I like this three legged dog! No disrespect to Michael (because his voice is amazing) but the rhythm laid down by Bill and Mike; combined with Peter's distinctive riffs are what made REM. IMHO

Wow, wow, wow. Amazing to see Mr Berry at the drums again. It's strange because people would call this an 'almost' reunion or 'part 'reunion or whatever because, Mr Berry, Mills and Buck are playing together but without Mr Stipe. However, if it were Stipe, Mills and Buck or Stipe, Berry and Buck or Stipe, Berry and Mills they'd be shouting that it is a full reunion. As long as Stipe isn't in there it's not a proper reforming apparantly. Which is silly because R.E.M. have always been a band of equals which is something I have always loved about them.

Bill Berry brings zest! I love how Peter Buck is taking the whole experience in. Him admiring Bill while Bill is in the zone! Also Mike Mills was the secret weapon in R.E.M.

Didn't even know Bill ever came back even for a minute! Right on - always REM - in any version. Mike Mills once took me to a Braves game cuz I was friends w his girlfriend, Brooke at the time - we partied - he came to see my awful band play in Athens - good times. He's a super nice guy. Also produced my friends album which went nowhere - Mike Mills is a super nice, super talented guy. I love me some Mike Mills - we were smoking cigarettes on my balcony at 3am the last time I saw him. He gave me some great advice. What he told me could change your life. He said to me...

I once saw R.E.M. play a show in DeKalb, IL where Gary Zeckley, the author of "Superman" showed up and sang it with the band. I got to hang out with him afterwards, he seemed a bit of a lost soul, but a really sweet guy.
@Oh_I_Will7 жыл бұрын
is he the singer as well....his pronunciation "I am Soup er Man
@sydneyzekley-p4v8 ай бұрын
@hellsdonuthouse Gary Zekley is/was my father as he is long passed away now (28 years). I appreciate your message and I soulfully receive the intuitive observation you made of my father.
@HellsDonutHouse8 ай бұрын
@@sydneyzekley-p4vI’m so pleased to connect with you! This was in the 80s when REM’s version of the song was at the peak of its popularity. After the show my friends and I went to a diner to eat, and your dad was there at a booth being interviewed by a journalist. He told us all about it, and kept saying how he was “in space” over it. He described how he was at the gym and someone told him they heard “Superman” on the radio, which he knew nothing about. Soon afterwards he heard REM’s cover, and shorty after that the band flew him out to sing with them. It seemed like an almost overwhelming thing for him to take in, he was still reeling over it. He told us long stories about his successes and failures in the music industry, about how baroque and complicated his arrangements were getting, how he was putting traffic noises and sound effects on records - “things that had no business being there.” He seemed very hopeful that he would write a new song with the band, which struck me as sweetly naive. All in all it was a singular pleasure to meet him, he seemed like a lovely kind soul.

Surely its Buck and Stipe who had a major freezing of relations. You never see them in latter period interviews together, or anywhere near each other for that matter.
@jamesburton80703 жыл бұрын
It feels like Buck and Stipe got a divorce. An amicable divorce, but still a divorce. I don't think there is any beef between the two of them, but I get the sense that Buck and Stipe don't want to work together any more. The recording of "Collapse Into Now" was apparently more contentious than the band made public, with Jackknife Lee "referring" between the band members. I think Berry did a lot of that role when he was still in the band, which is why the band kind of drifted after he left.
@chuckschillingvideos Жыл бұрын
I think the band had run its course, regardless of any interpersonal issues among the members. They had a good run and it ended.
