I know for a fact this was the coldest Christmas I have ever known having been born and raised in Louisiana. And if it was cold for me, I can just imagine how cold it was for my bees. Thanks for the cold weather update info, Ed! I am a small operator with 8 hives just south of Houston. After cold weather inspection, found no dead bees but apparently two colonies had absconded. Bummer. Keep up the good work!

For me, the size of a beekeepers operation is no way as important as the fact they are a beekeeper at all. I will always say the world needs as many beekeepers as it can get, and you my friend are doing your part. Sorry to hear of the absconded hives, but come Spring time, you will recover easily. Thanks for that off road experience. Man, that's a looong ways back there. Don't want to forget anything when you're working those. Those warm natured cozy southern bees need a blanket! LOL That abscond probably moved to Gulfport to stay with Dirt Rooster. Harr. Man, those ants, hate those things. When I see them like that, I grab my little torch I light my smoker with and it wipes them out fast. That's a cool shot of those bees on the Maples. I've never seen that before. I never thought about torching the ants, but I love the idea. I guess a propane tank will be in my tool box starting next year. Besides, what guy does not like a good fire? Mr. Ed I just pulled a bottom insert today up here in South Central PA and there were two hive beetles. In another hive there were ants on the inner lid... We had -19 degree temps for days with that artic freeze - Today temps are in the low 50's those pests survived the artic blast just fine! Also have white fly in a poly tunnel and they are doing just fine as well so its not only honey bees that can survive the bitter cold!

I absolutely love my layens hive. My girls stayed warm and cozy all winter so far. When we thawed out from the deep freeze the only thing they were after was water. So far both of my hives are fine

That was awesome to see the bees up in that tree. That's a real treat in itself. And your numbers are great in the bee yard especially since you've done nothing to prepare them for winter. You have blessed hands for sure. I don't feel bad that I've seen a few big wood roaches in a couple of my hives. Mostly between the glass, the insulation and the door to the observation window on my top bar hives. So not actually inside the hives. I have seen alot of pollen coming in almost every day my girls are out flying here on the east coast of VA. Glad that cold snap went out to sea.

I loved seeing your excitement over your bees making it through that cold snap. I am a first year keeper, and have three horizontal hives in SW Missouri, we got down in the negative numbers for several days straight. I was super excited to see my ladies flying the first day it warmed up. All three hives made it through. I know we have a bit longer than you to go to get through the winter, but my oh my was it thrilling to see them going about their bee business! I learned the hard way in our cold snaps and snow that bees don’t move sideways, I have lost hives that had plenty of honey on the sides of the hives but the bees died in the cluster, we r at least 6 months from swarm cells

Seeing the bees working that red maple is a beautiful site. Good to see they survived the cold blast. Mine did as well...I'm a bit surprised as we had minus 8°F temps with minus 40°F windchills and I didn't insulate them as I had in prior winters -- but all of mine from the past couple of years are from feral stock now, so that could play a part.

Have seen a few people keep beehives here in North Central Indiana and the winters sometimes gets bad kinda like this time we seen -30/-45 temps with windchill and dam thats cold but the bees survive the keepers take these blankets n wrap around the hives to help keep em extra warm n then they feed em also I'm sure

Mr. Ed, I lost a small NUC but am not worried because most of my hives all have some activity even when it was -8F and some people had frozen pipes. I tried to build up the bees in the fall, most are new hives and I wrapped some that were still a little weak. If a few bees don't make it, will start over in April, at least there is some drawn foundation to work with.

Winter STARTED officially on Dec 21 and eight days later you have maple trees blooming and bees working the blooms. Wow, that is amazing. The rest of us have months of cold ahead.

I’ve always felt nature wise that the winter solstice was more a halfway point of winter. It’s never felt like the beginning of a season here in East TN but more a halfway point so I can so see it being even closer for spring farther south like Mr Ed is.

We had a bit of cold weather, down in the teens for a bit, wrapped and fed them before the cold spell, had a nice warm day so I went out and checked them, evey one was dead. No larva no eggs just dead bees,, plenty food. Made me sick to see that, I have no idea either.

So sorry for your loss of bees, it is a real heart breaker. I have found to console the loss, the fact that you have drawn comb and resources in it, all that is needed to get the hive going again is some more bees, and that's a lot easier task than starting from scratch. God's peace Karen. Mr. Ed

Thanks for this video. I'm inspired to go check my hives. I have just 3. A double that has been so strong and 2 singles that I worry may have succumbed prior to us getting the insulation wrapped around them during this storm. We'll be checking them this afternoon to see how they weathered the storm. I hope we have at least the one left. Temps dropped 40° in a matter of hours. Hope and pray my girls survived!

Update: all 3 hives are doing well! I was amazed at the girls in each of the single boxes. We had to open all the hives in -8°, with 40mph wings to put inner cover insulators and wrapped the boxes. I stuck my ear to them and heard nothing, so I was convinced they were dead then. Praise God, they lived!

Mug up from central NH, where it is about 15F above the historical average. we are at 32F with temperatures predicted to be above freezing for the weekend and to raise about 50F next week. We did not get the bitter cold that most got, relatively speaking...this is New Hampshire, and they say, don't like the weatha', wait a minute and it will change. Ah ya. Most of you folks thought, got a bitter taste of winter. I hope the rest of the winter is a little more stable. Red maple starts blooming around here around the first or second week of March, normally. Thanks for sharing, always a pleasure, Happy new year, may your bees fly long and far. Peace

For me, living down here… it’s not about the cold, it’s that we can do so little about it. No snow removal equipment, nothing to de ice a highway or overpasses etc… the houses aren’t insulated that well. Then again, my winter clothes look like new for YEARS!

Here in NY I had -40 below zero and wind up to 40-50 it's been years since we had anything like that ... But I had strong hives and next thing I know is it's full of carpenter ants and I seen where ants steal bee larva

I have never seen the ants inside of the hive, only on the inner cover. However, I bet if things got bad enough, and the bees could not hold them off, it could very well happen. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Those bees do have a great heating system. They probably keep their internal temp about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than outside, right?

From what I have read, the internal temp of a cluster is around 55 F, and it is almost independent of the actual temp outside....within reason. I guess you would have to ask someone who really knows the answer, I'm not very knowledgeable about that issue. God's peace Lorraine. Mr. Ed

11:25 Will the cocoon be all right after being jarred & shaken? ~ 11:36 What was the creature with the long tail on the upper-left of the hive? ~ I am SO glad you & your bees are doing well, Jeff! 2 out of 23 is VERY good! I am picturing the bees going to the hive to do the waggle-dance, telling the others where to find nectar. The others are saying, "Are you KIDDING?!?" Good to see they found it before the new weather front arrives!

I'm pretty sure the larva in the cocoon will be fine, after all, I did nothing to it to harm it. Just a lizard hanging around the hive looking for a meal. They do eat bees from time to time, but mostly feast on roaches and other insects that take up residence in a hive. Happy New Year to you Steven. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff I am glad about the larva. One time my Weekly Ride gave me a WONDERFUL surprise. A plastic container with a lot of milkweeds...and a LARGE caterpillar! I watched the caterpillar eat, hang from the lid in the J~Shape, spin the cocoon & emerge as a monarch butterfly! JUST as the butterfly came out of the cocoon, I set her on my arm so she could dry out. I did some work on my computer & was able to watch her open & close her wings. When she was moving them faster, I headed out to the balcony & sat on the chair. The butterfly flew up to my face to "kiss" me, then flew off! I really feel like she knew I had taken good care of her. When I saw your cocoon, all those happy memories flooded back. Thank you! ~ A lizard? Wow! That's a small one! What kind?
