It should be noted the Lion was at least the 2nd most powerful pysker amongst his Brothers. Since as far as we know only the Lion, we have no mention if Magnus ever did, saw the EoM true form. The Lion had the ability to wipe away the mask on the EoM and see his true human form. During the Great Crusade the Lion had a conversion with Guillemin before meeting with the EoM and the rest of his brothers in War room in the Imperial Palace. As always Guillemin got under the Lions skin and so the Lion needed to clear his mind/claim his nerves. So the Lion used a technique he learned on Caliban forests to push out all real or psychic distractions and focus on one thing only. When the Lion entered the room with his father and his brothers, when the Lion look at his brothers he was struck by human male in their mist. There with his back to the Lion was a baseline human man of mild age, medium height, medium build, with medium brown skin and rough shoulder length medium black hair. The Lion was struck by how average and boring looking this man was. Then his brothers looked up to the Lion and the simple man turned to face the Lion. This all happened in blink of an eye and when the Lion blinked and the simple man turned completely around. There instead of the baseline human was the EoM and his brother staring at him. The EoM looked at the Lion almost cheerfully as if he realized what the Lion saw.

I think that the aspect of the Emperor as the wounded Forest King is the aspect of the Emperor still on the Throne itself, protecting the last of itself while waiting for that cast off part it removed to come to this forest to become whole. Which means a reunion of Russ with the Star Child, being led into the forest by El Johnson would have to happen to reunify the soul, and then Cypher must slay the body of the Emperor on the Throne with the Lionsword for the newly reformed Emperor's Soul to reinhabit.

The Star Child was the aspect of the Emperor’s soul which held compassion and love for the world around him. The Old King that Johnson encounters in the Calibanite woods seemingly cares nothing for the Primarch and is barely even aware of his presence. I think the Old King is a warp manifestation of the Emperor on the Golden Throne. Unable to communicate, unable to focus completely on anything, and constantly surrounded by the Ruinous Powers.

Forest walking being a human webway makes so much sense. Also the human webway being key to the emperors goals it also makes sense that the first primarch being built around using it also makes sense. Id be willing to bet Jaghatai probably also has some sort of similar power since primarchs tend to have backup archetypes.

Here me out. Since Lion is the Arthur of the 40k, What if the Soul Shard was meant to be brought to the Emperor in the boat (Lady of the Lake), Since he is lost at sea and needs the Child Star so he may be reforged Like Excalibur then the emperor can find his way back. Since the emperor had imprisoned Drach'nyen in a Custodes then it became a sword, what if the Emperors Soul Shard was put into the Lion's Sword for safe keeping. Cast out to the Lion while he destroying the traitors worlds (Aka Arthur Questing with the Excalibur) and it being powerful weapon against Chaos. Like Arthur who broke his Excalibur fighting his friend. Maybe once the sword was broken fighting Luther the Soul shard Was freed (lost) and now Cypher (Lancelot) is carrying the broken sword knowing he has to guard it and bring it to the Emperor trying to finish the Lions quest of Star Child and either does or does not know it is missing. And like lady of the Lake In Arthur story if he has the sword with the Child star with in it, he can toss it back and the Emperor can be renewed or reforged like the Sword. So if the Soul Shard could be reunited with the Sword and Brought to the Forest of Caliban then Lion could approach the boat and return the Shard. For the Sword could be the key to keep the dark away aka the Child Stars Light.

I think the old King The Lion meets has to be the part of the Emperor that remains locked to the Golden Throne. He can't really communicate directly with the Lion or focus on him for long just like with Guilliman in the throne room. At one point early in the book it mentions that the old King is slowly dripping blood into the water which could be referencing the fact that the Golden Throne is failing which further confirms for me it's that portion of the Emperor. I think the benevolent part of the Emperor in the warp is the one we saw in the Dark Imperium trilogy and there he looks like he did during the great crusade when he shattered the cauldron of Nurgle.

Perhaps the Forest of Caliban is a construct enabled by the Emperor after he's been stewing for 10k years. A prototype of construct adapting the concept of the Webway to each Primarch after setting on the Throne. He'd have to re-consider how he could possibly enable some type of safe travel amongst the stars. The Lion is also bringing warriors alongside him when he responds to the different times and warzones. The Forest is the perception of the Lion's for the "new webway project". Perhaps Russ would percieve it like a Frozen Planet like Fenris. This could be what scares the Chaos Gods the most; The Emperor has -learned- during his time in the chair and has set-up his own "Nurgle's Garden"

Once the web way became infested with Daemons, maybe he realized it was lost but was able to adapt the technology to humanities needs. I like your interpretation

The emperor was known to have left his most trusted technologies to the 1st, seems plausable hed leave whatever salvagable remnants of his webway project to The Lion to use, endowing him with his now 'forest walk' ability. I believe that the emperor in the forest that is in the novel is the current emperor on The Golden throne projecting. Once the starchild is found and reunited with this aspect he may be healed.

While i DO think that the old man is the Emperor, i think its the way he currently looks to the Lion. Each primarch sees what they want/need to see from their father. I do not think that its the star child tho, i feel like that part doesnt quite fit. I find myself wondering if the Star Child is with Valdor and Russ in the city of dust while they gather the forces to make an assault on the warp. Im almost positive that that is how 40k will "end", with a huge push through the warp to deal with the chaos gods directly. But, just like everything else with the Emperor and his plans, it makes perfect sense and it also makes no sense. Perfectly not confusing at all.

I am going to bring up my boy Magnus, and even Tzeentch, who both were shattered into shards and lost pieces of themselves and their power. It seems fitting that the Emperor would have suffered, or done the same thing, even to himself, to do what needed to be done, and THERE COULD BE MORE THAN ONE SHARD. I picture the human part of Magnus, who is a grey knight now I believe, and the human part of the Emperor, the star child, meeting and sharing their regrets at what their power has done separate from them. All hero's, or villains, seem to have to put their humanity away to do what needs be done at some point or another.

I don't think the emperor did severe part of his soul when he fought Horus. If he did then Abnet made a gigantic error* in writing the most critical piece of the whole story and... I don't think he would have done that and I don't think the editors and the other authors no doubt doing proof readings wouldn't have spotted it. Spoilers for End and The Death Vol 3. On page 191 "things burst and vanish in an instant annihilated so completely it is as though they were never there: mercy, restraint, respect, compassion, love." - so you know all the characteristics you'd think make up the star child. On page 338 "I wait for you and I forgive you" - sounds a lot like love, compassion and mercy to me. *Or we're in a Fury of Magnus situation were there are two different and irreconcilable versions of events, or something else happened.

I dont think this is likely. The Emperor had prescience. He could see many roads, but not the turns that led there. But.. he would have seen Caliban being sundered and reformed later into wormwood and being tainted. Plus... Caliban was warp tainted from the start. I do not think the Emperor would have chosen any place even a reflection of a place that is tainted. IF it is a reflection of Caliban and the warp reflects emotion it is a place built of fear, terror etc.. Also the Emperor did not chose Caliban for a legion. Chaos did when they sent The Lion there. All he did was trust The lion who vouched for the people of Caliban. He was wrong to do so since a portion of them were tainted. They also produce some of the most loyal badass marines no doubt. But they are inherently tainted just be being of Caliban. I think its the warp. Why not? Even the chaos gods are of the warp but do not control it/ They can shape it... channel it...use it as power etc... but they do not control it inand of itself. There is no reason it could not float the imperium unseen by the gods. Its not like the gods of the warp can see the whole warp or sense the whole warp. Also... from day 1.... he was empowered. Before the Horus heresy even kicked off in full... Keeler had the ball rolling on his worship. I think in a moment of near godhood... he looked into the warp... and saw that his soul would be at risk... but that the risk was worth it. It was literally do or die...for both him and all of mankind. Ps... Think back on precisely the phrasing Malchador used... He said the piece of his soul hovered... reflecting against the background radiation of the sol system.... before fading away. He literally cast it off right into space... not even into the warp. It wasnt even his choice for it to enter the warp. He had literally just made the decision to cast off Godhood. I think it makes a kind of interesting juxtaposition... he doesnt want to be a god... but in his desperation he reaches for the power... the dark power of the warp. The same power Horus had.. and he could have taken it all and become the dark king. But in that final moment with the help of friends he made the sacrifice to not only shed the dark power... And went even further and sacrificed his love... his soul... his hope for mankind... and even his flesh... And that did it. IN attempting to toss away godhood in an ultimate sacrifice... he proves he is worthy of it. And his soul coalesces in the warp achieving apotheosis through no choice of his... but as a direct reflection of how we the people feel about him having made the sacrifice. And this is why THEY fear him... A true god...a righteous god.... Full of love and the hope for mankind... With the power to face them in the warp in their own house and curb stomp them all the while turning the people from Chaos with his mere presence instantly nerfing chaos across the board and where ever he shows up even more.... Its the perfect circle.

I think you’re conflating two different story lines. The Emperor appearing to the Lion in a vision is the actual proper Emperor on the throne and the Starchild is something different. Recent novels have indicated the Starchild will be reborn as an actual child which doesn’t match the vision.
