Why did they give different behaviors to each minigame when it comes to ending timers and mechanics? I guess every minigame is coded separately, but it would've been a lot more time-efficient to copy-paste the same code for all of them...

could be early installment weirdness, some of them they just likely didn't want people being able to hinder their teammates or whatever, there's probably reasoning for some of it if you sat down and examined every case like that'd have had to.

probably coded for 2 outcomes. end immediately or let the players reset for show. this works just fine allowing games you dont need character resets to end faster but they realized some games could be softlocks so they coded in the timer after only wasting time to add it to levels they thought might be an issue.

Programmers don't often copy-and-paste large swathes of information. They write a script for a process once, and then add coding in a lot of places for that script to be activated. That way if the process needs to be edited, only the single script needs to be edited and you don't need to locate every since time it was copied to edit that part.

My sister and I had a softlock in Grab Bag in Mario Party 2. Wario kept spinning in place after the game ended, and, unlike the example in the video, we waited for 5 minutes or so, and the game never progressed.

I know this is a softlock Mario Party video but will you do a video on Mario Party game crashes? One game crash happens in Mario Party 1 with Key pa way if you time either your key pass or open the door when the timer hits exactly zero. I thought that tidbit might help for your next video.

Wow, I just remembered that when I was little I used to make Mario Kart 64 crash. It used to involve Battle mode 2 players, Toad, Wario, Block Fort, and Wario doing a Rocket Start, hitting Toad three times without touching the stick, making it lose its three balloons, then instead of game results appearing the game would crash. Crashing N64 games sounds like a very interesting subject.

@@Yntec. I played Paper Mario because it is a spiritual successor to Mario RPG, and it was… different. Mario RPG was more Epic, while Paper Mario has more charm in a way. They're great games, but nowadays I think Paper Mario The Thousand-Year Door (NGC) is the best one so far

For Coconut Conk, what if you recreated the trick, but you had the 2 other players blocking the barrel player so then the controlled character cannot hit the barrel player, soft locking the game?

The game ends when all 3 characters up top face the camera, I imagine it remains the case when the character in the barrel hasn't been hit. In that clip of the soft-lock somehow Peach was initially prevented from facing the camera, which semi-broke the game.

I have a thought about the differing softlock timers; is it possible that the timer counts from the start of the minigame and the apparent difference is because different minigames have different regular timers?

He's counting how long it takes for the Soft-Lock Timer to count down from the moment the mini-game would've ended, not how long the Soft-Lock Timer lasts for (which would require watching the games memory to know when it starts counting)

Assuming that streamer only "fixed" the softlock by hitting the lone player again... would it not be possibly to truly softlock the game by triggering this player swap glitch but with the other 2 characters blocking the spots needed to hit the player?

If you don't hit the player in the barrel than the team of 3 will lose. The "soft-lock" isn't a soft lock because you just need to make sure all 3 characters up top face the camera (which the person in the clip took a while to do).

8:00 I'm not sure if this applies in Mario Party 2, but in Mario Party 3, I was able to get Wario stuck in the same place in the watering a plant battle game. After about 15 seconds, it played the ending like normal but with Wario in an unintended spot.

I'm not 100% sure if I'm right or wrong here, but the differing results may have been caused because the mini games were coded by small teams that were told to make a few mini games each to help reach a deadline. One team thought it'd be a good idea to add a soft lock timer, one thought it'd probably be a good idea to simply end the games straight away. Maybe the other teams either thought that it couldn't happen, or didn't even know what soft locks were.

I enjoy this video, this kind of thing is addicting to watch. Could you possibly remove some of the silent parts at the end of your lines for future videos? There are many pauses throughout, some several seconds long, like at 2:06. Many audio editing programs can remove empty air automatically.

As a child in MP2's grab bag I got a mario and a DK stuck on each other (one trying to get to top left and the other trying to get to bottom right) and it softlocked because they could not get in their positions. had to reset.

I'd be curious to know if any of the games get stuck when all players are off the ground. Even though that wouldn't be possible without cheats, it'd be one small bit more info on the game mechanics. Does it sometimes check for all players on the ground and other times just 1 player?

So my crazy theory on that Coconut Conk nonsense, based on the way it ended, it seems like the game can't end properly unless the three players all face the screen exactly. You'll notice Peach does not face the screen when they hit Waluigi. My only guess is that the developers implemented a failsafe where in the event a CPU player does not face the screen at the end of the game, they gain control of them and can face them towards the screen to end the minigame. That's the only reason I can think of for why they gained control of Peach and why them completely facing the screen ended the minigame.

I know you know this but just for others being in the other categories does not mean it is 100% impossible to soft lock with said games its just extremely unlikely baring you do something that massively breaks a line of code befor the minigame ends causing the soft lock timer to not even start its count down.
