This is one of the greatest scenes in American cinema, and a total contrast from the Marx Brothers' usual verbal or musical comedy.

I hardly ever laugh at this scene. I am always in awe of the genius that this is.
@cautionTosser3 жыл бұрын
i get that. the timing for those pauses... that's dedication. Must almost be like music in their heads. "1, 2, 3 up high 4 5 6 down low..."
@premanadi3 жыл бұрын
@@cautionTosser It's filmed silently, so there is no doubt that the director was yelling out when to move...
@cautionTosser3 жыл бұрын
@@premanadi They also did this bit many times live. What you might be forgetting is that by the time they did movies they had already been honing their act on stage for many years and could probably do that bit blindfolded. Don't kill the magic. :)

Harpo is so adorable in this, especially when he breaks character. It's always a little strange to watch alone, since it's completely silent. It's meant to be seen in a cinema, surrounded by a crowd of people laughing hysterically.

The Marx Bros were my absolute favorites. Thx for this nostalgic treat of a scene. It still makes me laugh just as hard as I did the first time I watched it.

We did this recently at the American Humanist Conference as an ice-breaking exercise for children... as well as adults. Each partner took turns being the "leader", which the other tried to follow. It was fun, and I thought VERY effective at getting stuffy adults to laugh and play a little.

Brilliant. I love all their movies, but "Duck Soup" is my favorite. It's so funny, but it shines a spotlight on how wasteful government can be and the futility of going to war just because you can.

Marx bros did not create this bit. They just perfected it. It works because the bros look so much alike and were able to mimic each others facial expressions

The Pink Panther film with Peter Sellers and Robert Wagner copied this sequence in 1965 with the bear routine at the safe.

My only question is: how many takes were ruined by people laughing when they filmed this?
@julietcunningham8523 жыл бұрын
Probably none, as it was silent.
@feralbluee3 жыл бұрын
imagine the rehearsals on this? and a lot of counting. they were smiling a lot. maybe they did that so they wouldn’t break up laughing. :}
@hpa20053 жыл бұрын
@@feralbluee Agreed
@premanadi3 жыл бұрын
@@feralbluee since it was filmed silently, I expect the director was simply telling them exactly when to move, etc. They were total pros and I doubt they would have had a problem breaking up.

Stephen Lindloff I love the Marx bros and I understand what you mean.I have friends who watch this and they don't even budge,no laughing,no smiling,nothing.I don't get it.I find them hilarious,especially Groucho and Harpo.I find in today's world anything with lots of sex mixed into it is classified as "funny" I rather sharp wit and jokes/comebacks that are ingeniously clever,like the Marx bros!
