Calcium gets in heart valves too! I'm an echocardiography tech. I had a 50 something year old patient recently with significant valve calcification. I asked about calcium supplementation to which she replied, yes, for years! Doesn't prove causation, but it gave me the willies.
@nmandowa
@nmandowa Ай бұрын
I think this is a far more complex question, and also more individually assessed than just one equals the other. I've been taking MCHA calcium for many years, plus I eat dairy. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis years before menopause. After my first three months on the supplements plus walking around the steep hills of San Francisco, I came home to a dexa that showed increased density without taking drugs. Now at 76, I've lost some of that gain, though still taking the calcium. But my C-score is just 1.
@elenanyhan4490
@elenanyhan4490 Ай бұрын
It's not that simple. You don't ingest calcium and then it goes and sticks on your heart valves!! It's the whole mix of macro/micronutrients a person ingests. Trans fats, simple carbs, processed foods, etc., cause oxidation and resultant calcification in many parts of the body. Being a male, smoking, having diabetes, and hypertension are also risk factors. Your oversimplification doesn't do anybody any good, as 800 mg of calcium seems to help prevent heart disease in general. You are correct, a woman with calcified valves didn't get them from calcium supplements. Your willies were unfounded.

Hi Dr. Doug, long time fan. This is your first video that has me a bit concerned about your advice. Many people below have asked about the wisdom of using a supplement with Strontium which can artificially improve DEXA results leading one to believe the bones are stronger than they are. There are more thumbs up on those questions than any other comments. Strontium seems to be the "magic" ingredient in Algeacal. I really think this needs to be addressed fully and in good faith. I don't want to be thinking my bones are fine and then surprise... broken hip and slow death.
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas 17 күн бұрын
Correct information, wrong perspective. Strontium will increase BMD faster than calcium. It's not artificial, it's simply what we would expect from strontium supplementation. The more important question is regarding strontium supplementation and bone strength and fracture risk. Here we don't have a clear answer. Strontium ranelate did decrease fracture risk in clinical trials. Does strontium citrate do the same? Hard to say. I like to use strontium in cases where low BMD is concerning but in conjuction with a comprehensive program that also addresses as many tools for strength as possible.

I read in several studies Strontium has a larger atomic weight than calcium (38 vs 20), which causes it to attenuate X-rays more strongly than calcium. Hence the readings on the DEXA scan appear artificially inflated with bone density looking better than is the case. what is your thinking on this?

I've heard of AlgaeCal and saw it a lot on Facebook. Wabted to try when i 1st was duagnosed with Osteopena. But, I was busy caring for my Husband a 100% Disabled Veteran ..its time consuming for sure. I'm now diagnosed with Osteoporosis! Saw a new Dr today, my Endocrinologist wanting me to take the Prolia injection soon. I declined for now to resesrch more... i want to start this Algeacal, a PT program to learn some weight bearing exercises...and watch more on a better diet! I have a 5K charity walk planned the day before my 70th birthday this month. One of my Daughters and Grandson plan to walk with me... then ill make some decisions about the Prolia injection! My Mother is 92 and very bent over! Scares me. My calcium score on a Total Body Scan was almost 2,000! I glad you talked about that too! I will consider a consult! I don't know of any bone specialist near me...who treat Osteoarthritis! Just South of Houston! Texas cowgirl 🤠

@@Dr_DougLucasI’m so confused by all this information. I feel overwhelmed. I’m 59, female. Fell last June from a chair and got a compression fracture of the T12. I also have high cholesterol and my glucose is 105. I currently only take vitamin c, b12, and D3 I have rheumatoid arthritis, Osteo arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Now my doctor wants me to have a bone density scan but I just watched a bunch of videos today where there’s actually a urine test or a blood test they can take to give you more accurate information on bone health and that a DEXA scan doesn’t really do what it should do so I’m scheduled for a scan on the ninth but I don’t know if I should have one, if it’s a waste of time and money and it’s not really gonna tell me anything and even if it did I’m not taking a bunch of All of these weird drugs that they want you to take I would rather try to figure out a natural way to fix this

I think it was lines pauling who said through his research that the minimum ratio of mag to cal was 2 to 1 ie...at least 2 mag to 1 cal. That was 40 years ago or more. There also used to be a supplement from an earth mineral with that ratio available..I forget what it's called it was like diorite or something like that. Vitmin d can raise your calcium and lower your magnesium as well. I think the ratio is what is most important with electrolytes. So many things correlated to high cal like fibroids alzhiemers sclerosis... so many things associated with high magnesium like less alzhiemers less stress better sleep less all cause mortality.

2 Questions re Study #9 on Algaecal: 1) If they were switching formulations 6 mo. into the study but did a 12 month annualization at 6 months, then how was the 2nd formulation included in that annualization? It sounds like it was all based on the first formalization? 2) With both groups taking a good dose of strontium, doesn't that invalidate the DXA scan they used to evaluate bone growth? You've said that strontium will cause the "appearance" of bone growth on DXA that isn't "real" because it's comparing it to previous studies that wouldn't show effect of strontium on imaging. Help me understand?

This was a very informative video. Thank you! I have been taking MCHC for awhile and was wondering how this compares to AlgaeCal. I will now switch. Perhaps Dr. Doug could compare other forms of Algae based calcium. Specifically, I am interested in which is organic and made in Iceland and used in formulas in both Europe and the USA. Some of the manufacturers who use this are New Chapter( Bone Solid) ,Raw Science ( Bone Strength) and Nature’s Answer( Marine Based Cal Mag). Aquamin has a website and you can register under the Science tab to have access to research data and papers. The supplements with Aquamin seems to be more affordable but still algae based. My question is - over what period should you test a calcium supplement for improvement? So if you do trial extra calcium, how long should one use it before getting a dexa to see if there is improvement? Unfortunately the association between dietary calcium and cardiovascular disease still seems to be unclear, so for me it remains a concern.

Can you share the product name because I’ve also had issues with stomach upset on Algaecal. I called and they suggested a different regimen but id like to try another product. If you can share, I’d like to hear of alternatives to Algaecal. I’m soooo disappointed that it’s causing such digestive problems because it seems to really work.

So frustrating! I had placed an order with AlgaeCal right when you came out with the video saying take MCHC. I cancelled the AlgaeCal order... I even specifically commented on that video about algae and was again warned against it. I could've been taking the product for many months. I guess this is why it is called "practicing medicine". I hope in a subsequent video you discuss how much K and boron are okay to take as i have other supplements with these. The one reason I don't mind taking numerous supplements, as then I can control the amounts I'm consuming.

Thank you Dr Doug, for this info. A couple of questions: Regarding the guarantee of that product you mentioned, the company told you: out of 100,000 customers, they’ve only issued refunds to 6. This doesn’t say: 1. how many people actually submitted a refund request ; 2. how many of those 100k choose to have a Dexascan at 6 months after starting the product (given the cost of Dexascans, etc); 3. how many people are motivated to write for a refund. Just a few examples of how limited that data point was. Question: I’ve been taking New Chapter Bone Strength which is food-based, organic algae-based, since diagnosed with osteoporosis in January. Are Dexascans 6 months apart really beneficial to measuring changes? I thought it takes longer to see results. Thanks!

I use algaecal as a back up when I go on holiday and cant control my diet as well etc. I researched a bunch of calcium supplements and preferred this brand. I like the algae part. Like Dr Doug says it is best to get it from food and it is hard to know what you have done that increased your bone density but this has good research behind it as he says. I reversed my OP over a 2 year period. I followed so much of what Dr Doug says. I was not taking algaecal until a month ago. So this can be done by diet, the right exercise and the right supplements like k2, melatonin etc. I did not use strontium or hormones. My low back improved by 15% and total femur by 11%. I am not in the OP range now. Follow what he says. Figure out what you are doing that led to OP. Dr Dougs videos help with this part a lot too. It takes determination and discipline. It can be done! Many thanks to Dr. Doug!

I’ve often wondered about that too, and from what I understand, the calcium in plant-based milk has been added, so it’s basically no different than taking a calcium carbonate supplement. It’s not really the same as getting it through foods naturally rich in calcium, like dairy products.

I listened all the way through, as always learned more from you than any doctor I've seen in person, but of course, doctors you see in person can't spend 20 minutes talking about one thing. I did look back at your other calcium video...saw a comment from someone with hypercalcemia, and it does sound like your thought was "find out why." I just found out I have hypercalureia...maybe serum calcium is high, too, just haven't gotten results back yet. I quit taking calcium supplements about...eight months ago, just based on all the confusion. I hadn't been getting a lot of calcium from food, either, but when I saw a new prospective primary care person, HE said "1500 mg calcium, from food if possible, supplements if you can't get there." So a month or so ago I did start trying to eat cheese and milk and other things I'd been avoiding a little bit because I'm chubby and also hypothyroid and some people say avoid dairy if you've got Hashimotos. But I probably usually was closer to 1000mg a day than 1500. I know, I need to talk to my own personal healthcare provider, but except for the naturopath, they all think I'm crazy for not taking the drugs, but that is also the only thing they agree on, so they're not that helpful otherwise. (My calcium was borderline high last summer; endocrinologist put me on a diuretic, which I do take, very small dose. Didn't take it for five days prior to this test, though.) It just frustrates me that even there, it's "take a drug" (or reduce salt, or reduce protein,) and I don't know why I'm "spilling calcium" in the first place, don't even know if it's coming from my bones. And I also have raging PVCs, so a diuretic actually, by messing with electrolyte balance, could actually make them worse...but I read that excess calcium can do that, too. But no dot connecting. Maybe I'm just old (barely 63!) and they figure this is just what happens to old people?

Good question. Check out this paper: Strontium administration in young chickens improves bone volume and architecture but does not enhance bone structural and material strength. Shahnazari M et al. Calcif Tissue Int. 2007 Mar;80(3):160-6. doi: 10.1007/s00223-006-0176-2. Epub 2007 Mar 5. But other papers state something different. A paper by Marx D et al.,."A review of the latest insights into the mechanism of action of strontium in bone," Bone Rep. 2020 Apr 24;12:100273 says that increased strontium accumulation is associated with reduced fracture risk in post-menopausal women.

I had poor spine dexa not as bad hip results. So as far as overall Dexa results being the same in body, not for me. Also, found out I have genetic Hypercalciuria. Which is peeing out most of your Calcium. Get a 24 hour urine check for this. Now on a tiny dose of a thiazide to keep Ca in body. 2 Endocrinologist's who do alot with bones want little supplemental Ca and both stress trying to get it from food. Now Strontium or not?

I was recently diagnosed with genetic hypercalciuria as well. I was put on 12 mg of a thiazide and told to take 600 mg of a calcium supplement and 600 mg through food. were you put on bone medication? I'm still researching to decide if I should take that. Endocrinologist said Fosamax.

AlgaeCal is tests every batch for purity and environmental toxins. Whenever a product is grown in the wild unwanted things can creep in. They control for this and are very responsible about reporting and quality. The contaminants in these supplements are not likely of significance when considered in the big picture of toxins exposed to on a daily basis.

I just discovered you, Dr Lucas last week and have already watched Several hours of your videos! I'm at a loss. I've read that there is bone pain with Osteomalacia, but there's not much discussion about it. And can there be pain with osteopenia? Do they go together? First Vit D was 14.6 and took several years to get around 35. With K2 it's increased to around 50. Recent DEXA compared to two yrs ago showed lumbar is better, guessing from doing back extensions, but wonder if compression of disc's factors in? Report said femur is worse! Both patellas are off center out and rotated a little. I've lost muscle too, so I started using hiking poles 2yrs ago and that helps some. It's getting difficult to walk. The PCP has only reported previously that I have osteopenia until now, and now asks if I would consider medication to help strengthen my bones? I'm more than frustrated!! Any thoughts?

Very interesting subject overall and I appreciate that it is difficult to get a specific understanding as most of these studies invovling supplementation have poor design or uncontrolled variables. I do have to comment about what the guy said about the incorrect table in the Algecan study and that they could not get it changed ??? If this paper was published in a peer reviewed journal than that statement does not make sense as the conclusions would not match the data! Regardless the table and conclusions would not match??? Hmm just not convinced but still hoping for something that has a positive effect which I am sure is your objective also. Thanks for all the information

I would assume that in order to take advantage of the money back guarantee, you'd have to get a DEXA before you started on it, and then again 6 months later. How many people are getting DEXAs every 6 months? Maybe that's why they only have six people per year taking advantage of it.

There seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the names of different forms of calcium. for example, I use bonemeal which is directly from animal bones and the label, says it is calcium carbonate but it also has micro crystalline hydroxi- appetite within it as well. So how do you parse that information out? & BTW, N of 1, when I started the bone meal and stopped the MCHA, my night time severe leg spasms subsided... makes ya wonder.....
