The Mentalist - Why Jane trusts Lisbon in Season 1
Relatively early in the series, Jane has decided that he trusts Lisbon, and he wants her to know that she can trust him in return. This video explores some of the reasons why Jane devotes himself to Lisbon.
Why does Jane want Lisbon to trust him? More importantly, why does he trust Lisbon, so early in their relationship?
In 1x09, Jane and Lisbon each declare their ideas of justice. In spite of their opposing beliefs, they continue to impress each other.
In 1x10, Lisbon does not judge Jane when he reveals that he had a mental breakdown, something he felt ashamed about. Instead she appreciates his honesty.
In 1x03, Jane had listened in on Lisbon's story about her alcoholic father and the misery of her childhood. Now it was his turn to share a vulnerable experience from his past, and her reaction was respectful, not derisive as he had worried.
In 1x10, Lisbon keeps pushing for the truth, even when Jane doesn't want to believe it. Lisbon sees that Jane feels sad and tries to help him feel better. He seems to genuinely appreciate her thoughtfulness.
In 1x11, Lisbon helps Jane with the Renfrew case even at the threat of her own suspension. Jane gives Lisbon two opportunities to rub in that she had been right about Renfrew. She refuses both times.
By 1x17, Jane makes a profound declaration: that he will always be there for Lisbon. This is in spite of her saying she will stand in his way if he tries to kill Red John!
Lisbon's actions show Jane that her pursuit of justice is sincere, even if their opinions differ. She hides her own pain while giving her all to help others heal, including Jane. Lisbon wins Jane's respect. Jane devotes himself to Lisbon.
The trust fall scene lays the foundation for their relationship moving forward. For the rest of the series, Jane keeps this promise.
