I mean for anything that’s considered an isekai it matters. But all things considered the digital world is the settings, it’s where it takes place, but the anime could also be considered fantasy/adventure fantasy. Theres even isekai that could also be considered as horror or comedy or pretty much any genre which is why it’s a bit questionable as to if isekai is a legitimate genre.

Well beyond just it being a setting Isekai is what most people would call a"sub-genre" like a "Buddy Cop" action film, or a "Slasher" horror movie. There's a reason we have the term and this is it. This particular Fantasy setting/plot structure has occured so often that it becomes a specific category within the broader Fantasy genre.

As a person who has friends working in the animation industry and learned about the current state in class, the problem with South Korea is that the animation industry hardly gets investment. It is getting bigger but the big problem is that with low investment there’s hardly any time to produce a good standard show. Like the time the investors give are unbelievably short. So prerecording is almost impossible. Especially for large scaled very fancy animation movies/ tv shows.

I personally liked Wotakoi when the anime came out. Not sure if that is classed as a Shoujo genre. I like that it has some nerdy gamer/otaku stuff, some romance, and pretty good comedy in it mixed together. I was visiting Japan as it was airing. When I saw that the manga looked to be getting good reviews, I stopped watching it to not spoil it. Bought all the volumes of the manga to read help progress my Japanese learning. It is my reward to proress my studies. As an adult male, I enjoy a good number of shoujo/romance themes. They seem to have a lot of good feeling vibes, and sometimes have the humor to help put a cherry on the genre. I enjoy it.

I think, that things like "Isekai" or "pirate" anime can be described as Sub-Genres.
@adambaker2190
@adambaker2190 5 жыл бұрын
But those define setting and character tropes, not genre. You can throw pirates into another world and it would still not define its genre. On a similar note, the mechanics of a show, movie, or game don't really define the genre either. One Piece would be very different if it were horror, but wouldn't be much different if it took place in another world.
@SergeVolkovMusic
@SergeVolkovMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Well, first, let's define what a "genre" is. Technically, this is a general concept that reflects the essential properties of an artwork. And these properties can be both generalized or more specific, such as setting or сharacter trope just for sake of simplifying classification and ordering, imho.
@adambaker2190
@adambaker2190 5 жыл бұрын
@@SergeVolkovMusic But you can have a horror take place on earth or on another world, or involve pirates or ninjas or both. Horror defines the genre, not the people in it or where it takes place. And a sub-genre should better define what it is about, for example, gore or thriller being sub-genres of horror. If anything isekai would be a super genre or you could use the actual term, in this case, the setting. That's the point he was making. A genre is not the same as the setting, and the setting should not be what you use to describe the genre of a movie or show. If you did, Star Wars and Alien would be the same genre. Sure, they are both sci-fi and both take place in space, but Star Wars is not the horror that is Alien, and Alien is not the opera that is Star Wars.
@SergeVolkovMusic
@SergeVolkovMusic 5 жыл бұрын
@@adambaker2190 You say so, as if we using the setting or anything else as a sub-genre, we can no longer use the main genres. Yes, "Star Wars" and "Alien" are movies of different genres, but they have a common setting. And I see no reason why this can not be specified as a sub-genre to better define what it is about and simplify the search. Why do you think that if there are gore in the film, then it is ok to specify this as a sub-genre, but if the movie is about pirates or ninjas for example then we shouldn't do that?

I was one of those who said "Steins;Gate gets interesting after the second half" but last year I read the VN and MAN, everything is great about Steins;Gate! (imo). What would be "the first half" is actually pretty good by itself. I love the "science" on S;G and its take on time travel is my personal cannon. And the Soundtrack is amazing and all hail to my personal Goddess Asami Imai (Kurisu's VA). So yeah! With the Vn you experience the story a little different. You get the "whole experience". It's a good idea to read those. (And I kinda want to read Chaos;Child because i've been told is pretty good. I haven't watched the anime nor will watch it)

Genres are just taxonomy, used to categorize something so the user can have a grasp of what the product is about before buying. Working in the videogame industry I see every day genres like "First person shooter" (which are a camera perspective + a mechanic), "Role Playing Game" (which indicates a system), "Managerial" (which comprise a set of dynamics), "Platformer" (which hints to a level design obstacle), "Metroidvania" (which indicates the game it take inspiration from) and I can go on. So yeah, as long as the genre gives info about the show and make the people grasp what it is about (theme, setting, etc), "Pirate", "School" and "Isekai" are fully functioning genres. In the end it's just taxonomy and the human desire to classify everything.

I gotta respectfully disagree with you, chief; While School, Pirate or Isekai aren't genres in the sense that they describe what type of story it's going to tell (like Fantasy or Horror) you most definitely can say "One Piece is my favorite Pirate Anime." Because, some settings are simply so popular that the setting is more enticing to some than the genre. Some people just like the prospect of a story told in another world, not really caring what said story might be about, and so they tend to say "I like Isekai anime" rather than "I like anything that takes place in another world and has a set of common themes and tropes."

Equilorian anything can be a genre. Being a setting and being a genre are not mutually exclusive. The definition of genre includes “characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.” Which means that yes, settings can be a genre too. Look at western movies. Similarly, you could say that Isekkai does tell you about the story. In fact, it tells you a lot more about the story than “thriller” would. With just thrilled, you know a general mood. With Isekkai you know much much more, but lack what the mood will be. It’s simply differentiates what info you have before starting the show and what your expectations are.

Short answer: The current naming method for anime Genres is retarded, but it's a solution to how Japanese as a language works. Long answer: For the Japanese language, description as genre is a language hack they need because their language doesn't really allow for the formation of completely new words, just compound description-words. English uses a hack to do the reverse, the hyphen and the apostrophe, to allow for compound descriptions and words, so neither is doing better overall.

Ok, I really want to know, what do people dislike about Grimgar?! If the answer is Ranta, well, he's there to annoy the shit out of people. The author makes sure to remind everyone of it in every tome. Every character has a realistic personality. For once, we actually see the struggle of the main characters, and real struggle, people actually die, no one is safe from death, but they're not pointless death like Akame ga Kill. Every character feels real. I actually know people that would fit how those characters are described. It's easy to identify, the story is engaging, the pacing is somewhat slow, fine, but it's not a bad thing imo, there is real suspense. I just love everything about it. So, while I could understand why someone wouldn't like it, I can't understand how you could call it shit.

OK let me get this straight... He says that it would be stupid if we were saying "pirate" was a genre (4:44), but "magical girl" genre is just fine? (17:52) Somethings's not adding up. I also believe that isekai is indeed a genre now. Because a genre describes the feel or atmosphere of a series. If you can say, "this show has a *insert genre here* vibe to it" then it can probably be a genre. You could just call them fantasy, but that doesn't really do it justice does it?

Anything can be a genre. Being a setting and being a genre are not mutually exclusive. The definition of genre includes “characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.” Which means that yes, setting can be a genre. It doesn’t even have to be a subgenre as Isekkai does not always mean fantasy. For example, there are a couple sci-fi Isekkai as well and also reverse Isekkai where someone from a different world comes to our world. That would not be fantasy if the setting is our world. Anyway again, settings can be genres. Look at western movies. Pirate can also be a genre by the same rules.

While I do agree, I think mahou shoujo for me is like power rangers but with cute anime girls, to justify the term. This is where there is a recurring format, where some girl meets some mysterious thing, makes a contract and gets powers. Whereas Pirate would be akin to Demon, Penguin, Butler, as these have less format behind it and more just a descriptor of the characters in it. The closest similar term would be Idol, where its more like a format (idol do idol things, there is a concert at the end of the arc/episode, etc). I would prefer if there is a term for the "power rangers" format apart from shounen or action, but I am yet to become aware of such a term.
@cloudunderweather9554
@cloudunderweather9554 5 жыл бұрын
@@magic_cfw that makes sense with the whole iconic "magical power rangers" feel. i just think Joey thinks this can be a genre, and not something like pirates only because there currently *is* no pirate genre. Use any theme enough and a format is likely to develop naturally. I think Joey believes its not dumb that mahou shoujo is an idea for a genre because its already been established by a gajillion anime. If a bunch of pirate anime follow the things One piece did, it would be a genre just like everything else. You know, hidden treasure that they never find, gradually recruiting members that they call "nakama", first pirate ship saves your life and makes you cry, blah blah blah. Its not as stupid as he makes it seem.

to me what distinguishes an isekai from a traditional fantasy is the fact that this world is new to both you and the protagonist, allowing you feel more immersed. My guess for why isekais are such a force among the otaku community is that isekai essentially gives the ultimate form of escapism. One where you and the protagonist learn about this world simultaneously. Whereas traditional fantasy tends to be a much more third person experience

Grimgar was a REALLY good show, it just needed WAY more time to get into the plot than it had before the "Oops, season is over! If you liked this and want more you better go buy those books! ;-3" that's so painfully common these days with genuinely good series, I guess the cost to profit rates just aren't there for the companies involved compared to the Novels and Manga.

@jireh tamiing May I add then, since you are adamant, that Mahou Shoujo is a sub-genre, which is also what many people consider isekai as. They are all part of the Fantasy genre. Subgenres are just convenient divisions that divide stories with similar traits, like "stories of characters being transported to another world or simulaton" or "stories of young girls being granted magical abilities". And Shounen is a demographic that Japan uses to categorize their stories, specifically they use it to label the stories they write for teenagers. What most people talk about when saying "shounen manga" is actually the Action manga written for teenagers like Dragonball and One Piece.

People keep overhyping the show like it’s this great anime with amazing writing but I’m like, nah fam it’s decent, solid even but it’s not as great as shows like dororo, mob psycho, hxh, fma or even naruto for that matter.

@@sondnatsuro7148 I mean in terms of writing. I don't care about the sales. Read the context of my comments man. I said I don't care about the hype and enjoyment. It's popularity is due to coming out during a dry spell of good shows and it filled the gap as a good show. But some people say it's one of the greats or even the greatest. Which I disagree with both. That's all.
