When I was turning 50, I had to beg my doctor to get a screening. She told me that typically they don't screen until you turn 65. I pleaded with her, since both my mother and aunt had severe osteoporosis, and even offered to pay for the screening out of pocket. I was finally able to get a dexa scan, which my insurance (mostly) covered, and it showed osteoporosis in my lumbar spine (-3.3). Without any further testing, all she did was call in a prescription for Fosamax to my pharmacy. I changed doctors after that, and started a targeted nutrition and exercise program. It seems to me that since they compare you to the "average" 30 year old, no matter how old you are when tested, that they should give you a baseline screening at age 30. If I had had that, I might have done things differently. At age 70, my bones are much stronger - my lumbar spine is just barely in the osteoporosis range, and my hip values are "normal."

You never went on the bisphosphonates?
@Nancy-sj7yg
@Nancy-sj7yg 23 күн бұрын
@@cindysharp4466 only briefly. I resisted at first, since I didn't want to go that route. Then I got a foot injury and couldn't exercise as much as I needed to. But the drugs only got me to about -2.9 in my lumbar spine, and when I went off I started to backslide. But I haven't been on bisphosphonates for 15 years and have made much more progress without drugs, thanks to proper nutrition, exercise, and targeted supplements.

I went thru menopause at 42. I was vegan for two years. Didn't watch protein intake, and no weight bearing exercise. At 66, I was given a Dexa, and surprise - I had osteoporosis. And, of course offered bisphosphonates, with no other options, since that is what insurance paid for. You would think that my doctor would have given me a bone scan much earlier in life, don't ya think? Duh!!! The covid years initially taught me NOT to trust the medical establishment. I've since taken my health into my own hands, conduct my own research, and realize that the for profit medical system is broken.

My new Gyn doctor found out I had a foot stress fx and ordered a Dexa scan. i am 71. I have osteoporosis in a femoral neck, normal spine, and osteopenia in hips. She asked me what I wanted to be on and I said I have no idea , what was Sally Field on? She said Boniva and wrote my rx. When asked what should I do she said "don't fall." I was freaked out and found this website, ordered Dr Doug's book, and watch every video. I recently saw my endocrinologist (thyroid) and asked if she would help me. She liked everything I was doing with supplements, diet, and exercise and said no meds yet. Also recommended a PT place that teaches exercise for osteoporosis that I will join in the fall. Dexa next year to see what I have accomplished on my own. She also told me I should not worry about a fall with the femoral neck reading at - 2.7. I feel like I am in good hands. Thank you Dr. Doug for all the wonderful information you give us!! oh and I took ONE dose of Boniva before I said NO more.

I'm 76 and was diagnosed around 50. I encouraged my daughter before she was 50 to talk to her doctor because my mother also had oestoporsis. She was told they don't test until she turned 50. The doctors were shocked how bad her scores were. It very frustrating to to get doctors to listen to the family history

Thank you for this video. I am 70 and was diagnosed with osteoporosis 6 years ago. I have yet to find a doctor that will work with me regarding my osteoporosis - they all want to use the typical drugs. I have also been very focused on looking for a functional doctor in my area because I do not want those typical drugs that are pushed. I would rather go the natural/holistic approach. I live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and you would think there would be plenty functional doctors here but I have not been able to find them on the internet. I love watching your videos and learn so much from them.

Yes, the health care system in Canada should do testing at age 55, close to mesopause and all doctors should be doing counselling on good bone health and proper diet If they do this they will save millions in health care

I was diagnosed in my 30’s. I could not explain all I have been through in my life due to my osteoporosis. In brief I had 40 bone breaks during 30’s, 40’s, 50’s you would be appalled if I explained my experiences to you. The Bisphosphenates(?) it damn nearly destroyed my esophagus until I refused to take it any longer. It was never going to help anyway based on the way bones are formed. Anyway you know all that. Through all those years I had to do all my own research since doctors knew almost nothing about a disease I was not supposed to have until I was 65. If you wish to talk with me please leave a office contact #. By the way I had cancer with total radical Hysterectomy or Salpingo Opherectomy. Please excuse the spelling I have forgotten the proper spelling this was done at age 22 I am now 78. The best one was the doctor’s parting words to me was “Osteoporosis isn’t painful anyway”! I really do not blame doctors. The general impression back in the 1970’s, 80’s and forward this was still a old lady disease.

Bless your heart! I am so sorry to hear this. I was diagnosed with stage 4 a couple months ago. Shocked!!! I asked my Dr why didn't we see this coming? I'm 74, healthy as a horse....or thought so. Active, no medications, etc. He said I guess we should have done the test!!!! Then he said the standard of care recommends that Dr's do the bone density test at age 70. But he didn't mention it when I was 70. Fell this winter...three fractures in pelvis, two in my face, and fractured femur. No meds for me...trying exercise and vitamins. Getting older and facing this is complex and disheartening to say the least. So evidently I've had it for year! Good health to you Marianne. Carolyn

In my opinion with what I know now, I think bone strength and quality education should start with pediatricians and go through the lifespan, not wait until one fractures. A baseline DEXA or REMS should be done at age 30, not 65, to compare to oneself, not a random pool of 30 years olds when the patient is 65. PE classes in schools should have programs on healthy eating and activities to build strong bones. There should be more time given on educating med students on osteoporosis. When I was in Physical Therapy school in the mid 1990s, there was barely a mention of osteoporosis. Doctors need to be more aware of the importance of the lab tests, including bone markers, and how to identify if a parathyroid issue is the cause. I was failed when I asked for BHRT after my complete hysterectomy at age 51 and was told that I had to "tough out the symptoms" without it. I asked for a DEXA at that time and was told none was needed until I was 65. Once I finally had a DEXA at age 59, my doctors passed me around to others because no one wanted to address osteoporosis. When I finally go to an endocrinologist, she told me that she knew exactly why I was losing bone and that she did not need to do any testing. She told me I needed Prolia immediately. When I did not comply due to wanting testing performed, she threw her clipboard at me and stormed out of the room. I went to another endocrinologist who only did some of the tests and told me to just pick what medicine I wanted. I went to a different doctor who was an internal medicine specialist who now specializes in osteoporosis. Despite her being certified in BoneFit, she told me exercise (and diet) do not help, that I needed to be on Prolia. This was an 18-month journey that then had me begging my gynecologist for BHRT. She said she cannot prescribe it for osteoporosis but will give it to me if I am having menopause symptoms. I did have some symptoms, so she prescribed the lowest dose of estradiol and said she will never give me any more than that. She refused to test my hormone levels, stating there was no need since I was not trying to get pregnant. Yes - look at the cost of all the doctor visits in this 18-month journey as well as being failed along the way. Thank you for what you do.

Yes!! I’ve been a nurse for 35 years( and counting). I couldn’t agree more. I’m 57 and asked for a dexa scan. I had a comminuted tib/fib fracture at age 45 from a cycling accident. I was given a dexa scan back in 2009 upon referral of my primary physician. I was a healthy 52 year old and very busy with work. I never got a call about the results and I forgot about it. For the next 10 years I went for checkups and the physician (who had access to my results - large physicians group) never brought them up and didn’t refer me for another dexa. At the age of 62, a different physician in another group referred me for another dexa. The results were sent to my primary and I got a call from that office telling me I had severe osteoporosis. The nurse also let me know that the first dexa (back when I was 52) had shown that I had osteopenia. I was shocked that they had never mentioned it and never referred me for a follow up dexa. Fortunately I have never had a fracture (turning 65 in a month )

I totally agree. I should have been scanned by age 60 at least. Wasn't. Broke my hip at 67, no mention of osteoporosis. Five years later, I saw the doctor for pain in my other hip and was finally scanned and diagnosed. I was prescribed a bisphosphonate, which I declined to take and am now doing what I can to improve the situation. I shouldn't even have been prescribed the drug prior to another expected hip replacement. Had I been diagnosed at 60, I would have been all over it to stop the bone loss. I might never had suffered a fracture. Doctors just have no idea of what to do about osteoporosis.

I had a compression fracture at T7 six months ago. That is how I was diagnosed with osteo. In spite of my mother being crippled by fragile bones and my requests for a BMD test I was told I had to wait until I was 65. I had my fracture at age 64 and was told then I could have an early BMD test. Sadly it takes about a year to get one. This is in Canada.

I broke my left hip when I hit a patch of ice while cycling at age 30. The surgeon pinned the fracture and I was cleared for running two months later. Then a year later, I leaned forward (slipped) and broke my big toe. By Dr. Doug's definition, I should have been diagnosed and treated for osteoporosis at that time. But I'm glad I didn't get treated with the bone drugs because I am still active at age 71 in spite of several more fractures over the years. The bone drugs interfere with bone remodeling and all my fractures have healed up nicely. I am skeptical of a lot of what I read about bone health.

I agree with almost everything you've said, Dr Lucas. I'm a major proponent of participatory patienthood; as you said, I wouldn't be on this channel if I weren't. I have fast internet access. I have a doctorate so I know how to search for studies and can work through their statistics, even if it takes me several readings. *But I am not medically trained.* I can read the studies, but I don't know how to apply them to my own clinical condition. I don't even know if my understanding is correct. I cannot offer a medical opinion. If a doctor gives me *medically advised* options, I can make a decision based on my *personal values* system. Perhaps I want to explore pharmaceutical treatment; perhaps I want to go with different treatment options. Perhaps I can afford a certain treatment; perhaps I can't. But I need medical advice to start. Please don't judge me if I don't know where to start with my research, how to understand it, how to evaluate it, and what the research means in a clinical setting. I am fortunate that I discovered your channel; have taken your masterclass; am working through the bone health course. There are many people who can't do this, for many different reasons. I get you don't want to disparage doctors, and even if you did want to, you have professional obligations that constrain it. But please don't blame patients for not being sufficiently proactive. That's like blaming a fish for not being able to climb trees.

I am deeply grateful for your expertise and explanation of these studies. I find it daunting to understand by reading these studies without your input and explanation. I was very sad and shocked when diagnosed a few months ago at age 59. I was early menopause mid 40s and feel it would have been valuable to have learned the things you are teaching now and how I might have had the opportunity to make a difference then. I was given an RX for a Bisphosphonate derivative, which after reading about gave a strong "HELL NO" thought. In my case my FRAX score is not high, if reading this I urge you to not go by my disapproval of the drug, talk to your Doctor. Cancer runs ramped through my family. I am now empowered to learn that this is a condition I can make a difference with lifestyle changes, big ones in my case but I am worth it. I am excited to do the master class this week.

So true! I’ve been diagnosed for about 20 years. No one ever told me more than ‘take this dangerous drug’ or ‘take Calcium’ (failing to mention dose or adding D3 and K2) or ‘do weigh-bearing exercise’ (whatever that means). Only now am I discovering on my own about proper diet and actual exercises to truly prevent worsening or to reverse. The question is am I too late to make a difference? Perhaps I can at least maintain my current condition. 🙏

Had back pain after a horse incident. Went to a Neurologist and had X-rays. The Radiologist said no fractures. The Neurologist did not like that answer so she ordered an MRI. The results showed 3 fractures. Dr. Doug, are you Licensed in South Dakota?

I was diagnosed last year ( I’m 70). I walked into my Doctor’s office, she told me I had Osteoporosis, closed her computer and walked out. I was so upset I went home and cried. I live in a small town in the mountains of Arizona and there is no one here that can help me. I’m still so fearful im afraid to move at all. I tried the drugs but they made me sick.

I just got diagnosed with osteoporosis for my knee pain. I asked the orthopedic doctor if the cause was bc of my very low vitamin D levels. It took me 8 months to find this out through a blood test. He said Vitamin D does not cause cartilage loss. I don’t believe his response.

It can be worked out by oneself. Have awareness of ones own body. Change diet, get off the sugar, have not too many carbs, meditate, think positive. Let worry, the past go. Dont give up or give in. Check side effects of all drugs, are drugs really needed? exercise as much as can. All this helps.

I was diagnosed early due to family history. Even went to Rheumatologist who recommended recommended evenity injunctions for 1 yr. Ins was pre approved. Ins paid for Dec, Feb, March injections but refused Jan. Dr sent all nessissary chart notes, test results ect....We contesed + reviewed by insurance MD + still refused to pay. Obviously insurance would rather pay for fracture + all that it entails ....Obviously we can't afford $4000 per month for Evenity. It's BS

I was diagnosed at 56 after an OBGYN noted that I’m at risk because I’m thin and asked me to take calcium till iam 65. Talking with my HMO GP I found out I could have a DEXA scan. I was referred to Rheumatology. The doctor seemed confused, gave me a menu of options that went from doing nothing, weight lifting,taking supplements and adding Fosomax. A few questions I asked she was googling the answer right in front of me. Refused to order turnover markers and I still can’t find out how to order them myself. Time is passing as I gather information and I ask myself, will I I have to do another Ph.D., this time on osteoporosis, to get the proper treatment?

Yes. I have a PhD and that is exactly the time and energy this has taken to just get decent info to base decisions on. You have to read through the research yourself to validate or invalidate what you hear and what is recommended by providers. It’s criminal that your health is often at risk when you see a provider.

Find a holistic doctor. If you have an OsteoStrong in your area they usually have information on doctors that can order test kits for P1NP and CTX. That’s how I found one. So blessed that Dr. Doug recommended OsteoStrong. 🥹

@@deepcover9894 Well, I am going to find out. I'm a physician and can order it for myself, so I immediately went back on them after a compression fracture and finding out that I have osteoporosis. I took HRT for two years from age 52-54, then came the WHI and all the malarkey about estrogen being deadly, so I went off. Turns out, estrogen is crucial for bone health. I am back on both estradiol and micronized progesterone. Two months now, so far, so good, except my tits feel like they are going to explode! Sorry, TMI. The only thing I need now is to get some testosterone cream, as that will help, too, but it's a controlled substance. That's my next plan. I am almost 69.

I was diagnosed at age 45 due to hand pain. ( have had falls and not stopped skiing or sailing big boats in the interim, did fracture ribs with the largest fall but no fracture just horrendous bruising in a fall down the ladder in the boat. ) I am 77 now . Was on Fosamax for 20 years - taken off it at age 65. No therapy until a compression fracture at age 76. Took only Physical therapy since I refused surgery, steroid shots, Kyphoplasty and all the rest, and had a chest brace for 8 weeks started my Prolia 5 months after fracture , was only taking Calcium and Vit D3, K2 until then. Had yearly Dexa scans from age 45 til now. It’s been going on 2 years come August since the fracture and still have pain but work through it. My last Dexa in Dec showed the Prolia was at least keeping things stable - not building.

Kyphoplasty is really the way to go with a fracture that is amenable to it. It really helps with pain. Only problem is there are no long term studies about how it holds up.
@huskymom234
@huskymom234 21 күн бұрын
@elenanyhan4490 - actually I am retired RN from a hospital Interventional Radiology Suite that did Kyphoplasy - studies have shown that they reduce pain in the near term - however we saw patients come back with fractures above and below the repair time after time. Since the original repair made that level stronger the surrounding vertebrae were subjected to more stresses than they had prior to repair making them by comparison ever so much weaker and mush more subject to fracture
@elenanyhan4490

@@huskymom234 That makes sense, similar to having back surgery at one level and then eventually needing surgery above and below that first level.
