Probably the West hasn't heard of Chongqing. More than 10 yrs ago, I had already heard of Chongqing and after I went to Chengdu, I just hopped onto a high speed train to Chongqing which is just next door. In Chongqing, you can be both at the ground floor and at the 15th storey, that's how confusing it can get because of the way the entire city was built on mountains. Now of course it's very much developed than it was before.

Saying Chinese people "working hard" is not exactly the correct term in my opinion because it is dismissal. I think it's the culture thing. Chinese people are just more responsible...it is like it's their duty and responsibility to get things done. They're not lazy like most westerners. I, being Chinese living in America and I can testify that most westerners are lazy and like to take the easy way out. They like shortcuts. They like taking positions where they can direct people to do the work, rather than them doing by themselves. So, if you give them complicated work, they start to whine and complaint and even cry (yes, I witnessed one lady crying at my job). But as I look around, I seen my Asian brothers and sisters just doing their work and never complaint. That to me, it's a culture thing and that's just a snippet of the Asians here in US. But imagine an entire country of China working together? Nah, you can't beat that.

There is no one in this world who doesn't want to be lazy, and no one who doesn't want to get something for nothing. The Chinese are the same. But what makes Chinese people work hard? The first reason is the same as why Westerners work, people need money to live. The second point is that you mentioned that Chinese people are more responsible. Of course, whether you are in the West or the East, you are responsible for your work. but If you know Chinese history, you will know their underlying logic.Thousands of years ago, people believed that every man has a share of responsibility for the fate of his country(天下兴亡匹夫有责).There are many similar ideas like this and they are still clearly documented. I know that in ancient Western countries have philosopher kings, but I don’t think the idea of philosopher kings is rooted in the blood of every Westerner. The ancient Chinese even proposed a doctrine similar to communism(天下大同), which I think was earlier than Marx. There are too many similar doctrines. In summary, this is a cultural difference.

Here in Victoria bc, the capital, a ONE-way trip on a city bus (forget mass transit-doesn't exist here), is Can $2.50. So a single round trip, is 5 dollars. In the downtown core, there is hardly an intact bus shelter. They are quite small, consisting of 2 short metal benches and the damaged shelter. The buses themselves however, are in good order and are modern and the drivers professional-credit where due. All diesel however, so they are loud and do pollute. Public spaces are a mixed bag. Some spots are 'ok', a lot of others are often have lots of litter, homeless, drug users, or are in soso state of repair and cleanliness. This type of thing is common across the entire nation. Infrastructure is often dated, in poor repair, dirty, not particularly safe (ymmv), and is often not very extensive or integrated into...anything really. IN Canada, public spaces and infrastructure could be characterized as small islands of very variable quality, disconnected from much of anything, except car sprawl. In China from what I am seeing, public spaces and infrastructure are connected and often quite extensive in scope and scale. Iow, liveable. Here public works are often dirty at best, or not very appealing or dated dangerous at worst.

The Yangtze Delta is NOT here. It refers to the region on the east coast of China, including Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, etc. However, you're right that Chongqing lies in the upper stream of the Yangtze River (Changjiang River in Chinese). Regarding the working force, very sadly, China has 1.4 billion people to feed. The labor force exceeds the need and thus the labor is not as valued as in the West. The workers are obviously more exploited
