Star Wars Reading Club I disagree that the first order upgrading their fighters had any marked effect. star killer base is the biggest example that comes to mind. They had dozens and dozens of new shielded tie fighters against what maybe 20-30 resistance Xwings. How did they learn anything? The first order is shown to be incompetent in both of the new movies. The opening of the last Jedi is another perfect example. How can you say they made improvements when they didn’t even launch fighters to protect their most valuable space asset until all of their aa guns where hilariously destroyed. Like what? Not even alert fighters. I would love to believe the first order is a threatening enemy that’s learned from the mistakes of the empire but in the movies they are just incompetent hilarious buffoons who make no sense and act as if they didn’t learn anything from the past including how to be intimidating as the first order is about as intimidating as a wet noodle lol

I always thought of the basic Tie-Fighters being overwhelmingly unprepairedin Battles. Not only because of the lacking shields and hyperdrive, but also because of their very design. In my view, the empire made this line of star fighters way too much of an easy target for their enemies.

What I would do is --- not build any kind of superweapon --- not build 19 kilometer long, overly gigantic Super Star Destroyers --- refine ship designs like those of the Imperial Star Destroyer to make them more efficient with regards to energy and crew requirements --- equip all star fighters at least with shields and ideally with hyperdrives as well; more efficient designs would be welcome here too --- better balance the number of star fighters and capital ships
@NiiRubra5 жыл бұрын
Yep. The one thing I slightly disagree with is the size of ships, maybe not overly gigantic SSDs, yeah, but there is a little bit of value in having a very big, intimidating ship. Not to mention that, if this big ship had strong shields, it could serve as physical cover to protect your other ships, and if the worst comes to pass, you can probably ram smaller ships, you wouldn't want to be in the receiving end of that, right?. So maybe a handful of giant space battering rams would be good.

Decent escort and support vessels used in conjunction with your capital ships would also help. I envision a task force responsible for multiple systems to be something as follows. A 5 to 6 km long task force flag ship, armed with with a variety of long and medium range turbo lasers and ion cannons, banks of multidirectional launch missile/torpedo cells, and tons of point defense/close in weapon system laser and hyper accelerated projectile cannons. It should have it's own interdiction generatorand the best sensors and communication systems available. In addition to bays for repairing escort vessels and fighters might also consider fleet and planetary bombardment drones/missile launch cells, each weapon carrying payloads of dozens to hundreds of simultaneously launched independantly targeted proton torpedoes (such a weapon system could be large enough for light shields and maybe even a droid operated hyperdrive, which after an incident like the Radus/Supremacy collision could replace torpedoes and launch tubes with a high density penetrator nose, super heavy focused shielding, and a hyperdrive without any safety features, now you have a super weapon) 3 to 4 Interdictor Star Destroyers, primarily equipped with very long range weapons and lots of point defense. 9 to 12 Imperial Star Destroyers, all of these need more point defense systems, 3 to 4 might emphasizes larger fighter compliments and 3 to 4 might have missile launch cells. 42 to 57 (3 per star Destroyer sized vessel and 6 to 9 for the flag ship) escorts specialized in coordinated fleet defense against fighters, drones and missiles, such as the Lancer, with strong enough weapons to hurt freighters and civilian cruisers. 27 to 36 multipurpose light cruisers to provide additional fire power and options to commanders in large engagements but also as quick reaction forces when a Star Destroyer is too much. 3 to 4 reconaisance/communication/electronic warfare vessels because ships can communicate while in hyperspace and sometimes you might want to change your plans before you drop into a system. Several special operations vessels these might be in the corvette/frigate/light cruiser range or smaller. Fill all you fighter slots and replace losses asap. Task forces such as this should be able to respond to a variety of problems and make more sense for a unit like Darth Vader's Death Squadron, or Thrawns battle group. Although I think Grand Admirals might have several such task forces, but that depends on how common Grand Admirals are. In most cases you might only need a single Star Destroyer with its escorts to deal with a problem on a planet or system. You also have 3 to 4 groups of an Interdictor Destroyer and 3 other Star Destroyers with 12 defensive escorts, 9 multipurpose support ships and an EW ship, which are more than enough to deal with most star systems if a problem occurs. The large number of defensive escorts is to provide good 360°x180° protection for the Star Destroyers and cover and blind spots. Such sub groups and the task force as a whole would be more difficult than lone Star Destroyers for groups like the Rebel Alliance to take out. Your still going to have patrol groups made up of smaller ships including the light interdictors and carriers, these would be part of a Sector fleet. Sector fleets will need to fit the needs of the sector and the Moff of that sector.

Less than you'd think: the Empire could barely crew the ships they had, so the Empire had already reached its peak. Tarkin knew this, which is why he tried to rule through fear. The Empire might have been able to make up the difference with droids, but Palpatine wanted a military he could control in its entirety. Even then, droids are vulnerable to shutdown orders. Tarkin actually had the right idea, but his mistake was using the Death Star immediately upon Alderaan, a massively influential planet who's destruction could easily trigger widescale revolt. If he'd blown up a planet for use as a mine (the Death Star cover story,) the implications alone might have been enough to end the Rebellion. Too bad Tarkin was bonkers.

Chuck asteroids at it until it runs out of ammo and one hits it. It's literally putting all your eggs into one basket. Why even bother with a planet destroyer? Just shove an asteroid out of orbit onto a planet, it's infinitely cheaper and has the same impact of killing all life. Hell, just hyper-drive a few tons of steel into a planet, going faster than the speed of light it would annihilate everything on the planet. Having FTL tech and not using it as a weapon is more or less a failure on the part of the writers. I'll give Disney one thing, they had the guts to show that FLT tech is basically an unstoppable fleet destroying weapon. The amount of energy the death-star puts out to blow up a planet is basically a mouse-fart next to the energy it would take to accelerate a tonne of steel to 99.99% lightspeed. The fact the death-star can either accelerate beyond light speed, or fold space to travel faster than light is more impressive than it being able to blow up a planet. To put it into perspective, if you tossed half the mass of Mt. Everest worth of antimatter at earth, it would be enough to overcome the gravity holding earth together and turn it into just space debris. If you wanted to fld space between Earth and our nearest neighbour of Alpha Centauri, the most conservative estimates would require you to convert all of Jupiter into pure energy. So that's taking half of Jupiter, and an equal mass of antimatter, assuming you could perfectly capture all the released energy, just to theoretically FLT to the closest neighbour. Realistically, you'd probably loose so much energy you'd need several Jupiters and several Jupiter sized masses of antimatter.

TBF, the Death Star worked. If not for sabotage then it was pretty much invincible and Death Star II had rectified those flaws. The Empire chose to gamble and lost.

Oh well, every villain organization must have an Achilles heel. Which makes me wonder what would be the flaw of First Order in the next and last episode of this franchise, messed up as it is.

I mean. Ig-88 was literally taking over the second Death Star so it kinda needed to be destroyed

Tie Defenders still might not have been able to win the Battle of Yavin The Death Star deployed all its tie fighters in Zone Defense. Without Darth Vader being present it would have been Porkins who got to kill shot on the Death Star

It's an interesting idea but it doesn't seem JJ Abrams was told about it. Go see Poe Dameron at Takodana...

They have shields, the shields just don't last past the first few shots: they're meant to stop glancing blows while you juke away, not absorb dozens of hits.

Aside from better navy the imperials should listen to officers who may had more experience in arm conflicts. Such as sideous not listening to his own men when they aired their opinions. Good flexible navy and ground forces with better command structure with very little resources going to super weapons
@Davitofrito5 жыл бұрын
wouldn't they have won if they had just deployed their TIE fighters en mass at Yavin? Didn't the DS1 have thousands of fighters just sitting in hanger racks going unused because Tarkin was too confident?
@bubbasbigblast85635 жыл бұрын
It's certainly possible, but attacking fighters in the trench would have been beyond almost all of the TIE pilots. Even Vader's wingmen didn't try taking shots, leaving it up to the Empire's best pilot.

As you said, putting shields would have cost the TIE speed, and the ability to move as they did Also it would have cut down on the fighters weapons power. I feel like this was done to close a loophole in the origtrig. But I also don't think it works logistically. In other words it's the Dr Strange "only way". "Well it would have happened that way because the first order ran tests". Uhm, no. This falls flat for me

It sure didn't hurt Vader's TIE.
@wakinyanredwolf69495 жыл бұрын
@@karlrovey right? Notice how much larger Vader's TIE was!? Because it would have needed more power for the shield, so it had a bigger powerplant. All the regular TIES would have had to been upgraded to handle the bigger powerplants. Then they are no longer regular TIES, they're TIE Advanced. Regular TIES couldn't handle it without the loss in power to other systems.

Further proof that Tarkin was an idiot, and his incompetency was what truly doomed the empire. Had Thrawn had his position the rebellion would’ve been routed within a month and his more reasonable nature would’ve placated many civilizations that eventually rebelled.

Or they could have just gone with Droid Star Fighters like the separatists, would not matter how many got shot down then. Or you know just better AA in general for the Death Star and Star Destroyers.

First Death Star could even have been saved, if every available Tie fighter would have been deployed in battle, not just Darth Vaders personal squad. Read something about that the rebel pilot would have been outnumbered by 50 to 1.

@Nathan-DTS in Episode IV an officer came to Tarkin and said, that there is an possible threat for the station and that Tarkin should be evacuated. So I think they knew, that something were wrong.

Actually, if the clone army was maintained and not used conscripted soldiers throughout the galaxy, Imperial desertions would not have existed. The number of clones that fled the Grand Army of the Republic were less than a percent compared to the millions of soldiers that were produced, fought, survive and died on the battlefield. Additionally, what was also present but not talked about was the pro-human movement putting humans in charge of key areas of the republic and promoting privileged individuals to the rank of admirals, generals and moffs who did not have practical military leadership skills also doomed the Empire. What would the Empire would be like if Thrawn was Grand Moff instead of Tarkin? The Imperial Navy would have been vast and the Death Star would only have been built only after the navy secured the galaxy. Thrawn would also have many individuals positioned who could lead and carry out orders efficiently, the officer core would have been stronger and Vader would not have execute many in the Empire for failure or incompetence. It is clear Palpetine did not want to manage the day-to-day operations of the Empire but if he looked deeper into Republic and recruited those based on skill and not pedigree, the rebellion might not have been formed. Thrawn, though strict in protocol and duty, would not have been a brutal warlord as Tarkin and the other moffs and admirals. Only when it comes to attacking the empire would we see Thrawn's cold calaculations be swift and brutal. Thrawn for Grand Moff in 15 BBY!!!

Tarkin was a dumbass, instead of a military of advanced efficient and high quality ships, fighters, walkers, and troops, Tarkin decided it made more sense to have a large military comprised of flimsy shieldless fighters, oversized ships with over exposed bridges and shield generators, and super-weapons instead.
