In my opinion, whats disturbing is not the fact that Saki got raped or whatsoever, its her depression and low self esteem. and the manga is obvious enough to mask it around lewd drawings and her facial expressions of 'happiness' and 'excitement' whenever she gets pleasured(or raped and drugged). that is definitely ShindoL's purpose of his storytelling and message. Saki's tragedy. Saki's abuse. How she numbs herself with sex and drugs. drowning herself in filth because she cant find anything thats meaningful in life and in herself. Its disturbing because i read it and felt so helpless for her, and wished for a 'good character' to just sweep her off her feet and save her, a person who could show her even a little bit of kindness. but no one did, no one saved her. no one loved her. the only one that could have given her that chance was her unborn baby. ..... I found emergance sad more than anything (Note: I dont cry easily, or get disturbed easily, eg: gore doesn't effect me) The ending just broke me. For me reading the chapter 1-6 wasn't that bad for me, but at the end, god. It just,, hit me like a truck. Just seeing Saki lying there on the ground.. when she thought about how her life could have been, it all hit me. She had no one, she had nothing. The only thing she had was drugs and sex... And then she found light, that light was her child.. and she lost the baby.. she lost everything. She lost herself. It made me cry.

I understand and appreciate the ideas behind emergence and Shindo L is a great artist/writer but it just depressed me at the end. That seems to be the point as it stuck with me and as you're not really expecting it, its pretty effective. However someone made their own alternate ending called "I'm gonna fix that girl (emergence alternate ending)" and it is incredible. If you havent seen it already you should search the alternate ending up. You wont be dissapointed.

I was really "scarred" at the end at the end of emergence. but not because "it's too graph1c it's traumatizing !!1!!1" but because I recognized myself in saki. and I wanted to correct you, this story couldn't happen to anyone, it could happen to any *woman* . Metamorphosis was depressing and sad from start to finish, but for me it was everything that happened after Saki was pregnant for the second time that really, really made me sad. Before all that, I felt sorry for Saki as she was constantly getting abused and taken advantage of, but when she got pregnant for the second time, instead of getting an abortion like she did the first time, she wanted to keep the baby and try to turn a new leaf. From that moment, I went from just simply feeling pity for Saki, to rooting for her and hoping she succeeds. The following sex scene was the one I felt the most emotion to than any other sex scenes in this doujin because here, she was fighting for something other than herself, she was fighting for her unborn child too, but being a prostitute, this is the only way she can earn money for herself and the baby. She even started to try to resist her drug urges, which made me cheer for her even more. That's why I was so angry when those pieces of shit former classmates beat her up, most likely killing her baby in the process and took the money that she earned from months of having to sell her body. The following scenes where she looked into the mirror, put on the glasses, recreated her old look from the beginning of the story, and started sobbing, that part, that part broke me.

Emergence have a very special place in my heart, because I was Saki. I was her. The difference is, my friends are really nice people who saved me. My mom and dad didn't let me go with my groomer (pretty much like Hayato. He is ready to sell me to his drug dealing friends). Some scenes there and lines of Hayato and the old guy saki had seggs with reminds me so much of my teenage life. I'm 22 now, a cosplayer and digital artist who teaches in preschool. Metamorphosis makes me sad. I feel so bad for Saki and the situation she went through. She tried to change and the world and the society said no. No one helped her and her end was one of the most depressing things I have seen. The thing that also upset me is that even if she didn't get hurt and gave birth, the baby would have been born addicted to heroin. It's one of the saddest things to be born into this world as, but I don't really blame Saki for it. She was given a shit hand and wasn't shown enough love.
