I believe that he is in incredible form. You can see from his analysis of the world championship. Also the rest of the male players, except Hiraku, are making major mistakes. I am of the theory that they are relying too much on the computer. For whatever reason Fabiano's performance is even better than I expected.

Fabiano played with Nodirbek like cat with a mouse. He showed superior strategic understanding, beginning with ...c5, and white didn't know what to do. Fabiano looked rather melancholic (not to say depressed) when commenting the WC match, allowing the German GM to mock him, he was probably thinking "I should've been there", but it seems he decided to be next challenger.

It's really good to see good players doing well again -- the super GM core of players like Fabi, Hikaru, Nepo, Alireza, even Shak and Rapport, and of course Ding, all feel like they are legitimate contenders for the next World Championship if Magnus does not return. I think Levon, MVL and Duda are also right there. And once Gukesh and Pragg mature a bit more they will be mainstays for a decade as well. Chess is looking great these days!

8:56 qf6 looks better threatening the bishop and a6 pawn. Once the bishop moves like c8 trying to defend the pawn then qc6 again attacking bishop and the pawn. Once we get rid of the bishop from the diagnol, ng5 fork is possible....

I think this is confirmation that Classical chess is the hardest one because it drains far more energy from your brain compared to other modes of competition. That's why World Championship is the most prestigious tournament in the World of Chess.

Fabi could have carried on with the tournament not losing a game, but at least he lost to another favorite of mine - Shakh. Fabi is in great shape. I think he’s playing much better compared to what he did in 2014.
