i am totally on board with the idea that the hat and the handbag represent their identities! would that work with other characters? like, does Moomin's lack of accessories represent that he hasn't found himself? did snufkin lose part of his identity when he gave away his hat with the dragon? hmm 🤔

ooohh I rly dig this Moomintroll idea! In the first Snufkin video I made I talk about how in a dream sequence he lost his harmonica, which meant losing a part of himself; but I like the idea of his hat too! (except he gets it back somehow... I suppose the universe doesn't want him to be hatless!)

Saying "don't dwell on the past" helps no one. If someone is sad and you care about them, do you just tell them "you shouldn't be sad" and leave? No. This just reminds me of people telling someone with depression "Not to be sad because there is nothing to be sad about." or that "they'll get over it". I feel so sad for Moomin mama, she is constantly taking care of everyone around her and they kind of take her for granted. Whenever SHE has a problem, she has to deal with it on her own. :(

Fun fact, the end of the book is a little more cynical and nihilistic, when all the characters have gone badly wrong, the family finds alcohol and starts drinking, which would imply that, all the members of the Moomin family became alcoholics at the end of the book. The only character in the book who will finally survive all the trials and tribulations is The Groke. In the book, Moomin Trolls makes Groke warm and as a result, Groke is happy because she no longer spreads the cold everywhere. I also liked the TV series version more of Little My’s story arc as she tries to unravel the mystery of the lighthouse. Funny in itself that, in the 90s anime, the Lighthouse story was executed in a more "happy go Lucky" adventure style. While in the book and the newer TV series, the story is more of a fantasy-spiced melodrama.

The lighthouse arc in season two hit so close to home for me it actually triggered both me and my mums trauma. It was supposed to be our favourite lighthearted escapist show. We loved the show. Now we’re put off from watching much more of it by season two. Moomin Papa was disturbing and borderline abusive with how he acted with disregarded his family and lashed out. He’s never been a worse person.

The Lighthouse Arc is one of my favourites in the show so far. Not only is the Lighthouse Keeper an absolute delight whenever he's on screen (especially with Little My) but seeing the different sides of the characters was really fascinating. I mean, the look of genuine fear in Little My's eyes was something very new and refreshing. She thought that crazy fisherman was going to kill her!

When I was watching the lighthouse episodes I felt SO bad for MoominMama. I had gone through a simular situation and would dwell on the past just has she done. It made me remember those times and how lonely and sad I was. The amount of times I cried watching those episodes is too much!😂😭

Yay! Another great video! The Lighthouse Arc is so good. Seriously, in this version they feel more real, sometimes Moominpappa and his problems hit home. For example, I remember the first time I watched the episode Moominpappa & Son I wanted to cry because it remind me of those years when I was a child my father worked all day I only would see him maybe two hours a day: working outside of home and when he was working at home he was at his computer with other important tasks. And now with the Lighthouse Arc it felt real again. You know they love each other, but these situations can get the worst of people and the writers protrayed it so well with these episodes. They were dramatic, but not overly dramatic. Honestly, I loved the relaxing feeling of Season 1 but damn, Season 2 snapped sometimes in a really good way. PS.: Moominmama is such a strong character, I hope when they adapt the Memoirs we also see her point of view. They hint her adventures when she was younger in Season 2 and in the book we only know she was lost at the sea. Seriously, she can build a house in just a few minutes, she's awesome, what kind of life she had before the Valley? I know Tove Jansson didn't really gave her a backstory (that I know of, I only read until Midwinter and the first volume of the comics) so it would be cool if Gutsy just invented something for her. (Also yes, I was thinking of the movie The Lighthouse at the first episode of the Arc xD Even made the joke on social media because it was too much)

The episode with Moominmamma's trouble honestly is what made me stop watching. The happy ending just felt so... unearned. Moominmamma is putting aside what she wants purely for her husband's sake, and he doesn't really acknowledge that or thank her or apologize for it. She has to do all the growing and Moominpappa gets everything he wants. It really frustrated me and I couldn't get past it.

O, I remember how i got this book: it was our first familly foreign trip and we went to Finland, where we visited Muumimaailma, near Turku. That is a Moomi themed park and it was great, but me and my brother wanted to know more about Mumintrolls and our parents bought us a book (in Russian, it was really thick) and that is how I first new about Tove Jansson and her stories. Love them very much)

Okay hear me out the fisherman can be a good friend of snufkin’s dad because the fishermen and snufkin have so much alike but they probably never met because the fishermen went on a fishing trip befor snufkin was born and when he went the boat got caught in a storm and got washed up on the island and he found the lighthouse and decided to live there :)

This was the video that introduced me to the story of the Moomins back when I was making fake macarons for a project for school near mid-2021. I joined the fandom around the start of my 3rd term in the school year 2021-2022, and I think that among all the things I got into within the school year, this is my favourite.

This story arc really hit me close to home with how I see my parents, whenever they're in a subtle conflict with the people each of them are deep down outside of the life they made together, like my dad is easygoing and can get careless but unlike my mom who is a perfectionist and can be burdened by things as an artist type, he can really pick apart problems by sheer logic and work ethic as a buisnessman. But when he is naive or shortsighted my mom can hold him back from any possible dangers. Its fascinating how Tove Jansson based them off her own mother and father's quirks and strengths. Even if they are much different than mine there is that shared love and admiration for them in how she wrote them and Moomintroll I can feel through her writing of them that later adaptations have respected and grew from.

Was not expecting the jumpscare that is 0:07 but it at least got me prepped for the essay :) As a piece of critical commentary, though I live for your Moomin-vids, they tend to run longer than needed. I wholly respect the time and effort that goes into every publication, but it seems that you re-state established points beyond what is needed. We as viewers accept the points that you make, so there's no reason to keep saying the same thing again and again. Your editing skills coupled with your writing are enough evidence for us, as viewers, to grasp your point. There's not need to reiterate the same argument over again once you've already successfully made your point. Maybe I'm too KZbin about this, but back up your points in the comments section instead of the video. We all love you so there's no need to repeat points when the majority agrees with your analysis. ​@@DrawpinionDump Tbh, as someone who is a newcomer to the Moomins, and was introduced to Moominvalley 2019 through your videos, I really like all the evidence that is given to support your points throughout your videos. Unlike fans who know all about the Moomins' stories already, or have already watched the 2019 series, I have no context for a lot of the characters or occurring story. Because of this, the evidence has helped me to understand what is going on and see why there is such character depth, or growth, happening in the show. As for restating points, I can't speak for everyone but I know, for myself, it makes the conclusions hit home a lot harder: the point is stated earlier on, and then after all the evidence is presented and the point is restated again, I have an "Aha! Now I understand and see why that is!" moment. Anyway, that is just my two cents on the matter. I'm now interested in watching Moominvalley 2019, and I'm excited to go into it knowing that there is so much character depth and development in the show. Thanks for making these videos!

I love this arc, but I've always hated dismissive Moominpapa was of Moominmama's feelings. She's discouraged from having a garden, she's not allowed to have her things (rosebush), and her mural is intentionally ignored by him. I understand that this was about adapting to a new environment and change, but why does she have to give up her all her interests for him? I wouldn't have been so bothered if she was allowed to have her hobbies

There doesn't seem to be any easy access to this series from the U.S., maybe I'm just not resourceful enough to find it and get it through a VPN or something. This is not such a bad way to sample some of it. Although, I would like it even more if Drawpinion would reference writers and the script and depend a little less on hypothetical "psychoanalysis" of characters who are, after all, totally fictional. This is intellectually at the level of young adult or above, I don't think we need to be immersed in the fictional story and forget there are artists and authors behind the scenes (even if its not Tove herself). Without this, it starts to seem like an unhealthy obsession, instead of derivative but very enjoyable entertainment.
