FURTHER READING
“The so-called Mind-Body problem is one of the greatest and most quietly painful conundrums in philosophy - and more importantly, in everyday life. The problem is rooted in the fact that in the eyes of other people, all of us are automatically and stubbornly associated with our bodies (which includes, of course, our faces). The way we look is the overwhelming factor that dictates how others assess our natures and our characters. Whatever lip service we might pay to less punitive ideologies, in the practical world, who ‘we’ are is taken to be how we look…”

I think "mind-body problem" more typically refers to the mechanism by which the mind and body interact.

You're correct in a sense - but the mind-body problem is 'The mind is about mental processes, thought and consciousness. The body is about the physical aspects of the brain-neurons and how the brain is structured. The mind-body problem is about how these two interact.' The video doesn't cover this at all. Rather, it's suggesting what we are on the outside is not our true selves. This is a very different idea to the mind-body problem; Alain seems to be saying that we have this sense of there being a 'barrier' between ourselves and others due to others not being able to 'see' our mind, and this is a completely valid idea. However, it isn't the mind-body problem and the title is.. misleading.

We did choose the title very consciously, to try to reclaim it for what - we feel - is a fairer focus.

I see - that's definitely an interesting spin on the problem. As a psychology student we're almost conditioned to have the original definition of the problem in memory, and I've never really considered other ways of interpreting it. Your videos are a perfect description of the things we tend to ignore, purposefully, in life. Keep up the great work!

It's a bit misleading though, don't you think? For people unaware of the philosophical problem, you have now misinformed them. I think it would be better to first explain the philosophical problem and then do this psychological interpretation of it.
@JAYDUBYAH29
@JAYDUBYAH29 7 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent video on this psychological conundrum, but I agree it is inaccurate to use this title, because the mind-body problem refers to a long standing debate on how to make sense of questions like whether or not the mind is distinct from physical or biological processes, if the self is somehow distinct from the body and is really akin to a non physical soul, and how to make sense of the relationship between the brain and consciousness. There is a really astute observation you are making here about the problem of biases and prejudice with regard to body type, facial appearance etc and how we too easily ascribe virtue to attractive people who may be mean spirited and ignobility to those who look unappealing but may be saintly. How to keep expressing and sharing our values, talents, opinions and interests with others so as to have authentic intimacy that penetrates these built in prejudices is an important question, but it is not technically the "mind body problem" as discussed by philosophers.
@1stGruhn
@1stGruhn 7 жыл бұрын
You certainly cover a problem but the "mind body problem" is a specific philosophical problem dealing with consciousness and the physical body: is the mind a physical thing? You should have chosen a different title for the video (not that you didn't cover an important topic but I was expecting something on the actual mind body problem).

I wonder how one would cover such a topic. Hard science has yet to even come close to solving that one. To me, it is the central question of existence, and yet we are no closer now to solving it than we were 2,000 years ago. Ultimately, we have no idea whatsoever what we actually are. That fascinates me no end. :-)

Well put. in my view. we actually do not live HERE. what we are is an image of someone who lives elsewhere. It is as though the world were a television screen and our minds were the eyes of consciousness that see others as we see ourselves.

@theschooloflifetv 7 жыл бұрын
We chose the title very deliberately, to draw attention to what we feel is philosophy's somewhat counter-intuitive focus. This - we feel - is what the problem should always have been about.
@1stGruhn

School of life, looking back at the history of philosophy suggests that the problem you are dealing with is more of a contemporary problem. The ancients didn't seem to think even think of it... nor really anyone outside of the past 100, maybe 200 yrs. It would be an interesting endeavor to see how old the problem you are dealing with is. I suspect it is a result of existentialism or of like minded philosophies that produced the problem you are dealing with. An easy way to disprove me is to show that the idea is older than the early existentialists.

why are you stubborn in changing the literature of the philosophy and changing universal concepts? which are not wrong or immoral ! Just imagine what happens if every one thinks like you, for example everyone gives his/her own definition of the key terms, to the extent they are absolutely irrelevant or the opposite of each other, there would be no common language to communicate

No, not from the traditional teaching of the ontology of the mind. Looking at the School of Life's justification of the title, they're teaching a different interpretation of philosophy that is geared towards practical wisdom that is useful for all rather than theoretical knowledge that is interesting to some. They believe philosophy should be about helping people to live a better life which is a different but reasonable approach, hence the way this topic has been discussed.

I remember my favorite teacher in middle school was my 6th grade literature teacher. He was a skinny guy, & just goofy enough to keep us laughing. one day he heard someone say something mean to another student. Our teacher stopped everything and in the most serious tone told us a story about he himself , and how he was obese for many years. he explained the pain in great detail, the struggle of everyday. He than proceeded to say. " obviously I lost all the weight and I'm healthy now. but every morning when I look in the mirror I will always see a huge, fat person. Doesn't matter if I weigh 200lbs or 70lbs. I'll always see that fat kid looking back at me." I'll never forget that story .

We have taken the calculated decision to use this prestigious term of mind-body problem to focus on the issue which we feel is absolutely central to being human, and in its way a lot more interesting than Descartes's puzzles. We know from our work with students that issues of Cartesian metaphysics are properly irrelevant to most people who want to study wisdom, which is what we feel philosophy is and should be.

@The School of Life Ignoring the actual philosophy and trying to pretend that something you consider "more interesting" is the real philosophy is dishonest and arrogant. People watched this video because they wanted to learn about real mind-body problem, not an unrelated issue. That's why so many people in the comments are calling you out on this.

+uanime1 i also disagree with many points in this video. identity is not something that is arbitrarily chosen by an individual. it's an interplay between the individual and how they choose to portray themselves, and society's interpretation of them. you enter a realm of chaotic disorganization if you allow people to "identify" as anything, as deluded as they might be.

What's interesting is that for the first time in history we're about to enter an era where technology will allow us to customize what we look like (think cosmetic nanobots, effortless weight loss, skin/eye color choice, etc...) to an extremely high degree. This is already becoming true with designer babies and virtual reality. In fact, technology will start addressing some pretty fundamental physical and existential issues that have been around from the start. But, when I hear "mind body problem" I tend to think it should refer to something deeper like 'how does an invisible mortal self-conscious "spirit" animate this flesh-meat body?', not something as superficial as "people don't look like they want to".
@ytubeanon
@ytubeanon 7 жыл бұрын
heh your comment just reminded me of a great comic series I read called Transmetropolitan (1997) by Warren Ellis in which the "first issue is about an attempted secession by the Transient movement, people who use genetic body modification based on alien DNA to become a completely different species, who are forced to live in the Angels 8 slum district."

Even if/when designer babies become the norm, these kids will still grow up hating a part of themselves. People with straight hair want curly, people with curly hair want straight. Even designer babies will have to grow up, and learn to accept and love themselves for things they cannot change.

I got about 1 min into the vid and felt like what they were saying was wrong. Then with a quick google search confirmed that the mind body problem, in philosophy, refers to something very different.... I like school of life... but I would think that they would at least address this and say that they are dealing with totally different material than the original philosophical idea. I mean both ideas might be the mind body problem, but they should clarify at the very least. Also, not to be rude, but this is a much more basic idea than the more complicated one I found first search result on Google.

Less shit posts, more intelligent discussions
@dddmemaybe
@dddmemaybe 7 жыл бұрын
But as social creatures.. Intelligent discussions are just fought over who appears more intelligent, not what truly is valuable from such a discussion(unless the conflict is valuable, it can be to be honest). Because for the majority of people the goal is being the best among peers rather than being right or presenting something useful to others. If the normal peoples attempt to engage in intelligent discussions without any real training or high effort, it will only clutter, clog and confuse thoughtful debaters. Here on youtube shitposts are alright, funny things and relatable things heal people and aren't bad in the large scope of things. This is a little bit off topic but I like to use this concept for talking about intelligence and why society seems to try and dumb people down. " For sentient creatures our danger and claws are our intelligence and motives, and to keep everyone together and safe as an optimal group, sometimes those people who accept being de-clawed are heavily beneficial to the function of everyone together. If our nature is to argue and fight, removing our capability to do so, or lower the stakes and scales of such arguments is a blessing of it's own. " If a person likes intelligent discussions, good for them because it's a commodity that can be traded for other goods and services. I like intelligent discussions, but I think it's something that tires normal fare of peoples.

That makes sense. But there are some big discrepancies. A key one is ageing. Someone might feel youthful but immediately gets seen as old because their body has indeed aged. It's very common for someone with grey hair and wrinkles to look in the mirror and feel: that can't be me.

I think this problem is complicated by the fact that we are naturally attracted by physical attributes, as well as someone's mind. While it's nice to pretend that the two can be distinct and separate, I think it's probably more accurate to say that mind and body influence each other in profound ways. How we feel affects how we perceive. Our thoughts also influence how we feel. So while it's true that "who we are" is not "what we look like", separating the two is not straightforward. There is a bi-directional influence going on, and that should not be ignored. But perhaps we can become more aware of the influences on our thinking, and perhaps become more rational. For example, we might decide to realise the (potential) weaknesses of physical attraction and look beyond it for something deeper. We might filter our first impressions of someone and instead look behind the actions to see what motivates them, and try to learn more about the "real person" inside them. Then there's the challenge of doing that without coming across as creepy haha. Ah human interaction is so complicated.

I love the School of Life videos. So much of their content has profoundly changed my life, and they do such a great service in the world. I find however that with topics like this--they fall a little short. They are so correct about the Mind-Body problem, but the scope of what types of struggles the present seem too narrow. Being mistaken for an accountant isn't the same as being mistaken for an assailant, mentally challenged, or weak. The problems they detect are quite subtle, which is their talent, but to miss the blaring more desperate examples, present a cleaner more sterile version of the world than is helpful. This is not to say the video isn't great, but could be more compelling.

Then i realized we don't know anything about each other except our appearance and what we heard from others. Then i realized that i realy regret my past, but she might still think that I am like the one i was 1 or 2 years ago: A hyperactive loud child. Thank you, I'm struggling with my identity right now and this really helped me, especially the part with "a person trapped in someone else". I'm a teenage girl, but I always felt that I should have been a boy, i always identified my mind and my inner person as a male one. I thaught about becoming transsexual, but I never felt like I would have been more confortable in a male body that wasn't mine from birth. This video made me think that maybe the things are the way they should be. Maybe I'm a male on the inside and I don't need to change my physical appearance for that.

This is independent to my hobbies or interests which people may see as either masculine or feminine. it's been 4 years since your comment. hmm, I wonder how you going with that struggle.

I look like a stoner according to basically everyone, which makes sense considering my Californian mannerisms and unkemptness. The negatives of being characterized as such don't bother me, most have to do with being unmotivated, absent-minded, a loser, and a ton of other things I don't mind, while the positives, being a pacifist, relaxed, nice, etc., help me so much with social interactions. Although their assumptions of me are most certainly false, I am lucky that their assumptions come with a ton of good baggage.

Reminds me of a television program I saw. The premise was to take a group of single men and women and have them meet in the dark. They would get to know each other by talking and sometimes touching to get an idea of who the person was. In the end they were shown each other without getting to see the other persons reaction . It was very interesting how some connected so well in the dark, but then got hung up on the look of the person. I forget the name of the show but some episodes were fascinating

I have a slightly different perspective of this 'problem.' I do bodybuilding, so the idea of 'outward sculpting' is exactly the goal. For me, lifting reflects a part of my inner self, that I enjoy challenging myself. The focus and physical exertion required is almost like a form of meditation to me. And I don't feel 'misrepresented;' I feel like as I see progress my physical appearance better reflects my inner self.

There's a problem with this video, although it does explore the mind body problem the only solution that arises is to just accept it as a fact of life. The mind body problem is actually just a state of mind and any state of mind can be changed. You see, others put label on us from the similarities of other people's personality to their body type and not vice versa. Sure we may initially be generalized in the body category but if we allow our personalities to shine through enough they no longer associate us to a similar body type but rather associate our personality to this body type. In the end, just be who you want to be and let your personality shine through c:

+ Hardcore Blues men and women have similar feelings of insecurity, however the reality its undeniably different for the two genders, generally speaking. in other words, the number of girls who feel like they are unattractive is probably proportionately similar to that of men that feel the same way, but when those same girls actually try to go out and find a mate( or just get laid) they will find it is quite easy. for men, not so much. so for all of the good intentions of the fist person who responded, its really not that "comforting" or much of a consolation. she may have things that are "wrong" with her, but at the end of the day, will have a much easier time finding someone than me( a guy). i ( or someone in a similar position) would much rather have heard from a guy with similar problems saying "i still found someone to love me". anyway that is just one way to look at it. not trying to be a dick. the gesture was appreciated Erika.

Thoughtful much, as always. It prompted me to think about something I have always felt about myself; that my life, at best, is simply one I have had a privilege to witness up close. You ever felt like that? This epiphany stems from an empirical understanding of self: How I seem to have a side to which I'm drawn and a trajectory, seemingly thematic, to which I am predisposed. I guess what I mean to say is that my body carries its own thinking with it and that this gets in the way of a lot of things.

Part of the problem is that a shy person tends to be more humble and hidden. They might not think they are attractive. There are probably many shy attractive people that do not believe they are attractive even when they are told so by others, from my experience.

I agree. Surely there are many people who are both shy and attractive, but they won't come out and say so because they don't see themselves as attractive. School of Life, this was an amazing video. So apt for those that struggle or are unable to showcase who they are internally. I know you focus on the emotional intelligence aspect of these inherently philosophical issues - but I believe this episode could have been followed up with by an episode/case study on modern technology's ability to create idealized versions of us: either through social media manipulation, the use of digital avatars as an ideal personification, or the way platforms like snapchat are introducing augmented reality technologies, and how this will affect perceptions of ourselves in the future.
