I don't know if you will see this but I have been struggling with my skin a long time and in the last few months have been getting very depressed over it. I have psoriasis on my face, but also rosacea that's new this year, and I've been so uncomfortable, so unhappy, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it. It's so versatile that it is a lip balm, emergency scrape protectant, and a dry skin rescue solution all in one. Saved me from getting cracked elbows and knees, and overall did a great job when I'm sealing in those skincare layers. Has been 2 decades and yep, still using it lol. It's nice for buffering my retinoids around the eye area too. Can't leave the house without an ultra mini tub of it wherever I go (and it's a mainstay on my skincare counter). However, I could understand people being averse to it because it does not work for them (as everyone's skin is different). For the ones fearmongering about petroleum jelly, they could potentially be missing out on the benefits (who knows?).

When I was growing up I used to hate vaseline because of the texture and how it made my skin feel. My parents always had to put some on me every winter when I got sinus infections and my nose and lips were raw. As an adult, it is the only product that works on my dry skin caused by hypothyroidism. It is extremely underrated and I wish it got more love for the succeeses it's provided people.

I'm a chemist and I love the way you explained it. But I have to say that there are millions of hydrocarbons out there and some are very very bad for you and others are used as medicine or other great things we use on a day to day basis. I talked to a collegue of mine a few weeks ago about this topic and let me tell you she is an expert when it comes to mineral oils! They are really not that concerning, especially if you keep them away from your mouth (eating them) and when they are saturated. The only problem are the aromatic hydrocarbons which are the bad ones who could potentionally cause cancer if swallowed. If you want to inform yourself just read a bit about MOSH and MOAH :)

@alfiarahma613 I don't know how other country's handle it but in Germany lip balms get tested because they often contain mineral oils and you basically eat them over time. But don't be concerned, it's very rare that they find MOAH concentrations above the limit :)

My Dad was an A grade truck mechanic. He always had a giant tin of Petroleum Jelly in the house & at the Workshop - used for lubricating machine parts. He was an avid Hunter as well, & once out alone at his camp fire - his water kettle blew up shooting boiling water on his face. It took him a day to hike to the nearest river to cool his face. By the time he got out of the forest his face was red, swollen & he could barely see his eyelids had stuck together. We did not recognise him. Despite being in pain he refused to go to the doctor. Instead he mixed a whole bottle of disinfectant called 'Camfosa' into the tin of petroleum jelly. He slathered that on his face morning, noon & night. I thought he was going to be disfigured for life. Instead after a week the redness subsided. At 2 weeks the swelling had gone down & he could see. At 3 weeks he used his concoction as a general moisturiser & by 4 weeks his face had 100% healed. He was in his late 50's so it wasn't youth that healed his skin. It was pretty miraculous & our family always have petroleum jelly/vaseline in the house.

The vaseline lip therapy range has been so much more effective and soothing for my chronically chapped lips (I constantly forget to drink water) than expensive lipbalms and lip masks. Yes, I've used this before as a child and currently when I use Aquaphor. I appreciate the extensive research you put into this video. It's very enlightening. I went to school for esthetics in the late 70's and mineral oil and petroleum/petratum were seen as the devil incarnate for skin. To this day I avoid it except as I stated above. So for my peace of mind, and my money, I prefer to use Eucerin Essential Oil Balm and other naturally thick oils such as shea butter oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter oil etc. I think plant-based oils are closer to my skin's own sebum and I just feel safer using it. In the UK just make sure the product is marked Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly 'BP' The BP [British Pharmacopoeia] marking indicates it is in compliance with the authoritative official standards for UK pharmaceutical substances and medicinal products. I believe many other countries have adopted the standards or have developed their own similar systems. It is very cheap and has endless uses, from dealing with nappy rash to waterproofing pit boots.

Sometimes its not the actual company testing on animals but sometimes its a market. For example, China regulations is they test imports on animals. Thats why Cerave isnt cruelty free. Cerave dont directly test on animals but they allow the chinese government to test on animals to allow cerave to be sold there. It could be the same case with Vaseline

These could have been tested on animals or not but a market like China still requires them to be. Also any formulation change, for example if they adjust the lotion to have slightly more petrolatum in it, that new formulation has to be tested all over again. So if Vaseline do test on animals, their new products and formluations will be tested on animals. If they dont test on animals, it could be markets like china who are testing their new products and formulations. Additionally, formulations take many many attempts in the lab to get correct. There could be 20 versions of the lotion and the one on sale is the final version. All of those versions would have been tested too.

It's not tested on animals, but it's sold in markets where animal testing is required to have to product approved (and that's done by the government of said country, not the manufacturer). Their parent company Unilever has phased out animal testing since the 1980s. As bad as animal testing is, people are so crazy to jump onto brands for selling in China but I see every single beauty influencer cruelty-free or not promoting tretinoin (which is tested on animals). Like animal testing isn't the most ethical thing, but I'm sure 99% of people who shill cruelty-free brands use non-essential products that aren't cruelty-free (Tylenol, Visine, OTC allergy medication, literally any OTC medication or prescription medication, personal lubricant, most brands of anti-perspirant, most brands of toothpaste, etc.) Never seen a single influencer tell you not to use lube if you want to support cruelty-free brands.

It is actually a really good barrier when you want to benefit from your skin care products. a layer of it, on top of whatever skin care with active ingredients will make sure that everything stays on your skin (it can't evaporate under Vaseline) and can't react with the surroundings (like how your vitamin C gets oxidized from the air after some time on your face -if you use L-ascorbic acid) because the molecule is so huge It's like putting a wrapper on top of your skincare

I wanted to see if I could use it for my hands so I googled it and read all about how it was originally discovered and purified etc... Then I saw the link to this video and I just wanted to say well done! People always seem to pick and choose the worst parts of a report to create fearmongering articles and videos. Even your example of water being toxic if you drink too much is true. I personally experienced water overdose in basic training when I was just 18 years old. Too much of anything isn't good. I have weak skin from having EDS; it tears easily and heals slowly. I also have a hard time using bandaids because adhesive can cause rashes or literally rip more skin off when I take them off. So what do I use when I get a cut or scrape (which is often)? Vaseline! It helps so much in sealing the injury so it doesn’t get infected, and then it can literally make things heal twice as fast for me. I haven’t found another product that works for that (liquid bandaids have latex which I’m allergic to) so when people bash petroleum skincare all I can do is laugh. Vaseline and similar products are a godsend, I’d love to have them live a day in my shoes with and without it!

My concern with petrolatum is that it could potentially bind any sort of oil based vitamins or actives ( retinol, vitaminE ) so that they can't get into the skin as easily. I say this bc many years ago, I remember reading that taking mineral oil for constipation would bind and carry oil based vitamins out of the body I know they aren't the same thing but they are both sourced from the earth, versus animals or plants. Just curious if there's been any research on this?

Vaseline is a great and safe product for dry spots on the body, but avoiding it on the lips and around the nose is best. Vaseline cannot be broken down by our body and can cause health problems if inhaled or ingested (like lipoid pneumonia). The Danish consumer council (Forbrukerrådet Tænk) have gone out to tell people to minimize use on the lips/nose until more is known about its effects, but otherwise recommends use since it (as you said) is great for dry skin, eczema, and small wounds. It's in Danish, but I can link it if anyone is interested. A great alternative to vaseline for the lip/nose area is lanolin, which is very similar in consistency and properties. I use Vaseline on the rest of my body and face though.:) Vaseline is also great for protecting your skin against extreme cold, and a thin layer is great for preventing swimsuit and wetsuit chafing

I love the tubes of Vaseline medical grade. I was buying expensive eye ointment and ingredients were petroleum jelly and mineral oil. Now after cleansing my face and eyes I put Vaseline around my eyes, eyelashes and waterline. Gives nighttime relief to extreme dry eyes and softens lines. I'll use Vaseline after moisturizer on lines and dry patches. Keeps lips soft and nails moisturized. Any cuts or scratches gets a coating and great on kitties paws to keep them soft.

In winter when it's freezing a thin layer of vasaline really helps your skin to stay healthy. We have a famous skatingtour here on nature ice which only is held in very cold winters and those skaters are absolutely covered in vasaline to have any skin left after 230 km of ice skating.

i buy lotions i like the smell of & then take 2 parts that 4 part cerve, mix them together. then i take half to 1 part vaseline & mix that in about 1/4 at a time to make a hand cream that works to heal my hands in the winter. it allows me to wear a lotion that smells nice, wears for ages & isn't too greasy. it works amazing. i adjust the amount of vaseline by how dry my hands are & keep it in a refillable pump bottle on my desk, bathroom counter & bedside table. my eczema normally doesn't let me do scented stuff but with the low dilution i can handle it. i used to use just the cerve & vaseline. kinda a tangent, but thought i would share if anyone else finds it a bit greasy or doesn't care for the scent.

I use vaseline as my go-to for just about everything skin-healing. As a kid in winter I used to get 1) really bad nose bleeds and 2) really bad dishydrotic eczema on my hands and sometimes around my face. These were both very embarrassing and uncomfortable/painful. I'd get blood all over my books because my hands would crack and my nose would randomly bleed almost everyday. People go on and on about how you should use "natural" and "plant-based" products but those contain a lot of irritants for people with a compromised skin barrier. Anything floral or oat-based, or anything with shae/cocoa butter, will take my eczema from dry/flaky to raised and burning almost immediately. When I don't have eczema those products are fine, it's just when I have current symptoms. I'd been using oat-moisturiser until I was like 18 and thought the burning during an eczema flare was just because of the hot shower but as soon as I stopped using it the pain and itching improved. I had a really painful flare up a few years ago at 20-21 and had eczema covering my entire arms, legs, lower stomach, and occasionally my face and chest - this is when I switched to all non-irritating derm-recommended products. If you have eczema, I highly recommend vaseline and QV brand soaps/moiturisers (don't know if they have that in America, but it's in Aus and the UK). Formulated for hospitals to be as low-irritant and hypoallergenic as possible. No fragrance. Massive part of my management when I'm not using any medication and a solid investment.

If you have dry skin and want a “natural” product (and I say that ironically because we all know that means nothing 😂) try lotion bars. You can buy solid lotion or you can make it yourself. One part beeswax, one part solid unrefined coconut oil, and one part shea/cocoa/mango butter. You don’t need any preservatives and it’s super easy and inexpensive to make. You can throw a bar in your purse and have it with you everywhere. It’s a LIFESAVER if you have dry hands or have to wash your hands a lot. You can also use it as lip balm. My favorite company is called Made On. But I just make my own. Melt it all in the microwave and pour into a container that’s a shape that works for you. I use small bowls to make body bars and silicone mini cupcake pan for purse bars. It’s a game-changer! Plus,to the bars are 100% edible and can even be organic if that matters for you (I used them on my kids when they were babies, so that mattered to me for a while). ❤

I get eczema in winter time. Mostly on my hands. ( I live in Canada, and winters can be cold and dry). I use Vaseline to prevent and cure it. It works better than medicated eczema creams, and it's safer. I even used it on my eyelid.

In the right quantities and with the right research and control, it could even easily be used for medical applications, I mean some snake venom is just a supercharged muscle relaxant or nerve blocker

Google is a search engine, not a definitive source of information. Unilever was still very much testing on animals in the 80s. I was a member of an animal welfare organization that focused on getting one of their testing sites shut down in the mid-80s.

Also if you think about it it's using a byproduct of the oil industry. Ie less waste. I'm all for using the entirety of a resource. Leather from the beef industry? Absolutely! If we are using the animal for meat then let's use every single bit of it. Collagen from the beef industry? Yes! Drilling crude oil already? Then yes let's refine and use this byproduct. Absolutely! Parts of meat animals that aren't the best for human consumption? Let's use it for our pets food! Use every part we can and waste less. It's also more respectful of the resource to use every part of it instead of just leaving the rest to rot or in refuse.

Vaseline is a life improving item for people with wounds that will not heal.. additionally, if you use it on a wound and cover it, it keeps it moist to prevent scarring.. if using it in that context, it slows healing down to allow the skin to heal properly with no scar tissue

As a teenager with bad acne more than a decade ago, I used to apply PJ at night because it helped soothe the pimples and heal them faster with less scarring. I never woke up with brand new pimples that might have been caused by the PJ; I even had softer skin in the morning!

One quick fact: Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly) seems to be toxic on rabbit skin but histological analysis of some studies showed no toxicity (no inflammation etc.) in mice skin. So some animals can't tolerate it like us. So if you have a rabbit don't apply it on it if it has a skin issue for example. Don't know if it counts for other pets like dogs or cats.

It’s been really beneficial for me and my oldest son in particular who both struggle with really sensitive skin and also very dry skin. I’m sure there are people out there who it doesn’t work for but for us it’s been amazing.

Hmmmm. I had no idea people were hating on vaseline. It have used it for chapped lips. I have also used it on my heels to keep from getting blisters with new shoes. But otherwise I have never used it on my skin, it's way too greasy for me. I use pure shea butter because it moisturizes really well but absorbs quickly so I don't feel greasy.

Ive used a variety of Petroleum jelly’s and none of them work as well as Vaseline. Ive tried to find out what makes Vaseline unique and apparently they infuse minerals into their triple distilled petrolatum. Apparently this replicates the minerals that would have been present in the rod wax. It’s disappointing that Vaseline is not cruelty free but they are by far the best petroleum jelly on the market with their patented “recipe”.

so I've used cerave healting lotion on my face for years now. it's the best moisturizer I've found that helps to keep my face feeling soft and hydrated. I only realised about 6 months ago that it contained petroleum, and honestly my skins been the best it's been since using that cream in yeaaaars. I'm 32 and have very few fine lines and I only rarely ever get spots on a small section of my t zone on the corner of my nose, which I've had since a teener and was a lot worse in my teens. I think petroleum is a obviously positive skincare ingredient, I've learned a lot lately about skincare and as somone who can't afford botox, my aim is to retain as much moisture in my skin as possible. petroleum and hyaluronic acid is where it's at for doing just that in my opinion. and really, as you've said, if petroleum was that bad for the skin dermatologists wouldn't be recommending it

Im from Europe, I use Vaseline when I need it. Its not banned and is sold in stores. Its super easy to get.
