders started coming in. We had at least two hours to kill. At one point, I took a stroll. A Hell's Angels "security" goon saw me, got pissed off, and escorted me out. I was walking in front of that scary guy. At one point, just before we reached the exit, he hauled off and slugged me in the back of the head. It was vile and really hurt. I went straight to the Sheraton Park Plaza Hotel where the bands stayed and asked at the front desk for Marshall Tucker's manager. I was given a room number and told I could go up to see him. His name was Joe McConnell. I told him my story. He was so empathetic and angry. He told me "I'll take care of you. Let's go back there. I want you to show me the guy who attacked you." We went back shortly before Orleans ("Dance with Me" and "Still the One") came on stage to open. I found the gang member and pointed at him. He saw me do it. The manager then found the head thug of the Hell's Angels and demanded that the goon be kicked out of the venue. That was done. Then the manager gave me a great floor-seat ticket and a backstage pass. One of the worst things that ever happened to me turned out to the most moving experiences I've ever had in achieving justice.
