My dark skin ladies not all treatments work for our skin. We are not one size fits all not even between the same color skin because we are bio individuals. Hydroquinone once stop the spots will come back with a vengeance. Cassandra knows her science but each one of us knows that the real proof of these outcomes is our own experience even when using products the “correct” way. Tretinoin can cause dry eyes too. All based on my own experience with products. Sooo, please be aware of side effects and do your own research. Once again we are not one size fits all. We need to figure out what is best for each one of us as individuals.

Yes i used both products (listed in description haven't watched vid yet) and neither worked for me. Chinese skin. Am finding salicylic acid w aloe for healing seems to be fading a melasma patch. Plus an AHA toner at night. I discovered not washing face for one night (yes had makeup on !) Made it peel off much quicker.. ie dried it I think.

That's crazy and interesting. Was it an 'essential' oil, or just a 'regular' (not essential)? I have hyperpigmentation too, and have been using a vitamin c serum off and on. Also, alpha Burtin? Or butrin? Its from the ordinary. Has been ok I guess. I can't really notice it too much, as I live in a very sunny place, so aside from me using sunscreen, I do get a lot of sun I feel, which might change the results of just using regular products that target that without any other factors

This video was so well organised and succinct, you really have a gift with your communication skills, the way you package and categorise each concept, and deliver it without the use of jargon or any fluff is so refreshing and appreciated. Sometimes when I see videos almost hitting the 20min mark it completely puts me off watching because there is usually so much rambling that it really jumbles up the learning/takeaway points of the video, but never with your videos, they are so jam packed full of information that if you lose focus for a second you’ve missed something important. I’ve tried everything. That Topicals Faded cream didn’t do anything for me….Didn’t even fade my hyperpigmentation a little bit. The combo that completely cleared my large hyperpigmentation on my cheeks is The Ordinary Lactic Acid, The Ordinary Salicylic acid, an AHA/BHA toner of any brand, and Tretinoin. I did this every night and morning, and my hyperpigmentation cleared in 4 months. Oh….and using sunscreen every single day

That's bc you had melasma. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Ppl aren't listening. She said certain ingredients that work for acne scarring /sun spots WON'T WORK on melasma. Glad you found what works for you but others here under your comment need to know that all hyperpigmentation isn't created equal and what worked for you may not work for them. However, if any of you DO have melasma, use the thinnest product first. Then let it dry completely before applying the tretinoin. Tretinoin drying you out? Sandwich it... I.e. Apply lotion first, let dry completely, then apply tretinoin, let dry. Then lastly apply another layer of lotion.

Brands that cost a fortune...often work better than affordable ones. Unfortunately...most of us cannot afford to spend 100 dollars on a one month supply of pigmentation serum. I appreciate Cassandra showing less expensive options. I have mature damaged skin and need serious formulas that I can afford. I use a lot of products. I have also incorporated a couple of home remedies containing Tumeric which is long known to help with pigmentation. I also use the Ordinary Vit C cream and Azelaic Acid, which is affordable and helpful...but does not offer awe-inspiring results. If I was rich, I would have procedures and spend hundreds of dollars on beauty products that truly work. I am grateful for The Ordinary and DECIEM which both offer affordable options for those who are NOT wealthy. There are products that I also splurge on...but by "splurge" I'm referring to 50 bucks MAX for one product.

In my experience really the only thing that permanently breaks up stubborn hyperpigmentation (and not just fading or brightening) are more invasive treatments like lasers, deep peels, microneedling, mesotherapy etc. You need to kill off the melanocytes that are producing the excess pigment (without eliciting a rebound response) and it's hard to do with just topicals, at least for me - I have dark skin. Excessive use of topicals sensitized my skin and made the pigmentation worse because of a rebound inflammatory response. What I've learned is that I must use products that have anti-inflammatory, anti-redness, soothing, etc. properties for any of these other ingredients to work.
@SleeplessinOC

I would pay Cassandra to look at my skin, tell me what I need specifically and when to use each product, layering them with The Ordinary. I have my list of The Ordinary products I should be using, but very confused about which one to use on top of the other-should some be used only every other day, etc. etc. My head is spinning!! I bought the Vitamin C cream-and this HAS to work, because I can feel the tingle!! I want to stay with The Ordinary specifically because of the high percentage of good ingredients, but the price!

So I alternate between my azelaic acid and the geek and gorgeous retinal. Skin takes time to see the results with the retinal but it's worth it. The azelaic acid worked within a few days for me though. 100% recommend.

I used The Ordinary azelaic acid for well over a year with no changes in my rosacea or dark spots, just tons of irritation. I switched to Paula’s Choice azelaic acid, it calmed my redness some but was still irritating. I set it aside for now to try Maelove Fade Away Brightening Serum. 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄

I have loved the agency dark spot formula. The vast majority of the age spots and freckles have gone in less than 3 months. I wish the future formula would erase the wrinkles as quickly.

I asked my GPs about something that helps with hyperpigmentation which tends to stay for weeks or even a year or more after any cut, and they told me that there's no such a thing and they cannot neither prescribe nor recommend anything OTC unless I want to spend money just for the sake of spending. Same thing told me dermatologists. Same thing in Spain and in Israel - two countries with high healthcare level.

I went to a dermatologist because I have melasma since in my late 20's it started with sunburn. The dermatologist said to me if your are happy this marks doesn't matter. I chicken out and leave my melasma alone. I use just a lightener.

You forgot about cysteamine in your cheat sheet. This is also a very potent ingredient that had been proven to be effective on skin pigmentation. It's safe on all skin type and can be used forever without side effect. Cysteamine are considered to be an alternative option replacement for those have bad reaction to hydroquinone which is considered to be the gold standard for treating hyperpigmentation.

Interesting. I've been treating my dark spots for a few years. My dermatologist first did an in office spray of the one dark spot in the middle of my cheek (missing a small part of it) and then prescribed Triluma which caused what I call "skin staining", where it darkened the additional spots I applied it to. So not only did it make my spots worse, it created more. When I returned to ask if I could get the part of the spot she missed with the nitro spray, she said no- she would rather I do "lasering". I didn't understand what that was, all she had told me was it could take several treatments to have affect. Without knowing how many treatments, and knowing each treatment was expensive, plus I traveled very frequently for work, so anything that requires me to return is challenging, I decided to just leave my face alone. It took over a year for some of the Triluma spots to fade. While working in California, some of my friends went to a nurse starting her own business and gave us a deal on an IPL session. I didn't notice any changes. My face was pink just after, but fine a few hours later. No change at all. Waste of money. I went back to Hawaii (which is where I got most of my sun damage) and visited a local that did a "freeze cream" on my spots. It immediately created dark scabs. She advised slathering them with honey for a few hours before bed which did help the scabs heal in a week and my face looked AMAZING... for a few weeks. Then the dark spots came back with vengeance. I did it again. Again they went away and then came back, this time it seemed to create more dark spots which stayed. I came back to the mainland and called my original dermatologists office who booked me for the "laser treatments" which I found out was IPL. After my first IPL at the derms office, I had the "cookie crumble" response, where tons of tiny dark scabs work their way to the surface and flake off. These helped remove some of the smaller new spots, but I didn't notice a big difference to the dark spots under my eyes and the upper sides of my cheeks. I did a second round of IPL with less cookie crumble response and not really any change. It's been a few months. I thought I'd try one more IPL round to see what it does and then just live with these inevitable liver spots in my 30s.

U hit it on the head! Sometimes others don’t readily see what gives us insecurities. Tho I only wish to clear pigmentation in certain spots, I saw a KZbinr this morning who uses Permanence skincare, which extremely lightened her skin within 11 yrs. She also mentioned a seemingly questionable skincare called Petals + Gloss. I love ur expert education.

Licorice root extract is proven to help uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation. Unfortunately there's no affordable product available so make I just mix SPF30 sunscreen with the liquid licorice extract. I also recommend gentle exfoliation with Boots own brand scrub

At 2:25, you say hypopigmentation when you meant to say hyperpigmentation. (I listened several times to be sure.) A text banner should correct it, but maybe you’re not allowed to edit vids once they’re posted, which would really suck. Anyway, thought you’d want to know.
