Honestly? Wow. Your analysis of Moominvalley is absolutely phenomenal. I adore how you go into both Moomintroll and Snufkin's character arcs with an intense amount of details. Some of the things that I passed off were some of the most key things to BOTH of them (Snufkin losing Teety-Woo and it replacing him with Moomintroll, Moomintroll losing the dragon and it replacing him with Snufkin). I'm honestly massively relieved that you didn't try to incorporate any "Snufmin" stuff into the analysis; I'm actually even more impressed on how you took the song "Love Me with All of Your Heart" and DIDN'T go for the "Yup, this is a date and they're gay" explanation route. As much as I ship it, it's really nice to see a more "character development" perspective on it. I'm ecstatic to see what Gutsy Animation will do with Snufkin and Moomintroll's characters, and I'm glad I could really learn about who they were before getting the chance to watch Season 2 (because it's not been released yet). I feel like Moomin is doing the best he can. You can't help emotions sometimes. The fact that he's so respectful of Snufkin's nature and doesn't try to coerce/guilt/pressure him into staying is a clear sign of some maturity even if he isn't fully there yet. At the same time I relate to Snufkin, who loves his freedom but also experiences the positive and negative sides of it. He's free to do whatever he wants, yet completely isolated from others. He's beholden to no one, yet separated from any help. In the same way Moomin has to learn to cope properly with his emotions, Snufkin has to come to terms with the fact that there is nothing wrong with relying on other people and loving them. True and healthy love isn't a chain or a cage.

My need to be on my own has also really made me feel so alienated sometimes. Characters like Snufkin definitely shows me that it’s okay to feel this way as long as I don’t truly shut everyone out (not that I have done that) but I definitely do get uncomfortable when people get too clingy (even family and close friends) to the point that I maybe moved over seas. Anyways, I’ve spent the past ten years grappling with accepting this side of me and Snufkin sort of helped me see that it’s okay to want to be alone and have lots of time to yourself.

I can’t shake off the odd feeling of Snufkin’s dream scene. I have a thought that aside of having a fear of being forgotten or replaced, I think his nightmare manifested because of the guilt that he had done to two people that he somehow ‘hurt’. And the reason why Moomintroll hugged Titty-Woo was because of the relation that Snufkin thinks that he hurt them by pushing both away without noticing the effect of his actions. Saying “It’s best for us to be together and forget about the person he hurted us”. That’s probably the reason why Snufkin looks a bit...weary when he returned based on his body language. He tries to open up more to Moomintroll, but he couldn’t help but to leave when he already feels uncomfortable. It’s like a scene from the RWBY show, where one character ‘ran away’ because she thinks she hurt her friend but her friend is more hurt when the character ran away. The friend was very VERY angry about that and almost lashed out. But then again, the friend does have some abandonment issues. Also, I almost choked myself from eating my breakfast when I saw the many parallelisms of Snufkin and Moomintroll. Like I didn’t even notice that, and it shocked me as I was shocked when you created this video days ago and didn’t see it (because KZbin is being a jerk).

@@DrawpinionDump true, but theyre also written biased to her own perspective... watching a show, is it all the world according to The Hero? do the other characters' perspectives matter? like, is sniff his own person with a deep concern for his and his dangerously reckless friends wellbeing after being practically orphaned in a merciless wilderness ((having no idea where his family is or if theyre even alive)), an affinity for interesting objects and their sentimental value ((reference: his comments in exploits of moominpappa when he asked about his long lost parents' collections)) and real value possibly exascerbated by the insecurity of being lost and alone ((and then emotionally disregarded by his only friends)) in a world written when peoples very lives were still buyable and denyable... or is he just some greedy, cowardly, stupid little joke only kept around to make The Hero look more Heroic? does the artist's own intention during creation matter exclusively, or do the characters themselves get to live and grow in the hearts of their beholders? i think about this all the time, in fiction and non-fiction. afterall, what is "real," and cant "unreal" things have "real" impact?

Amazing analysis. I especially loved your observation that Snufkin's return to Moominvalley requires him to give up some of his identity. It succinctly explains that push/pull tension he has with Moomintroll's obvious affection for him. On one hand, Snufkin genuinely misses Moomintroll and wants to see him. On the other hand, those feelings get tangled up with Snufkin's fear of getting caged in, and his need to protect himself from other people's expectations. Also, you highlighted some really insightful parallels between the dragon and Teety-Woo. Snufkin's tendency to isolate himself and withhold affection from others is bound to hurt him sooner or later, unless he changes direction. Next season's adaptation of "Moominvalley in November" has the potential to be a real tear-jerker. (Can you imagine 2019 Snufkin returning to an empty Moominhouse? Oof...) Anyway, fantastic job. These videos are so insightful and I just wanted to say thank you, because it truly made me see these characters. For this ship, it's not just about 'Snufkin loves Moomin' or 'Moomin Loves Snufkin' but instead, that the two of them find themselves in each other. They learn things about themselves that they most likely would never, if they hadn't met. It seems a lot like a message in this is learning who you are and learning how to love yourself, before being able to give your heart to others. Snufkin needs a bit of help in learning that he won't be forgotten, where Moomin needs to know that he will return, and that Moomin Valley is a home for his friend.

I just assumed I was drawn in by his charm(which I am), but thanks to this amazing analysis(that deserves much more attention) I realized I have very much in common with him, something I have never realized before. In the 90s cartoon, I already knew I liked him because he always left, and was a bit of a loner without really minding it, much like myself. Not that I leave, but I often wish I could. Snufkin is a character that I've always related to in a way, even when I was younger and watched the Polish interpretation of the Moomins a lot. I loved the books, and I especially loved Snufkin. In a way, he felt like a non-existent older brother or friend who always had the right things to say, but felt a bit lost underneath it all. This analysis reminded me of all of those times I used to watch the Moomins and how they have helped me. It's silly to say, but the Moomins is one of, if not my favourite, series of all time because of the depth of the characters and the lessons they all teach. Thank you.

I don't want to be that person, but I prefer the 90s series so far. The way the episodes and characters flow naturally. Where as moominvally i feel a like the episodes and characters are more separate... It's like "this is a snufkin episode" "this is a moomin episode" "this is a little my episode" But in the 90s you get to each character react to the situation in their own way, even if they opt to not be involved, you get to see that. Also, moomin keeps forgetting about snufkin in this series. Like, there's a ghost! Moomin is going to want to show snufkin. He's gonna wonna rock up to his tent at 5am and tell him all about it. Or when snufkin goes south for winter in the moominmama handmaid episode... dude waited all winter for snufkin to come back, and didn't react to his friend leaving.... normally when snufkin leaves it's all moomin talks about. But the seasons and their significance for moomin and snufkin are lost a bit I think in moomin vally. In autmne moomin tries to spend as much time with snufkin as possible. But nope. He's just forgotten. :/ I also like in the 90s you visibly see how snufkin keeps himself distant from others. He sits on the sofa away from the table, or even outside with his head through the window! He is in no way a mysterious character with no episodes about him, because the point of the moomins series was to have the characters grow together, not in their own episodes. Snufkin starts off just leaving without saying good bye to moomin. Later he says he'll leave when moomin is asleep so it's like he never leave. And at the end he gives moomin his harmonica. And even goes as far to spend the night with ... ok this sounds really sketchy but. He spends the night in moomins bed with him... it took a whole but snufkin grows as a character. There's even the mamaluk episode where snufkin really really wants to go fishing... And moomin doesn't join him XD like, they as far in development that moomin feels ok about rejecting the invitation to spend time with snufkin. And snufkin is fine with this. They have grown to learn to compromise to make eachother happy and not loose themselves in the process... And it happens all very naturally. Very slowly. With no in your face episodes pointing out the fact that it's happening... But i do like how new snufkin has all those annoyed faces and noises.. XD Funny how his name is snuf kin and he doesn't smoke that pipe any more so the snuf part of his name makes no sense now.

compared to the 90s i blame the budget due to the animation then just being 2d its more loose and more episodes be able to produce and flesh out the characters wherein the new adaptation you can easily notice the lack of cash they have, there arent a lot of characters introduced as fast as the 90s one thus time to interact with the others arent really an option plus well 13 episodes per season and 20 minutes to show the whole year is kinda hard--- so yeah yip yip!

You know Snufkin's dilemma between returning to friends and giving up a part of himself or being free hits close to home. I'm on autistic spectrum and almost every human interaction requires from me overlooking some part of me, controlling how I present and generally focusing more on neurotical style of communication. Most of my hobbies or things I like blossoms when I'm alone and only after I've finished I'm willing to show what I've worked on. It hasn't been scientifically proven yet but there are many people on spectrum who claim that the more time they spend with others the weaker their "special abilities" get. I'm not suggesting that Snufkin has similar experience just that the dilemma can be even more nuanced. BTW I really like your videos on Moominvalley they remind me of my literature class in high school ( yup being autistic doesn't mean I can't do interpretation )

Thank you for your video it's really good. I felt very word you said. Sorry I'm Chinese so my English isn't good. The relationship between Snufkin and moomintroll is really similar to me and my girlfriend. Back when I was in middle school, I was quite popular at school. But actual I'm an introvert and having fun with everyone really tires me out. So every now and then I need to get some alone time. My girlfriend, let's call her Leaf. Which I only knew her name at the time. She would always try to talk to me when I'm trying to relax. I was literally annoyed by her. As we became closer, I tried in every way to push her away. Whenever I look back on that time I felt really sorry for how mean and rude I was to her. And I still think it's a miracle she never gave upon me. I never understand why she loved me so much. Sure I always seemed really confident but in fact I have low self esteem especially at home. Whenever I voice my own thoughts my mother would never listen and she would start to refute me for hours on ends. So I learned to not say anything. My mother takes good care of me, but she constantly regards me as ungrateful and coldhearted, so I basically hated myself when I was a child. When I watched Nini's episode I cried a lot. Thankful I went to study abroad and lived with a family very much like the moomins. I was struggling with depression back then so obviously not functioning very well. They still treated me like a member of the family. They literally saved my life. Back to Leaf, I realized that I actually liked her after some distance is put between us. But I was really afraid to tell her because I have been pushing her away all this time and now I'm possibly forever gone who am I to say that I liked her. So I just began by giving hints but she actually answers to it. So I asked her to be my girlfriend. She was so happy but I think it's a bless that she likes me. Leaf taught me so much about trust, thanks to her I was able to trust her and other people and less afraid to show my imperfections.

I think that Snufkin has antisocial personality disorder, I myself don’t have it bu a friend of mine does and he’s fairly similar to Snufkin. Look at the look Snufkin gives TittyWoo, it’s pure fear. He seems to have an actual fear of commitment and being controlled. He gets anxiety and has too leave, he DOES want to be around MoominTroll and loves his friends but he’s scared to. This can go back to him not having a real family/ Dad. He’s not used to being loved or cared for, he only knows how to be free. I actually can relate to this, I’m aromatic and asexual being in a intimate relationship terrifies me as I’m used to taking care of others but having anyone take care of me.

First of all, amazing job on that video. Some months ago I found the hole Moomin world again, after many years not having it in mind. We had an old book back at home then I was little with all the stories and simple illustrations, and my mother used to tell me and my siblings a few stories from it. After randomly finding a picture of Snufkin on the internet and researching a little, I immediately fall in love with both look and character design. Back in the days I wasn't even a big fan of the hole "Moomin-thing" but it somehow felt related and after watching the 90´s show and read some stories I can say Im a huge fan of almost all of it. Snufkin somehow became my online alter ego and I love quote him and send gifs off him in the right situations. alright, first of all, I love your videos, especially the moominvalley ones which have just made everything so much clearer and they're so relaxing and just... ah, I love it. I would like to talk about this one line from episode 2 that nobody seems to be talking about and I don't know why? I'll try to keep it short. It's the "you can't be truly free if you admire somebody too much" one and I've ranted this essay alone to myself countless times. to take in the first part of this quote “--you can’t be truly free--” many of his life philosophies and general behaviors become clearer. above all else, this character values his freedom most of all and when without it, he can become extremely closed off and uncomfortable. in the second part: “if you admire someone too much,” he is trying to tell titti-woo that attaching yourself to a person or place or relying on them too heavily will take away your freedom, and in snufkin’s eyes that is the worst possible thing that could happen. he is trying to tell titto-woo to avoid this fate at all costs, and make sure to remain your own person. he thinks that you should not find yourself attached to someone too closely because that happening will make you lose your freedom and therefore, to him, the most important part of yourself. in telling this quote to the little creature, snufkin is trying to pass on his own wisdom, much like a parent would do to a child, while he doesn't account for titti-woo’s different needs. he is trying to tell him “this is how you should live your life, as I do, free and unattached” because he doesn’t know any other way. thinking about it this way it makes it sound like he's just passing on this knowledge without a thought. he knows this lesson, he's learned it, he lives by it. but then those MAD LADS at gutsy decide to add on from the original line to make it "you can't be truly free if you admire someone too much one, BELIEVE ME I KNOW" which implies that he himself has not completely heeded the lesson that makes so much sense for him to follow, based on his entire character. but he just can't bring himself to follow it because he know that the person he admires is WORTH that loss of freedom, at least for a little while. anyway, I think about this line every single day and now I'll make you too :)

"Private Life" by Oingo Boingo perfectly depicts Snufkin's beliefs. Private Life is about a man who is happy with their life inside a bubble, no-one but himself. However, he's tired of how boring it is without anyone, wishing and waiting for something to happen to take him out of the cycle he put himself in. But when people take him out of his comfort zone, he goes back to his private life.

I just had so many great ideas while watching this video. Snufkin tells Teetywoo that he can never be his true self if he admires somebody to much. I feel like Moomin needs to learn this lesson, too, in order to grow as a character. He had his own adventures without Snufkin in the end of season 2. While Snufkin also got a treatment of his own medicine when Moomin sails off to the lighthouse island with his family without letting Snufkin know by leaving him a note. Maybe this will make Snufkin realize how much he is hurting Moomin by leaving every winter, and maybe it will make him realize how much he misses and loves Moomin, too. I can't wait for season 3, it's unbearable.

I'm pretty sure Snufkin knew that bailing on Moomintroll at the party was a dick move at the time. From what is shown, he's way more upset about it than Moomin, to the point that it's what he thinks about while he's locking himself in the cell, not about his actions getting MT and SM thrown in jail. I think Snufkin's issues stem not from refusing to let himself be loved, but in feeling super fucking uncomfortable with the love he gets. Moomin knows and genuinely understands why Snufkin will always leave in the winter, but understanding does not stop pain. Snufkin is likewise aware that his leaving hurts Moomintroll and feels guilty about it. His standoffishness is part of his nature and also partly at attempt to push Moomin away because that's what thinks Snufkin is best for Moomin, suggested by what he said to Teety-woo about admiring someone too much. There's guilt there for just not being a person who can't hurt Moomin on some level, regardless of how much Moomin gets it. You're exactly right about Teety-woo and the dragon being parallels for Snufkin and Moomin and their paranoia about the other. Teety-woo gets resolved in a satisfactory way, with TW shedding his simpering admiration for Snufkin and having better things to do than follow Snufkin around. Snufkin is totally okay with this (at least in Moominvalley; I haven't read the story in forever and can't quite remember how it ends, but I think it's similar). I think this is how he hopes his relationship with Moomin will evolve, with Moomin growing up and not idolizing Snufkin so much and ideally not being so hurt when Snufkin leaves. Contrast with the resolution of the dragon issue, in which Snufkin just gets rid of it, not just because it's annoying him, but also I think because he's pissed at it for hurting Moomin's feelings.

My friend sent me this video and said that this is a video about me and i was like what the heck. and then he said that Snufkin is exactly how i am, how i am not materalistic, how i am always wanting to have the freedom to NOT have to do something, and more importantly how i stop talking to him for months on end just to come back like nothing changed. so i watched the video.. and Snufkin is literally a cartoon character exactly like me, wich is scary as hell. there are other things that resonate with me when it comes to snufkin but... yeah... Great video btw! :)

Moomintroll's a great friend but let's face it, he's a total pushover. He tries too hard to please Snufkin, bless him. And it's sad because Snufkin can be a total jerk at times, just like all of us.

ok i totally adore this video- me myself am still young and struggling with problems that i can just too much relate to these of moomin and snufkin... so let's just hope their development will help mine as well nevertheless, it is quite interesting how the creature could represent the part of moomin that snufkin struggles with so much as the dragon represents the same just for the opposite character. i just love how the music goes with the show and the characters- i haven't watched the 2019 adaptation yet but when i heard free spirit i knew it would correspond to snufkin and the message of ready now is clearly understandable as well as it can be interpreted into both ninny and snufkin quite well just from different perspectives. growing too close to people is scary, especially if you know you are going to leave and you will end up longing and hurting if you do get too attached- i am thrilled to watch this adaptation in the future and also watch more of your videos (and the ones coming because boi i know exactly that you will make more) because at least i can relate to both snufkin and moomin in quite unique way that not many can understand at least not from whom i've met. may the moomins become more and more popular again and hopefully get much more love, attention and of course shows in the future because nothing gave me such a beautiful mind change as these quirky characters~

As someone who has fallen into the moomin rabbit hole I have come to realize how much i relate to Snufkin. I've always been independent, doing things my own way and I love being alone with my own thoughts. But with this I often push people away. It took me years to discuss my true thoughts and feelings to my best friends and we were friends for over 8 years and I only started feeling comfortable for the last 2 years of our friendship. I would be rude and distant to anyone trying to be kind or show interest in me. And for most of my life I completely shut down the idea of love. I honestly believed I would never find love and I would be fine with it. But the truth is I did feel love, it just wasn't what society deemed acceptable. It all changed when I fell in love with a friend of mine named Lily. She is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen and the best person to be around. And now that I look back on it, I've always loved her it just wasn't romantic. I always felt comfort in her when I didn't in anyone else. I've grown since then but I still have a hard time with emotions and expressing my feelings. So yeah moral of the story: Snufkin is literally me

I just found these two videos today and I'm in love- I LOVE to analyse stuff when it's something that I really like. I adore to ramble about the series and books and T H I S explained EXACTLY why Moominvalley is one of my favorite adaptations of the Moomins and why do I feel about this series the way that I do- Like literally some of the things you said were exactly what I was thinking when I finished the first season, mostly in this video. I don't know but I really appreciate knowing that someone thinks the same tbh. 😔👊✨ Keep on with the good work-

I was wondering why I attached so hard to Snufkin, other than being a fellow introvert that needs to nope out when I'm peopled out. Right now, I'm actually going through a similar journey to what you describe as Snufkin's arch in seasons 1 & 2. I'm realizing I need to reassess what grounds me and let go of what is holding me back. Of course, big changes to how your life operates are super scary, so the way he acts and reacts are very understandable. Thank you so much for making these Moomin videos. ^_^

These are very sweet analysis videos. I'm very new to the Moomin series, just discovered it a year ago (cause of a friend who grew up on it was talking about this new series) but never really stopped to watch it til like a month ago? maybe? if that even, and yeah, it resonates very strongly with me. It's a genuine story about learning to grow into yourself, learning to trust others, respect other's needs and desires while fulfilling ur own, AND THE COTTAGECORE AESTHETIC OMGEEEEE 2020 must have had a field day with this show lol
