Well, heck, I’ve been slugging all this time and I didn’t even know it was a “thing”! I started several months ago because at 68, the skin on my face (and neck) is much drier than it used to be. I started nightly use of Aquaphor ointment for its healing properties and then began using Ponds dry skin cream underneath it as a humectant. The Ponds product feels great on my skin, so I figured I’d “seal it in” with a layer of Aquaphor. So I guess I stumbled onto something right just by intuition. That happens sometimes. 😂 Thanks, docs, for the validation!

How is it working? Have you seen any positive changes in your skin?
@MicheleEngel
@MicheleEngel Жыл бұрын
@@ashlynm997 My goal was never to achieve positive changes in my skin. My goal has been to keep my skin as hydrated and moisturized as possible from the outside. I'm 69 years old. I look about ten years younger than that, but that has more to do with genetics than anything else. Do I have fewer wrinkles than I otherwise would? There's no way to assess that. I've simply tried to look my best at any age, and I think I've succeeded. For all I know, this skin care regimen has had little to no effect. But it makes my skin feel good and well cared for. That's enough for me.
@LunarEleven

So many people think things like Vaseline and oils will moisturize your skin if you just put it right on dry skin (same with lip balm!) I've been telling people for years that you need to hydrate first and seal it in. I didn't know it was a beauty secret, I think it should be a basic concept we sorta all just know about. Anyone who asks how I'm 41 with no wrinkles has learned about slugging and sealing moisture in, I just didn't have a funny name for it 😂

Lady, this is NOT going to help your allergies. For the love of god, _don't put dinosaur juice on your skin._ It's toxic. USE SILICONE SCAR GEL. I wanted to chime in as a former allergy sufferer. I had allergies from college on and had to take a Zyrtec everyday of my life. I would get sinus infections yada yada … then I wanted to heal my gut and so in that process I eliminated dairy … well EVERY allergy went away!! My severe acne cleared up and I lost 70lbs in the process. It’s been almost 4 years and still NO ALLERGIES!! Occasionally as the season changes and there is a blustery day that carries tons of pollen etc. I will sneeze a few times and then my body just handles it and I never have to take anything and I’m totally normal. In healing my gut, I realized that allergies are a way of our body telling us that it is stressed and inflamed. What’s so amazing is that when we cleaned dairy out as a family, my 4 kids stopped having allergies, sleep issues, acne…. Amazing results!

@@anavazquez6218 Your skin is likely oily because it’s trying to compensate for all of the harsh drying products you use. If you moisturize your oily skin, your skin will stop producing so much oil because it’s getting the moisture it needs from your products. My acne went away when I started moisturizing instead of using products to strip the oils. Same goes with oily hair; if it’s oily, it’s because you’re washing it too much and drying it out, so your body creates oil to compensate. Hope this helps!

Thanks to you two, I began using CeraVe Healing Ointment on my lips which were peeling non stop, year round even with the use of RX steroid ointment. After watching one of your videos I began to suspect that I was really having a reaction to Castor Seed Oil, so I checked and yep it was in virtually every lip care and lip color I owned. So I went cold turkey and switched to the CeraVe Healing Ointment and within 48 hours the peeling completely stopped. I now make sure I use castor free lip products and I have not had a peeling problem since. I also love it for my cuticles which get really ragged in the winter and use it around my nose when it gets irritated from a cold. It comes in small travel size tubes too, so now I always have it in my purse. Never thought of slugging with it, though I'll try it now. Your advice is always so instructive and helpful.

Hey, so I have the same issue and never thought about castor seed oil. Did you ever use accutane? Do you ever use a warm washcloth to slough off the dead skin from lips? If so, do you see if that makes a difference? I’m definitely going to try the cerave healing ointment on my lips and see what happens. I have been struggling with major skin peeling for years and years :(
@lisab.3091
@lisab.3091 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ave1821 I have never used accutane. Apparently castor seed oil is a pretty reactive ingredient and you can develop a sensitivity to it at any point in your life. I tried a warm washcloth, even purchased a nifty little silicone exfoliating brush that has fine nubs on one side and larger ones on the other to help with sloughing (available on Amazon). I was at my wit's end. Unbeknownst to me, every product that I was using to soothe my lips was secretly aggravating them because they ALL contained castor seed oil (beware of lanolin too). Within 48 hours of switching to just the Healing Ointment my lips had cleared up. It's been 9 months since and I have no issues - even got through winter without peeling. About a month ago I began applying a castor free lip color over the Healing Ointment and had zero reaction. Yay! Good luck with your journey to healthy lips 👄

Think a lot of us were slugging for decades before it had a name. As a person with dermatitis, I’ve used Vaseline to seal in moisture for years. Pediatricians used to tell moms to use a medicated cream on baby’s butt for diaper rash, then a thin coating of Vaseline to keep the cream from rubbing off on the diaper. When the rash was gone, we’d seal baby’s butt with Vaseline at nighttime to prevent diaper rash from coming back. It worked.

Have you tried using oils? I know it sounds counter intuitive, but it can really work. I had super oily skin for years and nothing seemed to help or reduce it until I tried facial oils. Turns out my skin was overproducing oil because it was really dehydrated (which is different from having dry skin). Once I started using oils on my face it became way more balanced, no longer looked like an oil slick and fewer breakouts too. I found pure rosehip seed oil a good one to start with.

I’ve started slugging with Vaseline at night 2-3x a week and it has helped me repair my skin barrier after a massive flare up of dermatitis earlier this year. That said, I do love CeraVe’s Healing Ointment, but I mainly use that on my lips and cuticles. I’m learning that the fewer ingredients a product has, the better my skin will tolerate it. My nighttime routine is a double cleanse (Bioderma & Vanicream cleanser), a custom Rx that combines a low dose of Tretinoin and pharmaceutical grade aloe, and then a super basic moisturizer (Aveeno Oat Gel Moisturizer or VaniCream), and Vaseline. Two nights a week I will switch my retinol out for the Paula’s Choice BHA 2% because I’m prone to congestion on my nose. In the morning I skip the actives and focus on being moisturized and doused with SPF.

Petrolatum is used in sulphur based products for scabies. The pharmacists said it’s used to keep the mites immobile. Demodex mites are a contributor to skin issues. I think they cause pretty much ALL skin issues. So petrolatum will immobilize them when they are the busiest and reproducing at night. This is most likely the biggest contributor to improving skin conditions.

Wow! I didn't know slugging was a thing but I've been doing it for years. I have very dry skin and my mom put vasaline on us at bedtime so I just continued the practice as an adult. I did notice that when I put it over my tretinoin that I got more irritated around my nose so I started putting ointment in those areas that get irritated before applying my tretinoin. I'm glad to know it's good practice.

Thanks for mentioning lanolin as a possible allergen. A small percentage of people have a reaction to it , like me,( that are also allergic to wool) have a bad reaction to it. Vaseline and Cerevea are great alternatives.

I wonder if that's what my issue has been. About a month ago, I had a minor surgery and used Aquaphor on my sutures. Within a week, my hands started becoming dry and cracked even though I wasn't trying to moisturize them. When I did start trying to moisturize my hands regularly, they've become worse to the point that the skin on my fingers is cracking and bleeding. They start the day looking good and are in terrible condition by the end of my work day. I thought the Aquaphor just wasn't working. I never considered that a moisturizer could be the cause of my dry skin until watching this video, desperately looking for a solution to this issue.

This video is the first time I've ever heard of slugging, but I guess I've been doing this for year. I use straight Shea Butter (from NOW) as my occlusive. I can buy this in my local grocery store, so it's pretty convenient. As my humectant, I usually use ELF Holy Hydration. Sometimes I'll use ELF Happy Hydration, or CereVe Nighttime Renewing Cream. If I haven't used Trentinoin that day, or for a few days, I'll use Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair under the Shea Butter. But - this is the most irritating, so you need to be careful.

Hi, my English is not good. I use Shea butter to prepare my own creams with natural herbs, and home made macerat...etc I start use Hada Labo before couple days, all colection - pls, can you expain me how you use Shea butter? As I undestand all product under butter, all over face? (Also for "slugging" hear first time now, but all my life vaseline is "holly grail" in familly ). I'm 40+, and I nead something stronger now . Is neutrogena good for wrinkles, maybe better opcion of Hada Labo? Just come into "buy beauty products", and start learn about. Thanks.

Does slugging increase your likelihood of getting milia on your face/around your eyes? That fear is the biggest reason I stay away from petrolatum, but I’ve never known if it’s a “real” fear.

I went to Las Vegas and my dry skin was horrible from the dry desert air there when I came back to Michigan. I put on a hydrating mask, regular lotion, and then slapped aquaphore on my face and man oh man It worked so well. I'm definitely going to be doing it in the future when my face really needs that extra moisture. I would also just slather lotion on 2-3 times and it didn't help nearly as much as this!

It’s brutal living in the desert (although I do love it here). I’ve grown in Utah, but spent every summer and winter holiday in Connecticut. Every time I would go out there, I would finally have soft skin without having to slather on lotion all the time- and when I’d come back, my elbows and the sides of my mouth would crack and bleed. Had horrible eczema growing up and it was all because of the desert air.

I start getting red, chafed skin within 24 hours after landing in Vegas for vacation! I start slathering on Fruit of the Earth Aloe Gel as soon as I get to the hotel. It completely prevents any chafing. I also put a small humidifier on the nightstand and pointing towards my head. I would never do well as a resident there.

I live in a very dry climate - Denver - and I've been mixing Vaseline with my facial moisturizer daily for 30 years. Right after washing, I pat dry and slather on the Vaseline mixed with a little lotion before my skin has time to dry completely. The air here is so dry, it'll suck the moisture from your skin in minutes if you don't lock it down. I guess I've been "slugging" for decades and never knew it.

Shea butter is a great occlusive, and often more cosmetically elegant than petrolatum. But petrolatum (vaseline) is the gold standard of occlusives - it's incredibly effective as reducing water loss. But I think at the end of the day just use whatever works best for you! I love both and prefer when moisturizers have them. :)

Figured it out by accident when I was getting such dry feet that they cracked and bled and nothing I tried worked, so one day I just slathered the heck out of them with Vaseline and put socks on over them. If you have a reaction to your toothpaste causing cracking in the corners or dried lips, check to see if it contains SLS. This ingredient is used by most toothpaste manufacturers to make the paste foam more in your mouth. It is a known irritant and is used in other soaps and shampoos. I switched to Sensodyne, which does not contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) , and the problem went away.
