This was without a doubt the meanest swarm I've ever had the pleasure of accidentally dumping down my shirt. These are Italian honey bees as that is what the majority of our feral stock is in the US. They are not Africanized. I just picked the wrong time to make such a mistake. If I had shaken them onto a sheet they still would have been agitated but I may have only gotten stung a time or two if at all. I do recommend that anyone checking out a swarm or catching swarms take every precaution until you are sure they can be handled without someone getting hurt. Either that or send the swarm trapping legend Jeff Horchoff in to check them out first.
The smaller swarm I shook earlier in the day resulted in no stings and was handled pretty much the same way as the latter. The difference was the temperature and the time of day. Time and temperature play a pretty big role in beekeeping, even in when to do your hive inspections.
As with all my swarm catches I put these on lock down for 48 hours. I jokingly call this The Dirt Rooster Method because I never heard anyone else come up with a time of less than three days for this technique before I started doing these videos. Once in a while I'll do a two night lock down and not actually reach the forty eight hour mark. When I do I watch their reaction to being released to decide whether I want to close them back up or not.
Both these swarms did have queens and both are doing very nicely.
I do not take any medicine for these stings, not even benadryl. My body can handle a lot of stings and benadryl just makes me sleepy. Most people can build a pretty good resistance to honey bee stings over a little bit of time. Some viewers/commenters worry that some day my body may turn on me and suddenly be come allergic. I don't know of any beekeeper this has ever happened to so I don't even think about it.

The hive in my backyard swarmed today. Had a nice cluster of bees 30 feet up in a honeysuckle. We called the beekeeper and I helped him get them down with a bucket. Never stood in swarming bees like that before, soooo cool. Thank you so much for your videos, otherwise I would've been to scared to do it. It was so cool watching them march into the hive. I wasn't worried about getting stung, and only threw on a long sleeve shirt because my mother wanted me to. Had a blast. He's coming to get the box in the morning after the stragglers find their way in. Gotta love bees.

Love the videos. I've learned from an old beekeeper once that swarms are pretty docile unless they've been without a home for a while. He called them a dry swarm. He told me once they burn through their stores that they take with them when they leave the parent hive they can get more defensive. Hungry, tired, cold and homeless. That would make us pretty ornery too I suppose. Thanks for all your hard work!

I remember when my mom had a nice little hive in the little meter box under the ground in the front yard. Those little monsters never messed with momma. Could you believe she would talk to them as she watered her plants... The neighbors weren't too happy though. They called the city and they exterminated them. Mom and dad pulled a lot of honey out of the ground that day, they lamented it all went to waste since they sprayed poison on them. Momma cried for her bees the whole time... I mean it was definately sad because they never hurt momma but I wasn't allowed in that area cause they didn't like... But we live in AZ, so everyones scares they could have been Afrian killer bees

I live in Fort Worth but i think i got the sister to that Swarm about 2 weeks ago, I had to click the limb they were on to be able to get to them and i bumped the limb a little to hard and dropped them on my head and arm, i took 54 stings to my left forearm and another 10 random stings. I did the same as you and suited up to let them loose two days later but they were Very calm 2 days later. Thanks for another great video.

They tore you up. That is the very reason I suit up as much as I do... I got 72 stings the first time a buddy took me to "pick up a gentle hive". I'm slowly getting more comfortable without the suit, but they flat tore me up! Good vid.

Just a suggestion: I would cut the limb completely off, trim it up and lay the swarm cluster on top of the box. The tree or bush will bud and replace the vegetation. I know it is not your bush, but that is what I have done.

Just started watching your video's, I find your work very interesting. I have lived in the SE of the UK. for 25 years, I'm not a bee keeper, just a bee lover and advocate. I've seen the decline of bee's here, we need bee's and I volunteer to make bee boxes for our local parks. The bee's are so important and vital to our ecosystem, it's not just the honey, keep up your good work, i look forward to seeing more of your video's, very informative. .

57 degrees?!! You tryin' to turn into a Yankee? I left a catch too long in a swarm trap once, so they thought they owned it. Went back at night all suited up, backed the truck up...but the circular "door" on the trap was stuck on paint and wouldn't close. Grabbed the tire iron to help close it, it slipped off and banged the box. Out they came! Jumped down and ran. They got my ankle. The red headlamp I was wearing on my forehead ended up in my beard and I was blind. Good thing nobody saw me... That hive stayed nasty for a month and a half!

Thanks for posting. Great stuff as usual. I had to chuckle as it reminded me of a swarm catch I did last year. One of my own in my beeyard. Went in the box without a hitch. When I went back in the evening I attempted to lift box, hive bottom at all by myself instead of asking my husband for help. The box slipped sideways off the bottom, bees came out like gang busters and stung me up pretty well. LOL I've had bees for 5 years so you think I'd know better. Made me laugh thinking back on that. Dont think those bees ever forgave me. Mean as sin. Had to kill the queen and replace her.

Thank you for sharing your experiences, I had to remove my first swarm today, a little bigger than the size of basketball and just sitting on a branch about 12-15 feet off the ground. I put a cardboard box under the branch and gave it a good shake. I was surprised how heavy it was. I was able to get about 90% of the bees in the box and dumped the cardboard box in the hive body and the others just kept going into the hive body so I think that I may have gotten the queen. I just have no idea how you find the queen. I was just concerned with being covered with bees (they were sweet, didn't sting me once) and falling off the ladder and breaking my neck. The many tips you have given in the videos kept ringing in my head, so it was like you were there guiding me.

Ouch they got you good. Never trust a bee to react the same way, 9/10 may go as planned but it only takes that one time to put you in a lot of hurt. I like when beekeepers shows videos on "mistakes/fails or the unexpected" its not due to being sadistic or enjoyment of others getting hurt. What its about is that there is too many "clean" videos out there and i think ppl need to see both sides. Keep up the good work and stay raw!

Hey DirtRooster! Just wanted to let you know, you inspired me to do it! I bought my first hive today and pick up my nuc saturday morning! I am SOOO excited! thanks for the videos! I only have one question. How far must the hive be from foot traffic so they get used to us, but not annoyed with us( 2 of us). If it's less than 15', i can put them where we can see them, otherwise I will have to put them out in the field where there might be public foot traffic or vandals. I could also put it in a tree or on an old walk-in camper roof, but I wouldn't get to enjoy them. Insight* I live in Louisville Ky near the University campus. We have about 4 acres of meadow( down town! YAY!) and have sewn it with wild flowers and natives. We have also stocked it with toads, dragonflies, mantids , spiders, skinks, garter snakes and pretty much every other tiny critter you and I remember form childhood. There were none 19 years ago when we moved in, now they spawn every spring like country liv'n. ( with help from my garden hose and home depot credit card)The one thing missing is bees!! For some reason, honeybees are extremely rare here. I think because people have the hives destroyed, or they pickup pesticides/herbicides. Which reminds me, how about a video on managing sick bees from poisons and such.Anyhow, Thank you so much for the inspiration. ps. say it's 15' !!!

He stated that maybe the main nest was in the wetlands. Is it possible that those would have been killer bees. I have heard they do not handle low temps well and he said that he had never had them react like that before so I was thinking maybe the colder weather had them a little sluggish otherwise it may have been a lot worse?

a friend found a hive in a cut tree today. I went to inspect it and found it was 4 ' long, 1 ft diameter with 7-9 rows of comb at both cut ends. I figure about 50-80 thousand bees and suspect it is immediately too many for my 1 deep, also I suspect I would never get the queen and really have no idea how to recover a hive from a 300lb log. Should I just leave it for a more experienced keeper, or just pull the comb out and rubber band it.? The bees are beutiful bright honey color with brown stripes, not the usual dark colored we have here. I do not see any drone or queen cells, but i do see drones walking. will they just leave in a few days or is the hive doomed?

I don't know anything, but what I read somewhere is that the danger is cumulative and that someday a sting could be your last.
@628DirtRooster
@628DirtRooster 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of people seem to believe that but I've yet to see any proof. In what I've personally seen it's exactly the opposite. I hardly have any reaction any more. I was stung three times in the face Sunday night. There was no swelling y Monday evening there was no evidence of the stings. Every beekeeper that I personally know has less and less reaction over time.

You mention keeping them "locked up". I have caught the same swarm from the same tree trunk three times over the course of 2 days. Third time I locked them in and after 2 days, they are still calmmering to get out. My box has 7 frames of foundation and 1 frame drawn comb. I've had several swarms this spring in NC and I've heard opinions about secondary swarms being headed up by virgins. Based on your experience, what do you think might be going on with the girls that don't want to live in this nice box I've given them. I wouldn't mind getting them off a limb, but I sure am tired of getting them off the trunk of that tree!!!! Your thoughts?

i never had any experience with bees, i had a problem with wasps once. they had a nest in my crawl space about the size of 2 beer cases in the floor joists, i waited until winter -30 below (minnesota) then i removed the nest and sealed the access. never had another problem after that.

628DirtRooster I used to be able to bench press 200 pounds when I was 15, not bad for a girl. Was a competitive weightlifter in high school, one of the things I really miss now I'm chronically sick. But all the muscles I built back then have largely stuck around until recently when I lost about 20 pounds. Nearly all leg muscle from not being able to walk much. Wish I could go climbing again, I miss being able to get up a crag.

Damn, thats some pissy ladies. In you description you say you have never heard of a beekeeper becoming allergic after time; I have. But with a twist; he had stopped beekeeping for about 4 years. When he got back into it he had major reactions to stings. Not the throat swelling type so much and he swelled up and it looked like he had shingles or hives. Super bad rash. Also my mentors wife wasn't allergic to bees but after time she had allergic reactions to the venom that was on his suit when he came home at night. Kinda strange. Anyway keep up the god work. Oh and I like the 48 hour lock-up you do.

Funny I've had two different beekeepers this week tell me they had a reaction from a sting on the ear. Both had similar reactions. Both broke out in hives and one of them felt nauseous. It appears to have been a one-time event.

That is wierd. I once got a small rash on the inside of my arm from a sting (I hadn't been stung for 2 months as they were in winter storage). But just like them, it has only happened once.
